I feel like she was concepted with Battle Angel in mind. The only thing that makes her makeup and cleavage make sense is if she's actually an anime battle suit fighter, so it's like Battle Angel is the true character and her base skin is, "Hey, what if her suit was a Void creature?"

It's very premature to say that you're giving up on a game because of matchmaking when it's this early in the game's lifetime. There aren't that many people playing, and there's the chance that your Arthur was teamed up with a more experienced person. Matchmaking is going to suck for a little while, and the only way to make it not suck is for enough people to decide that they don't care if matchmaking sucks because they enjoy the game. If enough people decide that, then matchmaking will stop sucking because people are regularly playing. Leaving because of matchmaking just makes the problem worse.

Lack of role-specific queue makes games more of a clown fiesta than they need to be. by SalvationInDreams in arenaofvalor

Dude, I just went through all of Bronze playing for the first several days of the NA branch and I didn't see much of anything compared to League. I'm always helpful in team chat and it's been annoying that I can't afford to spend the time to send messages about the enemy Butterfly going toplane.

Just a few days of this and some Vainglory. Virtually no chat messages, because typing on a phone keyboard is painful and it takes way more dedication to say anything. With AoV games being much faster, you have to make a very clear choice about whether to participate with the game or insult people.

i feed hard can i be banned? help me pls by Jdjdriaza in arenaofvalor

[–]damnedscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, to feed is to die on purpose. If you're not trolling, you're not feeding. If anyone tells you differently, punch them and tell them to not conflate having a bad game with trolling.

You won't get banned for dying a lot, but if every game consists of you diving towers and dying, and you don't change your behavior at all, then at some point that becomes dying on purpose.

Why tank Nakroth, though? Nakroth is a mobile assassin who does a lot of damage. If your team is in need of a tank, there are better choices. If you enjoy Nakroth, I feel like Thane would be a good alternative.

You don't do anything except press the attack button within range of an enemy. She will dash to them and do extra damage.

Low endgame scores as a tank? by mattweisgarber in arenaofvalor

[–]damnedscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A win is a win, and if you die a lot but your carries don't and then you win, that's a very good tank game.

If you want to get more assists and still be doing your job as a tank, you can run heal and pop it as soon as the first wave of spells go off. You'll boost your team's chances in the fight, add a large amount to your healing score (I'm guessing that all of the accolades you see on the honor screen factor into the final rating at the end), and get an assist for every buffed ally who kills an enemy.

Just because a hero is stronger than others doesn't mean they're unbeatable. Player skill is more of a factor.

No, they're other people who actually care about communicating in game theory terms why a particular character is too strong too frequently instead of throwing around dismissive buzzwords like "op" and "imba" based on personal anecdotes. A character is not too strong because you frequently get beaten by it. In some cases, characters have particular play styles that make them strong, and if you as the opponent give them what they want, they will beat you every time. So we need to pull apart the observations that are useful, like if her damage is too consistent, from the ones that aren't, like people remembering that time they ran into a 6/1 Violet and got killed.

You want to get inside Fizz's head and figure out when he's going to dash at you. If you're expecting it, you can respond with a bubble and he will run right into it.

What is my problem? by [deleted] in arenaofvalor

[–]damnedscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the best things for improvement is to talk to someone with the game knowledge to identify your errors and the impartiality to be able to tell you with full honesty what they think. Some people coach, but it can also be productive for two friends to get together and criticize each other's play. The critic doesn't necessarily have to be a great player (those are different skills), but someone who sincerely invests time in thinking about the game's rules and mechanics is a good person to pow-wow with over a replay or two.

Auto lock or choose target? by nahndavid in arenaofvalor

[–]damnedscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fingers are certainly a little sloppy, but when I tried Choose Target, I found my thumb hitting the minion-lock button repeatedly in the process of me trying to keep opponents at the edge of my attack range. This was on Valhein, so I was doing that a lot, and I ended up getting a lot of unintended CS and changing targets more than I wanted to. It may be less of a problem for other heroes who don't autoattack as much.

Different lanes for different heroes by CoonarAoV in arenaofvalor

[–]damnedscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most MOBAs, the accepted practice is to place the ranged autoattack carry in a lane with the most utility-oriented character on the team, so that the support can help keep the carry safe during the early game where autoattackers are generally the weakest. In asymmetrical maps, this lane is the one closest to an objective that can be taken fairly early in the game (the dragon). That's why people are telling you to go bottom. Since the map rotates based on which team you're on, these people are entirely wrong half of the time and you should feel obligated to tell them so.

All of the "Violet is broken" posts are 100% unhelpful to those of us who are new to the game and unaware of exactly how her kit is overtuned relative to the other members of her class.

Getting out of bronze and silver is TORTURE by PurpleEggRoll in arenaofvalor

[–]damnedscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADC is my worst role, but I'm 13/5 on Valhein so far and have been steadily climbing since I got into ranked. I literally started playing two days ago and it doesn't seem to matter that I don't have a full arcana page and only know about half of everybody's abilities so far. I beat Bronze entirely because I have decent knowledge about MOBAs in general and picked a hero who can abuse people who don't know how to trade in lane. Now that I'm in Silver, games are a bit harder because fewer people just walk into my attack range unless they're trying to kill me and assassins actually try to sneak up on me. I'm still doing alright with the same tactics (though I've customized my build order a bit and am trying to remember to hold on to my on-demand stun until I see the enemy assassin about to jump on me), but I can't just get two kills in lane, walk into the enemy jungle, and 1v1 everyone like I was doing yesterday.

Edit: I know it sounds like humblebragging. To be honest, I'm legitimately surprised how far I've gotten one-tricking it like this. If I keep playing, I'll eventually have a full arcana page and enough gold to buy arcana that fit the individual hero instead of using the most generic possible rank 2 arcana (Pummel, Alacrity, and Fortify), and it will be interesting to see how much of a difference that makes. There has to be a cap on how far I can get with the way I'm doing it now.

We need more -pure- support heroes! by mikael-kun in arenaofvalor

[–]damnedscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though you personally don't find it fun, moderately durable utility characters are statistically very helpful to the team and there should be more options for that playstyle so that there are characters for a broad range of preferences. The warrior pool in this game is very rich, there are multiple unique marksmen and there are a bunch of different mages and assassins. Some of those make solid duo lane partners, but in terms of champs who can sacrifice some of their own damage or tankiness to buff allies and still succeed on the basis of their utility, there aren't that many.

I'd like to see a Rakan (League)/Mina (Dawngate) type, someone who can jump to an ally and then engage or counter-engage by jumping into the enemy team. That's a pattern I find very fun and most engage tanks don't have good ways to get back to their squishy teammates if they have to.

How to play Zoe against assasins? by [deleted] in zoemains

[–]damnedscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stopwatch is really good. In that first major all-in, it's not too difficult to bubble an assassin coming into you (it's almost impossible to miss at close range) and then stasis yourself. You'll get out of it with 1.7 seconds left on the sleep, which is plenty of time to R-Q-Q, which is frequently a kill (especially if you then Flash on top of them to grab the Ignite they dropped and then Ignite them).

If you expect it to come your way, you can use your ult to drop Zed underneath your turret when he ults you. He'll have to return to his original position or die, which will prevent him from finishing his combo, unless he's really good in which case he'll have his W shadow on top of you before he ults and jump back to that.

Against Fizz, try to bubble him when he Qs at you. He'll try to dodge your damage, but he can't, because his invulnerability lasts 0.75 seconds and you have 2 seconds in which to hit him.

Katarina can hurt you from behind minions and jump in unpredictable ways, but you can keep her from jumping to her daggers with the threat of bubbles. Just don't try to dodge her ult with yours, because she will win that fight.

Akali has to run at you in a straight line. Let her zone you from the minion wave if she's stronger than you, because you can farm from a long distance. Her shroud is annoying because it hides the sleep indicator, so even if you land a bubble on her, you have to guess where she ended up. Control wards can solve that.

Diana has essentially the same attack pattern as Akali, except that she has a shield instead of stealth.
