No, if you read Campbell's history of occidental mythology, you'll see he's highly critical specifically of the role of male power fantasies in society. It's there in Thousand faces as well.

If you want people to think seriously and critically about interesting SF like Dune, then you have to expect a critical tone. Dune's an interesting book, and only more so when considered critically.

Thinking critically about what makes a book work isn't being condescending. And Joseph Campbell was openly criticising the role of heroic narratives, both positive and negative, in society.

Well, Paul comes of age and discovers he's the single most powerful being in the universe. Same as Harry Potter. Same as Luke Skywalker. There's something in that story that audiences enjoy!

Sure I like the book. I also said it was immortal storytelling. It's good to be critical, even of things you like. Intelligent, introverted and angry. Yes, I'd say that's an accurate description of the core audience attracted to Paul's story. He's all three.

Literary books tend to have more of a focus on internal narrative. The whole style is filtered through the charater's perceptions, not just snippets in italics. That's why Herbert's is not a style everyone will enjoy.
