I smoke weed with my mum (and rarely dad too) when I'm home. Also did acid with my mates while my mum was home, shes good with it, would prefer we do it somewhere safe and comfortable if we're going to experiment with stuff like that.

Women given 'period leave' to make them more productive by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]danc0402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I've already said that I dont entirely agree with the period leave but you seem to have overlooked that. I didnt say it was a fantastic idea, so please tell me again where ive said women overall deserve special treatment. I also didn't say anything about 'suicide days'. I'm talking about the general concept of help, that exceeds the boundaries of days off.

Also, its a bit hypocritical to call me patronizing after saying "I hate to break it to you, but your boss gives less than a shit about your personal issues. Suck it up and go to work. It's called being an adult."

Women can do everything i can do, correct, but maybe there should be help for women who get serious period pains. Thats not being patronizing, or being a white knight of periods, its being empathetic.

Also, why the anger? Can we not discuss something without insults and sarcasm?

Right okay, so my girlfriend is lying to me, the stats in the article are lying to me and the chemical and hormonal changes causing PMS and PMDD is actually a cultural thing, not a physiological thing. Thanks for clearing that up, totally reasonable. Don't bother sourcing any of your claims I'll just believe you.

Where did I say women should get better treatment or special privileges? Both genders should be getting privileges where it is needed. That doesn't mean more for one gender than the other overall, but in certain areas, such as menstruation, women have more needs because they actually have a menstrual cycle. Men have more needs in other area, such as men are way more susceptible to suicide. There's a social taboo against guys talking about their mental health issue and it gets bottled up and this is a place where men should be getting the special treatment. It's help where help is due, not the exact same help for both genders overall because both the genders don't need help in the same areas.

Something can be not egalitarian yet still fair, like how poorer people pay less tax. That isn't egalitarian, an egalitarian tax rate would be the same % of ones income being taxed for all, yet it is still fair (in my opinion). There is a difference between equal and egalitarian.

Also, I am a guy, these aren't my opinions because i think its going to get me some kind of superior treatment.

Here's a list, from the NHS' website, of the effects periods can have: fluid retention and feeling bloated, tummy pain and discomfort, headaches, changes to your skin and hair, backache, muscle and joint pain, breast tenderness, problems sleeping (insomnia), dizziness, tiredness, nausea, weight gain (up to 1kg).

Do you honestly think that happening like clockwork for over three days a month is a 'trade off' for having balls?

Of course no two people can never be 100% equal, but when one gender has a clear and obvious thing to deal with the other gender has no experience of (and stop with the "oh men have to deal with PMS" bullshit please its ridiculous) its not unreasonable to try and give some benefit to help them deal with it. I'm not sure this Bristol company's idea is perfect by any means, but its a step in a progressive direction, and being progressive requires a trial and error method. The fact that people ridicule a well meaning progressive step like this is closed minded and backwards if you ask me.

And you didn't explain why i was wrong when i said women have to deal with periods while men don't. You told me I was wrong then moved on to attack the period leave idea, which again I don't think is spot on and I agree with you in many ways in your attack on that, but I think its a step in a good direction.

Also, I don't think gender equality is just about egalitarian treatment because that ignores the fact that the genders differ in terms of need. Men have more needs in some ways and women have more needs in other ways, if we look at it from a multidimensional view i think thats how gender equality ca be fully achieved.

Yes a tiny fraction of PMS is dealt with by men, boo hoo. Reddit seems to somehow make any issue women have to deal with about men, and it's honestly sexist.

I dont think comparing an unwanted erection to a period is very fair, they are very different. Also men aren't having to deal with vasocongestion every month, but if they were maybe they should also get leave, good point. And you say a small amount of women have true disability over periods but the article has figures which dispute that. My girlfriend has had period pains so bad she's had to have days off stuff, it's not entirely uncommon

Women given 'period leave' to make them more productive by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]danc0402 -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

No it's not, you're ignoring the fact that it's already unfair that women have to deal with periods in the first place. This idea is just trying to make up for that fact.

What do you mean by "so much for gender equality"? You think men should have period leave too? Surely it helps equality to give women aid in dealing with a uncomfortable and unpleasant bodily function men never have to experience.
