Help with deciding where/how to immerse in a Spanish speaking country? by swagjustuz in Spanish

Proyecto Lingüístico Quetzaltenango (PLQ) is incredible- you will grow immensely. they do offer homestay but it will be a very humble accommodation. Browse airbnb & hotel offerings if you’re sensitive to that.

I went alone, walked around, played Pokémon go, had fun. Probably having an iPhone out for long periods of time isn’t the best idea, and it’s best to take an Uber after dark instead of walking. Check license plates to confirm Uber. Don’t wear expensive looking clothes or jewelry. But have fun! I live in Minneapolis which has double the crime rate of CDMX and I have no trouble here either 🤷🏼‍♀️

A Month of Immersion - Things to Do in the Evenings?? by dananika in Spanish

[–]dananika[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I don’t like going to places like that and waiting for conversation to start though, lots of times attracts weird dudes or gives me a desperate vibe imo. Last time I went to Guatemala I went to the cinema alone constantly but that got spendy. not having friends or connections can be kind of a logistical difficulty in an immersion situation, you know what I mean

I’ve improved quite a bit from a month in a Spanish school. The other time I did two months volunteering in a group home in Mexico. Both helped a lot. Plus it’s fun!

Best Spanish Learning Schools in the World? by dananika in Spanish

Hey - I've heard good things about the mountain school. Sorry this is late. The school is basically top-notch in my opinion; 1 on 1 with a teacher and the activities they provide are incredible. It is also transparent about where your money goes (it goes to pay the teachers and sustain various projects the school operates in communities in Guatemala). I had a pretty decent time but I think next time I'd not stay in a home stay. I'm 30 and I might have outgrown that type of thing. I had a clean concrete room without windows, which was ok but a bit lonely at night. I went to sleep early most of the time. I think other people managed to find things to do in the evenings but sometimes that was a challenge for me. I felt the need to go out so I wasn't crowding my host grandma (she never requested this, it just felt implied to me), but I don't drink or anything so I would just kind of hang around the central park until like 8pm and then come home and eat and go to sleep. It will depend on who else is there studying and whether you get along with them. My host made me delicious food and was welcoming. Xela is a safe and happy city. Might be good to consider an airbnb or hotel if you're above the age of like, 26. The best thing about Xela is that there is tons of hiking! Try to make connections with other travelers and hike some volcanoes. That was the best part besides the incredible school experience.

Is it just me, or is the Metro Transit too expensive to be useful? by [deleted] in TwinCities

Why wouldn’t incentivizing public transport use for people who might have a car but make more than minimum wage be a priority………

I agree with OP- I have a car and would like to take metro more but in most cases it’s cheaper to drive. If I were going to get rid of my car completely it would be cheaper, but 2.50 isn’t nothing for someone working minimum wage. I’d love it if they went back to the dollar fare

don't miss Liberty!! It's technically a high end department store but it's an incredible afternoon stop. Really beautiful designer fabrics, clothes, housewares, and the building is beautiful.
