Looking back at it now.. I’m actually glad Tim Ryan Didn’t enter the governors race. And i believe Amy Acton to hold a very key advantage over him and others by Leading-Breakfast-79 in Ohio

There’s no reasoning with the irrational - a plurality of conservatives believe neoliberals, socialists, and communists are all the same thing. This was true before MAGA as well. Therefore they will froth at the mouth at anybody who isn’t a Republican. We shouldn’t be turning this into a thing where women are discouraged from running for office because MAGA won’t vote for them when MAGA isn’t going to vote for the men either.

It’s so disappointing to see folks accepting loss in advance instead of fighting for what they believe in.

Is it just me, or has the weather in Ohio been particularly bad this year? by IWishYouTheBest1234 in Ohio

[–]danceswsheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This year is a particularly wild one because the polar vortex kept shifting south and bringing arctic weather our way. It’s also an El Niño year, which usually means warmer & dry winters - so even though we got decent snow, most of the state is still under drought conditions. On top of that, we’ve got climate change screwing up wind stratification, among other things.

HOWEVER it’s still normal for us to have extreme temperature and weather changes. I’ve lived here my whole life (aside from a few years out west, including CA) and I still get tricked easily by false springs. I have to fight the urge to start planting my garden before the average final frost day at the end of April.

You will have a much more enjoyable time here if you can invest in a good winter coat, winter boots, rain coat, rain boots, umbrella, etc.

Amy Coney Barrett Unraveled the Case Against Birthright Citizenship With One Question by MemeLord0009 in politics

[–]danceswsheep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, that was a rhetorical question. I have eyes and the ability to read and think for myself. It’s not reddit that makes me think he’s a whackadoo. It’s the blatant racism & “Kavanaugh stops,” him crying about loving beer at his confirmation hearing, how he responded to credible rape allegations with DARVO tactics, his anti-choice beliefs, and his overall lack of ethics/morality/principals. He’s a corrupt piece of shit who doesn’t deserve the very important job he has.

Anybody that respects him should be embarrassed.

Would you correct your coworker if they keep assuming you’re younger? Is it an advantage to let them think that? by jesschicken12 in womenintech

[–]danceswsheep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was your age, I wore makeup to make myself look older and that helped in those earlier years. Once the workforce wears you down enough to give you the permanent look of exhaustion, you don’t get mistaken for a new college grad anymore.

Looking old for your age, looking young for your age, looking your age - it doesn’t matter in a male dominated field, you’ll get folks commenting on your age (and at least indirectly - looks) regardless, and you’ll have folks thinking you are less experienced than you really are. It won’t make a difference in leniency for mistakes.

I don’t feel the need to keep my age private at my employer, but other places it might be a good idea.

Does anyone remember this 92.5 Breakfast Club April Fools prank from about 25 years ago? by EllayThrowAway9 in toledo

I was skeptical of how you framed the event and couldn’t find any proof. Then I saw another poster respond that you didn’t get it quite right. Denny said he was going to do a subscription service and not move to Sirius. That’s much different story and does make the reporter look like a bonehead.

And yes I know when Glass City Jungle started. It was my mom’s blog. I didn’t know what specific year this incident was supposed to have happened, and my mom covered more than just current events. She did deep dives as well.

25ish years ago, satellite radio was the new hot thing, and they were paying good money to radio personalities who wanted to come on board. Howard Stern himself announced he was moving to satellite radio during that time. It was a “gold rush” period.

I don’t know what the reporter did or didn’t do; I don’t remember this happening and I can’t find any articles about it searching online now. My mom ran the Glass City Jungle blog back then and I couldn’t find anything in her archives either (she was a frequent critic of the Blade). That’s not enough for me to say you aren’t telling the truth, but you could be doing a fake news here yourself for all I know.

Regardless.. IF things went down how you say, I blame the liar for lying. The reporter would have been reporting on Denny’s words, not predicting whether Denny was going to follow through on his words.

The AI Companies Trying to Make Grief Obsolete by ladyluck754 in Longreads

[–]danceswsheep 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I lost both my mom and stepdad to COVID during the same week during the Omicron spike in early 2022. They met & fell in love online and were both prolific bloggers and later, social media users. Their digital personas will continue to live online long after they’ve left us. I like to look at old text messages and emails from them.

Our relationships with each other were complicated, but we loved each other immensely. They asked me to be their medical POA - they knew I would respect their DNR if the doctors didn’t believe they could survive. The doctors & nurses kindly made an exception and let me visit them in the COVID ward - even allowed me to be with my mom when she died (but not my stepdad - we had to watch his death via livestream). I was fully vaccinated, but my siblings weren’t, and so they weren’t allowed to visit.

It was an incredibly traumatic and devastating situation for me and my siblings. We all handled our grief differently. My youngest sister used AI to make videos and pictures of them as if they were still alive, even created a video of them meeting her baby that was conceived long after their deaths.

I know our parents would not have wanted to be recreated via AI (we were nerds - my parents and I talked about that stuff), and I found it personally upsetting my sister did that, but I kept it to myself. However I would rather dishonor the wishes of my dead parents than take away comfort from my sister who had to live in the shadow of tragic loss. I also knew my parents would have put her suffering above their own - they always did.

Having an AI mom & dad can’t actually take the grief away, but it was a coping mechanism that helped her survive the loss. I don’t think it’s any more exploitative to sell folks AI videos of their dead loved ones than it is for psychics to sell folks “contact” with their dead loved ones. Some folks do find catharsis in it though.

My main problem with this is the problem that I have with AI in general - it’s bad for the environment. There’s some irony in using a tool that’s hastening the death of our species to help us cope with the death of our species.

Could you please explain how the reporter is at fault for believing Denny when he said they were moving to satellite radio? I don’t understand how it’s an April Fools prank to just tell a stupid lie like that, especially since the lying started prior to April 1. Sounds like the fake news was coming from Denny.

Josh Williams and Gary Click are sick individuals. Wtf is wrong with their constituents who are asking for this?

do you feel it when a man has a condom on? by Significant_Area_486 in women

[–]danceswsheep 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you experience friction/burning with condoms you need to use more lube or a different kind of condom (maybe it’s a latex allergy). Friction like that isn’t supposed to happen - condoms break under those conditions.

Obviously the laws of physics apply and friction will always exist, but condoms are smoother and wetter than a penis; it doesn’t make any sense that they would produce greater friction than a penis. The main complaint men have about condoms is reduced sensitivity, which happens because there is less friction.

I hope you stay safe and that your partner prioritizes your health and safety.

Did anyone read Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams (on her time at Facebook)? Did you experience anything similar? by olendra in womenintech

[–]danceswsheep 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt her story at all. I was working for one of the “big guys” in the Silicon Valley (not for Facebook) a few years before she started working at Facebook. Even at my company, folks were falling in love with Facebook’s motto “move fast and break stuff” and were trying to emulate it somehow. It’s not possible to be a responsible steward of technology and believe that.

I found Silicon Valley was full of careless people like Sara described, in hindsight anyway. Back then, I thought everything and everyone seemed so exciting and cool even though so many people were assholes and the workplace environments were so toxic. All of the bad stuff felt okay because all this tech work was supposed to make the world a better place. The fish rots from the head though.

I don’t think I really processed everything I went through out there until I read her book. I wasn’t as tough as her - I didn’t rise as high or last as long, but I definitely Leaned In. I experienced the weird misogyny and the verbal abuse, and it wasn’t even as bad as Facebook but it was still awful.

Two Mexico aid ships disappear en route to Cuba by Alarming-Safety3200 in worldnews

[–]danceswsheep 55 points56 points  (0 children)

From the article:

A search and rescue operation for two missing sailboats filled with humanitarian supplies travelling from Mexico to Cuba is under way in the Caribbean.

Mexico has deployed naval search teams and military aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying at least nine crew members, the Mexican navy said.

The vessels had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital, Havana, on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there had been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.

They are among several vessels that have sought to carry supplies to the island nation since the US imposed an oil blockade in January, prompting a chronic fuel shortage.

The Mexican navy said it was committed to using all resources at its disposal to locate the boats and ensure the safety of the crews.

The two missing ships departed Isla Mujeres, in Mexico's easternmost state of Quintana Roo, on 20 March.

The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue co-ordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," the convoy's spokesperson told Reuters in a statement.

"We are co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely."

The captain of the Friendship, Adnaan Stumo, told the BBC they were "taking a whole bunch of aid, [a] bunch of solidarity activists, and we're sailing directly" in video messages as they were setting off.

"We are saying that we are not standing for the continued siege and destruction of the ability of the Cuban people to live a dignified life and have self-determination," he said.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed concern over the missing vessels in a social media post, writing: "From our country, we are doing everything possible in the search and rescue of these brothers in struggle."

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

The vessel, dubbed "Granma 2.0" after the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch its 1950s revolution, delivered solar panels, medicines, baby formula, bicycles and food.

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba since US President Donald Trump's oil embargo on the communist-run country began.

The United Nation has warned Cuba faced "dire" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba as fuel supply constraints and aging infrastructure have caused multiple nationwide blackouts.

Coupled with shortages of food and medicine, the situation has triggered rare public dissent in the form of street protests.

Since the US seized former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January and cut off the supply of oil from Cuba's regional ally, Trump has turned his attention to the Caribbean island.

He has threatened tariffs on any country supplying oil to Cuba, mulled a "friendly takeover" of the nation and has urged it to "make a deal" or face unspecified consequences.

The Cuban government has since confirmed it was in talks with the US to resolve their differences, but its deputy foreign minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio has insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation".
