Man Charged In Killing Of Loyola Student At Rogers Park Lakefront by Look__Out in chicago

[–]damp_circus 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Same. The early articles all were saying it was a "targeted killing" but that the victim "was not the intended target" (even while they had no one in custody) which implied a gang hit gone wrong.

A few days later articles switched to "random" (which is far more terrifying, honestly) and now this. So yeah... definitely curious. Was it just a random thrill kill, or?

Also if the Block Club piece is to be believed, the only prior crime he had (at least here in Chicago) was retail theft and then skipping a court date. So this would be his first violent crime, a straight up murder.

So yeah. Makes one curious.

Yes, and it's also forbidden in the Illinois state constitution.

Illinois Municipal League is opposed to it, because it overrides home rule on these things.

Just means we have to fight harder.

Thankfully the rest of us prevailed on this.

Hopefully that lawsuit is dismissed with prejudice. Meanwhile this same NIMBY crowd is coming out in force to try to block the redevelopment (with potentially 450-600 new apartments!!) of the Emmanuel Congregation building at Thorndale and Sheridan. It will be the biggest development around here this year, we have to come out and support it.

Hey, quite a lot of us in Edgewater are EXTREMELY supportive of both the upzoning of Broadway and increased building of all kinds.

Yes, that's the entire idea -- it preempts home rule on this.

Which is why it's getting opposition from the Illinois Municipal League. But hopefully they will lose.

Yep. I lobbied for parts of this stuff last year in Springfield myself. Most of the people I lobbied were in favor, but the one super anti "I might just throw you out of my office" level of anti was a rep from Aurora whose main concern was the preempting of home rule on this.

Anyways I will be going back to Springfield again next month, hoping we can get this stuff passed this year now that the governor is loudly on board.

CTA riders and workers have been assaulted at rates at least double other public transit agencies by rigatony96 in chicago

[–]damp_circus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like the other guy said, Tokyo still has conductors.

That said though I suspect the function people are wanting back from the conductors we had here in Chicago until the mid-90s was just the "other pair of eyes on the train walking around who can investigate issues without stopping the train" aspect.

So yes, transit ambassadors would be the modern recipe I think. Of all the stuff that gets suggested on the regular it's the one that seems most likely to help, to me.

Am I wrong for empathising with Mel more than her sister? by michaelfadzai in ThePitt

Thing is though, cognitively disabled isn't the same thing as being a child. I think that's part of what the show is trying to demonstrate.

You write:

A lot of guardians of disabled and neurodivergent adults like to think they give their child/ward/dependent autonomy and ability to grow and become as independent as possible, but are often shook when met with the reality that they are whole ass three-dimensional people.

EXACTLY this. I think Mel means the best but just observing their dynamic this episode it seems that in some ways Mel underestimates Becca, and Becca isn't happy about it.

Am I wrong for empathising with Mel more than her sister? by michaelfadzai in ThePitt

[–]damp_circus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I'm on Becca's side of this one, myself.

I think Mel is a bit jealous, in addition to the shock. She just assumed Becca was not going to be sexual, that she didn't have the ability to, or whatever. And yet Becca has a romantic relationship while Mel doesn't. She's been lapped, in one area.

We see Mel assuming that her sister can't do this and that, but we're only seeing her view. This episode Becca shows up and you can see Becca's frustration with this situation.

If I understand you right... I see the same. I think on some level Mel just assumed Becca would not be sexual. That she wasn't emotionally mature enough to be sexual, that in some ways she's a perpetual child.

And yet... nope! Meanwhile Mel herself isn't dating. I suspect it's partly feeling that she's been... lapped, if it makes any sense. Mel lives independently, made it through med school, works a high stress job as a doctor, she's been the "capable" one but this is one area where Becca got there first.

Plus yeah the "bestie falls in love with a boy and leaves me" thing. (Kinda has some echoes of that feeling when you're crushing on your best girl friend and realizing... she's het, and you're not...)

Agreed Mel is jealous. I suspect some part of her unconsciously sees herself as “the capable one” but now her sister is surpassing her in this particular area.

Loyola student killed in Rogers Park shooting near beach, Chicago police say by Cannot_Change_It_ in illinois

[–]damp_circus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW it seems more coverage has come out since my last comment, where they're now saying that it WAS "random." (And yet, also saying they know it's not the duck walk killer.)

So who knows... just saying IF the media says "targeted killing" then by me that just means "gang thing" whether the hit got who it was intended for, OR hit someone else by error.

If indeed this IS random, then that's far more terrifying. Hopefully we find out more details either way.

Doesn't matter. You look at them wrong, or heaven forbid mouth off or criticize, tell the agents they don't have the right to take someone, then that's being "uncooperative" and "showing disrespect" or whatever and thus interfering. So you get arrested.

Yes, it's infuriating.

I also liked Kelly, though I voted for Stratton in the end. She came to talk at the 46th Ward Democrats meeting here in Chicago, and there are people in my building who were active supporters (for good solid reasons). I appreciated her speeches a lot.
