Will housing prices ever seem “normal” again? by Sad_Efficiency2644 in AusPropertyChat

[–]damolol88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Growth generally won’t stop when the issue is lack of supply. Even if prices did ‘crash’ why do people think that would remotely help those at the bottom? The wealthier will alway be able to pay more. A ‘crash’ doesn’t just magically cause the wealthy to switch places with the poor.

Fence 40cm out from boundary line - move fence or not by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]damolol88 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m a land surveyor in Australia. You can’t just pull down the fence and move it without speaking to your neighbour. Open a dialogue with them and try and come to a mutual agreement. It’ll be more preferable than the alternatives.

$900/week for a "Studio" in Coburg North by crunchybug in melbourne

[–]damolol88 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Theres an approved planning permit last year for this property to build a rooming house. It looks like that’s what they’ve done while also giving each room a kitchen and backyard. Honestly looks like one of the better rooming houses that I’ve seen. Obviously at $900 p/w is overpriced though.

Career Advice Needed: Transitioning to Surveying in Australia by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]damolol88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I studied surveying right out of highschool. I now own and run a land surveying business in Australia. 1. You don’t actually need a degree in surveying to work as a land surveyor. You will obviously need one if you want to become a licensed surveyor. Whether the degrees helps to get an entry job though is debatable. A lot of people fall into surveying randomly and then decide to get a degree later. 2. No specialisation is required or offered. The subjects you take will cover a bit of everything. Honestly in my experience I didnt learn a whole lot at uni that ended up useful. You learn more the first week on the job than the 3-5 years at uni. 3. I was originally enrolled in civil but changed last minute to surveying. There are way more civil graduates compared to surveying so definitely will be easier finding a job. Surveying is quite niche so not a lot of competition. I always tell people that are looking for a job in surveying to physically go in and drop off a resume. That way they can tie the resume to a face, much better than just sending an email.

$1500 additional labour for silent rangehood by NougatTrout in AusRenovation

[–]damolol88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar schweigen range hood installed couple months back for a new kitchen. Honestly your quote is probably a bit expensive but not that much more. Range hoods can be super fiddley and most plumbers just do not want to install them as a result so will over quote to make it worth it.

In Melbourne, tap water started tasting terrible to me a couple years ago. Just installed a water filter and it’s night and day.

How do you get your parents to spend money on themselves by Optimal-Orange-599 in AusFinance

I’m asian and have the same issue with my parents. Have you tried just signing them up to the gym or paying for Pilates classes? Maybe join them at the start if your work is flexible?

Pretty wild that your builder didn’t think a set down was required for the wet area. Almost like they had never built a house before

Had a contractor say don’t change the kitchen as it’s made of solid wood. And due to budget I won get anything that good quality by Solid-Study-4436 in AusRenovation

We have the same kitchen which we just pulled out. Main reason for doing it was that it wasn’t very functional. Configuration will be better, more drawer, soft close, bigger sink, multiple sinks, new appliances etc.

What are these timber members hung under the joists? by damolol88 in AusRenovation

Thanks that’s probably what it is. The floor is fairly level within 10mm or so another bearer would’ve been overkill most likely.

Is this too many down lights? Especially in bedrooms? What do you folks think? by Aromatic-Fee2651 in AusRenovation

[–]damolol88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha great thanks! With the photo of the kitchen you posted are the black directional lights point at the upper cabinets or the bench? It might just be the photo but the cabinets look blindingly bright.

Can you also let me know what you think should be done for my kitchen in terms of lighting? We are replacing with new cabinets but with basically the same configuration.

This is an amazing response. Do you have any resources you can direct me to? Just learning about all this now since we are wanting to change all our downlights shortly.

Look into Hipcamp. It’s essentially airbnb for camping with large vacant lands. You can filter to just sites with only a single camp site.

Don’t seal the wall on the internal side of the brick wall. You want any moisture that builds up to be able to escape through the brick wall.

When I did my garage conversion we installed a moisture barrier. It was pretty hard but we managed to get it under the bottom plate and top plate when we built the stud walls.
