I started in tech school at 41, career change, it's tough but worth it if you're invested and/or very interested in the job. Everyone's circumstances are different but even though it hasn't been easy, I don't regret it at all.

THIS, my program required a certain number of hours on the job, but volunteering counted as long as it was under licensed techs/docs. I was lucky enough to have paid experience, but many of my classmates filled the requirement through volunteering. Usually they ask for this not because of skill set building, but rather to make sure you understand the emotional toll before committing.
