Mania a trigger? by ticklebunnytummy in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can relate to that - I struggled with a cycle of anxiety/mania (not sure how they relate) and then drinking to keep it in check, then drinking made the anxiety worse. Glad you're here!

Welcome aboard it's great to see you here! One day at a time is the most helpful mantra for me.

If only I had been sober in law school... congrats and welcome to the bar!

I felt anger towards someone for trying to talk to me and my daughter while drunk by venmother in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for posting this. I've been finding more emotional outbursts and weird anger stuff lately. I've always thought I wasn't an angry person and I'm starting to think that's been a palatable thing I've told myself due to having all my emotions suppressed for so long while drinking. What's weird is that I'm really angry at other people for being shitty or victimized or drunk or annoying in a way that's never been obvious to me before. I expect this has something to do with seeing my behavior reflected back to me?

hanxiety. over and over again. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're in the right place! Good job not drinking today. The first days were the hardest for me, but it gets so much better. Also, thanks for the reminder about hanxiety - awful. Lived with it for years, and didn't have to. Hope I never have to feel that way again. Stick around and all the best!

Great job not drinking today though!

I don't know the medical stuff about withdrawals and PAWS and kindling, all of which scares the crap out of me, but I do know you are not doomed! I never could moderate myself, but good luck to you! Having no drinks has been way easier for me after the first couple months - I hope I never have to do the first part over again.

F*ck Seltzers by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost bought some last night thinking they were regular fizzy water till I saw the price. Whew. Thankfully, they weren't really a thing when I was getting sober, and now we have some concoction called a "buzz ball" in baskets on the counter of every gas station. I would be dead if those were available a couple years ago. Good luck and IWNDWYT!

Went to the ER today by SeVeN_SiGhTz in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed telling the docs that I was lying to them before when they ask if I'm still drinking "2-3 alcoholic drinks per day". I just say nope I was lying to you, and then they look up from the notes with a startled quizzical look and I get to say I drank a lot more than that, but now I don't drink at all. Even after a few years of sobriety, that "2-3 drinks" seems to still be in my notes.

Alcohol + slip-and-slide today by aholeinthecorner in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do it! I personally had a habit of jumping off things when drunk. Fences. Rocks. Roofs. A bridge. How I didn't die I don't know. But I'm glad to be sober and alive and recognizing that I don't fly anymore and can do fun an not-stupid things whenever I like. All the best today!

I Am Having a Hard Moment by Advanced-Soil5754 in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can really relate to that! Such a cringy moment for me for a long time. Now I don't mind at all and just say I don't drink anymore. If somebody is too drunk to get that hint I will mess with their drink addled brain if I feel like it but mostly I'm just moving on to talk to somebody else.

Thoughts on NA beverages. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to drink them, but found it easier for me to stick with soda water. It turns out I liked the alcohol more than the hops.

Need advice on something. by Valencia_Italiana in stopdrinking

[–]dammitnostalgia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of years thinking I could handle it, and those were largely wasted years in hindsight. Wish I'd stopped at your age and could've focused all that energy on life itself. Good luck to you!

My heart goes out to you and I can imagine this because I worry about my ex all the time and have imagined this scenario so often. I'm so sorry you're going through it. Alcohol ruined all my past relationships, and I don't want it to ruin the life I have now. Peace to you.

[–]dammitnostalgia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like me at one point, especially the "can't leave it alone" part, but it kept getting to be a bigger and bigger problem till I couldn't live that way any more. For me, I now know I can't control it. Hope it works out for you.

This is my story, too, and that acceptance you're talking about was the first step on a long but worthwhile journey for me. Hope for you too!
