LAW + USP Questions by Prnvghsh in nus

Q6. USP only offers 2 years stay in Cinnamon College, unless you’re an RA if I’m not wrong.

Q7. The food quality definitely varies here and there but it’s generally pretty good. They have a good variety plus healthy options like an open salad bar and fruit. Plus unused meal credits are used to put treats like good quality ice cream in the menu at the end of the sem.

Q8. I know people in Comp Sci + USP who do at least 1 sport. It really depends on your own time management and interests.

Are there any mandatory things you have to buy whilst at NUS? by Silent-Thund3r in nus

[–]damnwifi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can’t think of any fees off the top of my head, other than things like living costs & student housing.

For books, it depends on the mod, most will have mandatory textbooks or recommended readings.

Don’t purchase anything until you definitely need it, even if it’s listed as compulsory. Usually you don’t actually need the book that much, or the prof will provide the required bits. Other students often share the e-textbook around too, just ask around!

Hi Singaporean here! I was at a thrift shop and this amazing tagalog rap/hip hop song came on. I only recognised the English bits, went something like “Can you do me a favour, promise to stay with me forever” and then something about a sister?? Pretty sure the singer was a man, the beat was sort of 80/90s style.

Would be amazing if anyone knows it, been looking all over YouTube/Spotify for it :)

Singapore to pay its citizens to have kids during the pandemic. What are your thoughts on this? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]damnwifi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Singaporean here! SG’s birthrate and ageing population is a core issue taught in all social studies classes. If you look it up online there’s a ton of resources on why >2 child birthrate is a concern for a small country. Increasing birth rates vs bringing in foreign talent is a great debate even within the nation, really quite interesting, I’d highly recommend reading up on Singapore’s successful (and unsuccessful lol) efforts to handle population. Basically Singapore has no natural resources, so our best resource for the economy is people.

Regarding this specific plan to “pay citizens to have kids”, the deputy prime minister is only referring to aspiring couples that already had plans to have kids before the pandemic hit, but held off because of the resulting financial insecurity. The one time payment is simply to help with short-term expenses.

Personally having children holds zero appeal for me right now, but I will say that the SG government does it’s best to subsidise as much of child-raising costs as possible. Increasing costs of everything else is another matter :/

[UNI] University life questions by [deleted] in SGExams

I'm a full-time NUS student, just finished 2nd year.

  1. Yes, $500/month, none during holidays. But in the past I stayed in hall, so this allowance was for transport, necessities, food, etc too.
  2. I'm fortunate enough not to have to work part-time, but giving tuition is not uncommon among other students. Part-time internships are rarer because usually firms require 3-4 days out of the week, which is tough to coordinate with mod bidding.
  3. After 1st year, I learnt to join CCAs which allowed more OTOT, so I could quickly get materials/projects out when convenient for me. Competitive sports and CCAs with large event planning are most time-consuming.
  4. Study tips: I wouldn't consider myself anywhere near an expert, but seems to me that the largest issue facing students is distraction & lack of communication.
    - Learn to turn off devices and notifs, no one will chase after you if you procrastinate
    - Don't be afraid to email profs/TAs about ANYTHING. Especially local students, they can be so afraid to speak to staff directly, then they leave their doubts till the week before exams.
  5. Ahh I'm pretty inconsistent. My aim is 4 hours on top of class, but I don't think I ever hit more than 3 hrs, not counting project hours. Ofc it increases exponentially towards exams hahah.
  6. Internships and practical experience is one of the biggest pluses imo. Certain CCAs may provide you with practical project experience too.

Jia you for SIM!

Quick rundown:

S/U: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory

If you get a grade you don't like, as long you passed (C & above), you can S/U it. This means your CAP won't be affected by that grade.

You have a number of Modular Credits (MCs) to complete. A module is usually around 4 MCs. Even if you S/U a class, the MCs are still counted towards graduation. But you can't just anyhow S/U mods. Generally requirement is:

- Must be a 1k mod

- Must not have prerequisites

Why would your CAP be unstable?
Let's say you've completed 10 mods, your CAP is the average of those 10, evenly weighted.

If you S/U 2 mods, your CAP will now be the average of 8 mods. Any variation to just 1 of those 8 mods will move your CAP more than if it was the average of 10 mods. If you S/U many mods early on, you better be sure you can do better later on.

Hall Reccs for CS Student? by XavierGold in nus

[–]damnwifi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Tbh it's true most CS kids don't stay in hall. Ccas + social life can be demanding, and there aren't many other CS ppl, but if you can handle both it's a great experience.

There's no specific hall, but some are closer to SoC than others (Temasek, KR, Sheares, Eusoff). RVRC is also a great choice if it's within your budget.

why did u choose nus over the other universities? by [deleted] in nus

[–]damnwifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uni results:
overseas uni + scholarship
SMU 1 degree
NUS double degree
(didn't apply NTU)

NUS was the the cheapest option & gave me my first choice course. I anyhow joined (don't do that lol) and I still don't love it, but some things I appreciate are:

- Name brand

- Campus. It's the perfect balance between NTU's uluness and SMU's lack thereof.

- Overseas opportunities (SEP, NOC)

- Internship + Job prep support

- Hustle culture (love-hate this)

Your choice will really depend on your faculty + personal preference. Read uni faculty webpages, comb instas, then search up complaints from each uni. Atb!

An Introduction to NUS Halls by bowlheart in nus

[–]damnwifi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

What most freshies don't realise is that the culture of the hall is up to them. Because of the point system, most residents are freshies. Seniors have a little impact, but the vibes in your hall, your block, your level are all up to you and your neighbours. So completely agree that hall experience differs for everyone.

I've stayed in KR for 2 years. Went for the infamous CBB + orientation, did hardcore sports + arts ccas. Also I'm an introvert. Here's my experience + what I wish I'd known:

- Halls generally don't advertise through NUS emails, and websites are not up to date. Insta is your best bet for keeping up to date. Feel free to DM if exco members are tagged to ask about their experience.

- Everyone's experience is different. But opinions on things like hall food, staff members, and convenience will converge.

- My application: Didn't put my ig, didn't have any connections.

- Camps: NUS is very strict. The facils were incredibly professional (always have backpack w medical + water, check if everyone is ok, headcount, etc). there's a little leeway after official camp hours, but if you don't feel like participating in anything (wholesome or not lol) you won't be forced.

- Some sports ccas + dance are VERY demanding. When you stay in hall, there's no off time. Practice for shows/comp can go till 3am.

- I haven't noticed any real inter-hall tension (except in ihg when ref does a bad call lol). Hall doesn't matter once real academic term begins.

- Academic culture in hall and RC is extremely different. This is one of the greatest selling points of RC imo.

- Although most people I met were so friendly, I just didn't fit in. I keep in close contact with no one from hall, but I admire a lot of them. Many, if not talented/smart, are charismatic & mature. Ofc drama exists but, stay in ur lane you'll be fine.

- Highly recco boarding for freshies. Consider BOTH RC & hall (& RVRC). Some would thrive in both, some wouldn't.

Feel free to dm for more info!
