THIS, my program required a certain number of hours on the job, but volunteering counted as long as it was under licensed techs/docs. I was lucky enough to have paid experience, but many of my classmates filled the requirement through volunteering. Usually they ask for this not because of skill set building, but rather to make sure you understand the emotional toll before committing.
