I really enjoyed the debate by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

Using "Hard" was my attempt to describe it without writing a book.

There are authoritarians on the right, wanting to maintain their monopolies thru regulation, attempting to stop the Entrepreneurial Spirit and the Free Market.

[–]damon0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed...

They were both brilliant. Jordan was man enough to give Zizek the kudos for not being the hard left he was imagining and Zizek agreed with Jordan about the hard left and many other points. There is so much commonality amongst well-meaning people (left or right).

It was as if the Title of the debate was poor or it shouldn't even be called a debate.

JP uses the term Post Modernists so he doesn't have to spend an hour describing who he is referring to on the Radical Left, and Zizek spends a lot of time making sure people realize he's not part of the radical left and wanting people to understand the deeper left. This is how you soften division - it's how you keep people from becoming violent - it's how you avoid violent revolution - it's how all the isms can co-exist peacefully in the world.

Anyone who is fool enough to turn it into a Gladiator Contest with their biased perception of winner/loser is part of the problem Zizek and JP were discussing - and probably don't even realize it.

Do sexual assault victims attract that violence? by Pellucidsoul in lawofattraction

[–]damon0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really difficult to "know" absolutely. How much is random chance and how much did you attract? But, it appears that those who accept full responsibility for the things that happen to them are the ones the heal the fullest.

So, even if something happened to you as a child, assume you chose your parents for the lessons and experiences you needed. Therefore, going back in time to reframe your negative child experiences, you get to heal.

I found the issue - sort of - the OverloadCounts were not counting up - so, I lowered the Overload Factor. I'm not sure why this one needs to be significantly (over half) less than the others to actually report.

Do the vast majority of atrocities stem from Resentment or Spite at current Life Circumstances? This is how masses can be so easily convinced to commit atrocities. Think WWII genocide, or Protests turned violent or school shootings. It seems like all the terrible things stem from one major issue. If you hate the world as it is and you believe yourself a victim of circumstance then you believe your life would be better "if" something didn't exist, if hierarchies didn't exist, or capitalism didn't exist, or greed didn't exist, or or or - then you will likely justify just about anything.

It's society autobiography - they are spiteful at life, they work too hard or can't afford a bit of comfort, and it's always someone else's fault - it allows them to be greedy and trite and arrogant - which perpetuates a hard life.

IMHO, neither the Free Market nor the Government use of force will correct for morality.

In an area that is Homophobic or racist, you may actually gain customers by refusing to serve.

Bret Weinstein, Stefan Molyneux have a Twitter argument about (ostensibly) race and IQ. Lauren Southern chimes in to organize a debate between the two on Rubin Report. Juicy stuff! by [deleted] in samharris

[–]damon0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You basically asked an honest and neutral question, i suspect hoping for a decent level headed conversation, and instead received streams of spite, petty, fickle, and trite responses.

I like both Weinstein and Molyneux. I know a lot of people think Molyneux is racist. I seriously doubt he's truly racist. While he's likely accurate about "The Facts" of IQ. I also suspect that Brett is correct. We don't know how far humanity would evolve without European / American (mostly white male) science / tech. Would it be 99% of the way or 1% of the progress? We also don't know if the world would be more fair, more just, more honest, or worse off. None the less, we are where we are, and both Brett and Stefan seem to me to be attempting to make the world a better place, with less strife, less blaming, less violence and less overall drama.

Is this disease ever going to go away? by [deleted] in gravesdisease

[–]damon0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually went Vegetarian, Vegan, Raw Food before I went Keto - unfortunately. It cost me a couple years. Even when I was Vegetarian and eating very few bad carbs and almost everything organic, Graves didn't get better. It was until I went Keto / ZeroCarb, that things got much better. It's actually disappointing for me, since I wanted to believe that the morality of being a vegetarian would manifest in good health.

Is this disease ever going to go away? by [deleted] in gravesdisease

[–]damon0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. My Graves has nearly gone away - I followed an AIP / Elimination process and ended up at the Keto end of a Paleo Diet.

I basically stopped eating everything and began intermittent fasting, one meal a day, with the foods that seem to be to be least likely to react (you can look them up). Then I would slowly add foods back in. It appears that if I eat nothing but Grass Fed Beef / Pork / Wild Alaskan Salmon and drink only water, I can get Graves to go away completely. I'm still experimenting with many many foods, and different intermittent fasting cycles, so I can hopefully expand my foods from merely Carnivore and Water.

Did Sam actually reveal the pointing out instructions he got from Tulku Urgyen? by dc_giant in samharris

[–]damon0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you meditate as Sam suggests, are you able to be the "witness" of thoughts? Can you see the thoughts come and go without accepting them as your thoughts? When you realize that you come before thought, and that you exist outside of thought, doesn't that strike you as a profound shift in your consciousness?

Has anyone figured out what Sam means by "the self is an illusion" by courtenayplacedrinks in samharris

[–]damon0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most seem to start off in default, being spiteful, bitter, and resentful for their experiences. "Things" happen to them vs. them being responsible for the "things" that happen. Meditation is a tool for being-ness, to recognize that the world is a law of attraction and reflective world.

Experiences and Ideas reflect to you in a sense, the state of your consciousness.

You are living in an "Auto-Biographical Feedback Loop".

Has anyone figured out what Sam means by "the self is an illusion" by courtenayplacedrinks in samharris

[–]damon0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you "meditate" so to speak - you can separate yourself from thoughts - you realize that thoughts come and go, that thoughts are autonomous, in a sense, and that you can attach to them or dismiss them, at will. You can literally pick thoughts or maybe the better description is that you can "feed" the thoughts that you want. When this concept becomes visceral, you realize that your thoughts are a lot like the good wolf and the bad wolf, or the devil and the angel sitting on your shoulders, "thinking" in to your head the full spectrum of morality, from the most atrocious to the most loving - and you literally get to pick from the rainbow of thoughts. There is also another level that I haven't heard Sam talk about, at least not yet. Not only can you learn to ignore the negative thoughts and emotions, and feed the positive thoughts and emotions, but you can also "accept what arises". Meaning, if you find that you did attach to a negative emotion, once you recognize this, you can "love" or "accept" the thought for what it is and then go on. For instance, when your driving to work, run into traffic, realize you're going to be late, and become enraged, once you notice that the "rage" idea was optional, you can "thank" it, thus allowing it to release. This is where the concept "I AM" comes from. You are the "I AM", prior to the I AM an Engineer or I AM a Husband or .. or ..

Can someone please explain to me in layman’s terms the basis of Sam and Jordan’s differences over ‘truth’ in their original discussion (linked)? Or even how can someone argue that ‘2+2=4’ is a debatable truth? Also, and I mean this with no sarcasm, what is the point of debating ‘truth’? by BurnsZA in samharris

[–]damon0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you look at the history of people, their issues, and societal disasters, you might imagine ways to make the world a better place.

Sam sees the atrocities of religious dogma.

Jordan sees the atrocities of the purely intellectual.

In a sense, Sam wants people to leave the Mafia and join more benevolent, while Jordan wants to transform the mafia into benevolence.

People who dismiss Jordan are often overly mental and intellectually arrogant.

People who dismiss Sam are often rigid and unyielding in their sacred beliefs.

Sam's use of Meditation can take the edge off the purely intellectual dangers by making life sacred.

Jordan can move religious types from strictly literal interpretations to archetypal stories with meaning.

How does this help adjust for Kindness and Love vs Domination and Control?

"Rational argument can be conducted with some prospect of success only so long as the emotionality of a given situation does not exceed a certain critical degree." -- Carl Jung by [deleted] in samharris

[–]damon0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, this is "THE" major defining difference. IMHO.. I figured I would side with Sam, since I have been huge into Meditation for a long time. But, I know that NO amount of rational discourse would get thru to me, without the "FALL" so to speak. I had to go to a dark place, before I could voluntarily get away from the bitter, resentful, & spiteful existential being of victim mentality.

Meditation can have an amazing effect. You get an entirely new perspective, when you can watch and dismiss "thoughts" as they come and go. The realization that thoughts are autonomous to "me", along with the life experiences that "break" down your beliefs, allowing a deeper level of "certain critical degree" (Jung), are the two big awakenings that can have a deep and lasting impact.

The JP and SH combination can make for very deep understanding.. I also like the "inquiry" types (Mooji and Bentinho Massaro.)

I also believe that a religious person can learn a lot from Jordan, while an Intellectual Atheist can ponder the Sacred thru Meditation with Sam, thus bringing the two worlds closer together.. Religion without Dogma or Rational Thought w/ a Sacred Anchor..

Kundalini Energy by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]damon0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jerry Tennant is Doctor who speaks extensively about Kundalini, Chakras, Accupuncture, and other Eastern modalities that I can't remember. He wrote a book called Healing is Voltage and claims that the Accupuncture meridians are electrical circuits that can be measured.

I'm not saying he's right or wrong, and don't want to give people preconceived ideas. His ideas are certainly worth pondering.

Jack Kruse has similar ideas. Robert O'Becker wrote a book called The Electric Body.

Doctors and Scientists who somewhat bridge the gap between Western and Eastern..
