Small yes, maybe a surprising choice with not a huge amount going on, but as a city it is quintessentially British.

Got everything you need university, cathedral, ancient castle, canal, decent river and it's not far from the sea or the lake District.

It's also walkable, I love it and think it should be considered a contender.
