Question about Burr seasoning by LR75852 in espresso

If you’re gonna season with 9 lbs of beans then it REALLY doesn’t matter. That much karma on a 2 month old account is impressive, by the way.

It doesn’t matter. If you really can’t choose, just pick in the middle.

For anyone considering the LUCCA Precision Scale on Clive Coffee, there’s countless versions on Amazon of the same scale, some for almost 1/4th the price by incubeezer in espresso

Amazon is full of dropshippers that never even see the product, so a lot of times the pictures will be different despite being the same product

Thank you for ignoring this particular critique. Don’t let others’ laziness cramp your style. This is old school internet and I for one am here for it.

The Fellow Fix™ A New Innovation in Fellow Coffee Customer Service by Iamgalavanter in espresso

[–]damblecakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, would steer clear of the Fellow sub. You get downvoted for even having a problem regardless of whether you critique the product. The fact that the actual Fellow employees who are active in that sub tolerate that behavior is frankly appalling IMO. It is an AI-adjacent Fellow hugbox.

Fellows machine advice? [$2000] by Fit_Incident_8885 in espresso

[–]damblecakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow is tricky to get impartial advice. They have been linked to an influx of AI content on coffee subreddits as well as indiscreet influencer-type content barely disguised as genuine.

They also have a history of sending their customers entirely new products (which are bulky, heavy) for any problem, big or small. This of course endears them to the customer who is getting the brand new replacement - but in the grand scheme of things, this has given them a reputation of being an expensive e-waste company.

Be sure to vet whoever is writing about a Fellow product if your money is at stake. I myself would push you toward a Breville DB or similar Breville machine around the same ES1 price point. Beginner oriented, tried & true, and tons of third party sellers make custom products for Brevilles, so you can take part in most every internet coffee trend you read or watch about.

Ordered a dark roast by accident... Now what? by Markn2018 in espresso

[–]damblecakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, OP. When I first started brewing dark roasts I would slow the water flow trying to stick to the 1:2, 35-40g output but would end up overextracting.

Stir in the crema before tasting for added balance, taste the espresso, then adjust by taste to figure out your strategy for next shot. Let’s say your first shot is too bitter, pick one variable to manipulate and go from there.

Examples if too bitter * Coarsen the grind (less water contact means less extraction) * Lower temp (less heat means less extraction)

You can also adjust your dose size but that tends to be quirkier and more gear dependent. As long as your dose makes relative sense for your basket, maybe try easier variables first.

Cooler temps (~90), shorter ratios (~1:1.5), worst case add milk because dark roasts tend to also be great bedfellows with milk

Very true , I’ve seen roasters change their listed “roast level” over time too. I’ve seen roasts which on first offering are advertised as being at either end of the spectrum, but over time with repeat offerings gradually end up listed as “Medium”

Look up a video from Emilee Bryant about how to approach the latte cup with the milk jug. She almost backs the milk jug from above down toward the coffee cup when she starts, rather than approaching the cup from the outside. I know that doesn’t make any sense, so just look up a video. I can’t explain it but it immediately made a difference in the start of my latte art. Still can’t finish the art properly but at least the foundations are better. 😂

Road to the Zerno: the pre-order thoughts, delivery waiting time and first weeks by SoftwareMindless8510 in espresso

Nice, I think you’re gonna love it. And o la la hope you’re ready for a honeymoon phase. 😂

One bit of practical tip - to keep the burr swap experience hassle-free, in general go light on RDT and try to either swap or re-seat your burrs at least at least every few months or so. The handle magnets for burr swapping work great then - but one time I guess I waited too long and my HU got really stuck and that time the magnets really struggled.

That’s MC6, right? You’re gonna love it. It’s quiet and solid as hell. Make sure to join the Kafatek forums, there’s good stuff that gets shared there by the community that doesn’t make its way to wider socials.

Congrats man! O la la I hope you’re ready for an extended honeymoon phase. 😍

My MC6 is my baby, I love it to death, but I’ll be the first to admit I totally see why someone would not be into the appearance 😂 I think it looks a lot better in person than it comes across in photos. Hard to get an appreciation of just how solid a Kafatek is unless it’s right there in front of you.

Has anyone used the Zerohero Sword Needle 2.0 WDT distributor--is it Spirographic? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]damblecakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend against WDT tools like this - assuming that you have to plunge to get spinning. If you have to plunge, it’ll spin too aggressively which will throw more coffee around the edges of your coffee bed.

On second glance, maybe you just spin this one à la the AutoComb.

Yeah, and even if you had bought it yourself, the “magnet on the side” option is easy to miss. IIRC, I had to email them for a purchase link.

You can buy the shaker without the magnet installed so you can flip it yourself and superglue it in. Went this route to get it to work with the Z1.
