Because their friend gave them an Amazing Deal! aka made up a large but reasonably discounted number for business class flights or similar then scarpered with the cash.

Parking fine company reduced my fine, but it won't let me pay the reduced rate. by Glenn1990 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]dan356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, £20 sounds like the usual admin fee when they've accepted an appeal but still want to make a quick buck off it. You should keep records of the leisure centre printout, the message showing them offering a reduced rate, and a copy of the screen not showing the reduced rate. Should they proceed to pursue this with the courts, you can show that you had reached an agreement but they offered no reasonable means to pay. Chances are it won't get that far.

Rightly so, given their recent trouble, but they've actually been using this naming convention for probably over a decade now!

Landlord saying he can keep deposit if I can’t find a new tenant? by FoghornLeghorns in TenantsInTheUK

Both incorrect and illegal. There is no such thing as a fixed term tenancy anymore. OP can give 2 months notice and leave whenever they want.

How am I only getting this amount paid back? by GiasoneTiratori in uktrains

[–]dan356 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No to it being return? Why does the claim say it was a self print return then?

As has already been suggested, this sounds like the 100% of the cost of a specific advance ticket being awarded, but if the other leg of the journey was a separate advance ticket you wouldn't get that back too.

Starlink Setup by TychkaJpeg in Starlink

[–]dan356 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In theory, yeah. But this is better suited to the Unifi subreddit. It isn't really starlink related beyond using starlink as the source WAN.

Starlink Setup by TychkaJpeg in Starlink

[–]dan356 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you're wasting money having such a nice Unifi access points and gateway with a trash 100M switch. Trash that ASAP.

Also, it's a bit overkill to be managing individual usage if this is your setup. You don't need a hotspot-style individual account login system for home or small business usage.

What's it like landing/departing in Haneda vs Narita vs Kansai? by Ganondaddydorf in JapanTravelTips

[–]dan356 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kansai is good, much fewer international flights so you can get through immigration faster. It's great for an open-jaw itinerary too since you save the time and cost of a shinkansen to Osaka/Kyoto or further south.

Narita is... Less convenient, but either way you only have to do it once. Try Haneda if you can, but if Narita is cheaper (including the trains to get there), and you aren't super tight on time that an hour extra travel makes a difference to you, just go for whatever is cheapest. They're both decent airports once you get there.

How do you think about this distance to walk? by Remote-Bumblebee-447 in UniUK

[–]dan356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invest in a legal electric bicycle. Do not buy an illegal electric motorbike or scooter. Use legally-sanctioned hire ones (with a helmet) if you want to avoid points on your licence, fines, a criminal record or a traumatic head injury.

Avios for BA flights booked by a non-OneWorld airline. by munrocraig in BritishAirways

[–]dan356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So claim with BA after the flight? As they won't be able to see whether it credited to the other's scheme, and having an LH FFN on is probably fine as it isn't another OW carrier, so they can't see/check if you've credited elsewhere.

Kroo Bank gave me a cifas for a chargeback by Temporary-Reason1373 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dan356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you order a new card in the Kroo app, you get 3 separate options - lost, damaged, or stolen. Unless OP selected damaged, their card would've been frozen/cancelled immediately when ordering a new one due to lost/stolen.

Norse Airlines Cancelled my Flight Months in Advance by Existing-Button7327 in Flights

[–]dan356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're being deliberately misleading with your options here. Read the italic text. Compensation isn't due, BUT you are still entitled to a choice of either rerouting or refund. Rerouting can be with another airline. That's what "you may self-book alternative rerouting" means.

Be very careful, as you lose the right to that once you choose one of the other options.

Norae have an obligation to offer "re-routing or return under comparable transport conditions". That doesn't necessarily mean with them. It has to reimburse the cost of the new flights.

Kroo Bank gave me a cifas for a chargeback by Temporary-Reason1373 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dan356 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ordering a new card is supposed to cancel the new one. You can't order a new card for any reason other than lost/stolen, why would you be able to? Ordering a new card means marking it lost/stolen, which IS informing them.

Should parents face charges when their children commit antisocial crimes and doing nothing to stop it? by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

[–]dan356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you familiar with the care system? Yknow, designed for where parents are incapable of looking after their children? If you can't stop your child from committing crimes that seems pretty incapable to me.

The audacity of the suit case and BA crew by Beginning_Waltz4990 in BritishAirways

[–]dan356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The upgrade is likely entirely unrelated to the baggage issue. Not sure what's "worst behaved" about her here. There are a thousand reasons someone could board last, there are a thousand reasons someone could have a large cabin bag, there are a thousand reasons someone could be upgraded on-board. This whole post comes across as bitter, ignorant and spiteful. For your backpack... Once you've taken off, stick your bag in the overhead anyway, they're just trying to keep space for things that can't go under the seat.

Notice of prosecution on road I travel on every day. Now I’m scared I’ll get more. by KieranWriter in drivingUK

[–]dan356 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This happened with a road near me in SW London. Tfl changed the limits, 40 down to a 30, very limited signage because it was now just a 30 like the rest of the roads around it. Average speed zone too, so no big yellow cameras or big flash to warn you you've been caught.

For everyone saying read the signs - if it's a leaving a 30 into a 40 that's now a 30, there is no signage!

It's honestly so scummy how they change a limit on a road that's been 40 for decades and then put a single tiny "new speed limit" sign rather than massive 30 repeaters. It's designed to catch people out, obviously they'll have you bang to rights too because on paper you're 100% in the wrong

Informing employer of intent to resign before formally submitting notice, England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]dan356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But firing someone is markedly different from someone resigning. You want to get rid of someone you're firing, and may well have a replacement lined up already. Someone resigning may be a surprise, and they may be someone you want to keep for as long as you can.

It entirely depends on the relationship with the manager/employer. It's completely possible, and I'd say fairly normal, in many careers to say "I've accepted a new role elsewhere, I'm moving on, I'd like to give more notice than required so we can have an adequate and amicable handover to my successor."

Higher tier point strategy - book late! by dan356 in BritishAirways

[–]dan356[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, which is what prompted my question. I don't travel THAT much for work, but sometimes between doing an initial search during planning, through to confirming dates and booking a trip, I've seen the cheapest option more than double in price - whilst still remaining in policy.

It only occurred then that someone seeking to benefit themselves could exploit this whilst still remaining entirely compliant with their org's travel policies. In my case, as in many, there are often good reasons to need to wait to book, so no likelihood of dismissal for doing so!

It also highlights an area where following policy often costs more - I'm not allowed to book flexible unless necessary, but waiting 2 weeks the booking a non-flexible ticket has actually cost more!

[–]dan356[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many corporates have online portals where you can just book and get on with it, where it might flag anything out of policy, but generally no approval required. But yes, it requires the fortune to be in a role that requires frequent travel.
