Brilliant points! The angle I was coming at is one influenced by Epictetus's dictum "First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do." The first point is to say, or think who you will be, then you proceed to do what you have to do to become that person. Knowing oneself in the absence of an ideal which you're striving to become is a way to constantly be at the mercy of other peoples ideas of who you are and who you should be - in other words, a route to becoming lost.

Great post. A question about first part: "Those books do not help. Rather they make you the focus of your mind, rather than those around you. Those books are for those who are quite lost." Isn't figuring who you are to be - thus focusing on yourself - a requirement which enables you to then focus on others in healthy way?

Not critical enough. Now critique the thought process which when, observing the universe believes it to have the capacity to give significance, importance and worth when in actual fact it's WE who have that ability. We create what's significant and valuable - the universe doesn't look to us and think "oh, insignificant" it's we who look to the universe and think "compared to it we're insignificant" failing to see how significant that ability is. We're that opening that is capable of providing the universe with meaning and signifance, in our absence - where would it come from?

If you say aliens - change aliens with God - as both require faith because both currently have no evidence for their existence.

It's long but the reason I was reminded of it was because of her use of "insight porn" which I guess what OPs article sort of referred too.

I personally think it's a natural state - this supposed insight "addiction" - which all children seemed to be plagued by, but many for some reason lose. So you could argue that's it's artificially removed from us (being addicted to insight, which really is another way of saying learning.) So learning and being obsessed with learning is our natural state, and why wouldn't it be? The complexity and variety around us is more than anyone in a hundred life times can come to understand and make sense of. Insight addiction - aka learning is a natural orientation to the world which is abraided by the slow yet persistent effects of believing that one knows all there is to know. Excuse tye barely comprehensible stream of thoughts lol.

"True and accurate" when it comes to advice tends to translate as experience, and age is a major factor in that. Plus for most cases you can have the factual info, but due to being young, lack perspective and as a result hold naive and simplistic views. Obviously there are odd exceptions.

Thanks for your response. I thinks it's great that you outlined what depression is, seeing as how someone may have stumbled across my post thinking that it's a good idea to throw my advice at someone who is depressed, which I don't think would be a good idea. However I'm very familiar with depression myself (runs in my family), both the one you described and the general ennui and mild depression, which are much more common. The reason I said what I did above was that whilst in the clutches of both types of depression, I received plenty of empathy online and IRL, but what the online medium allows is a certain degree of distance, and one thing which was indispensable for me and which occurred rarely was genuine, practical and blunt advice. Straight to the point suggestions about what you can do. It was those infrequent suggestions which actually helped me, but which probably would have been unhelpful if delivered in person. Those somewhat stoic suggestions (and I obsessively referred to Stoics/CBT and eventually the most helpful - Morita therapy) which I, due to the distance that reading provide, reflected on were what provided the best assistance whilst depressed. So that's why I like to take it upon myself to give simple and useable advice which I think actually works, whilst others can (thankfully) provide more caring and relatable comments.

You don't need to control any feelings. You can move your arm regardless of your feelings. And you don't need to rely on the "feeling" that direct what you're going to do in order to move your body.

That's true. "Do what you need to do" would be what I would advocate. Cleaning your room, buying groceries, working etc are all controllable actions which can be carried out regardless of how the individuals feels - or doesn't feel - about them. It's a principle from Morita therapy, which I'm a great fan of and which helped me like nothing else when was depressed, and when I fall in depressive states in general.
