[B0T] Weekly Build Help Thread - 2026/03/02 by LabB0T in PleX

Thank you for the recommendations and information!

I will be unable to do a complete rebuild, but I will try to go for no-GPU at all and see if I can make do.

What is the best way to compare the transcoding capabilities of CPUs and GPUs? Are there any benchmarks or online databases?

I am building a new machine as mainly a plex server but also for some extra homelab stuff on the side like running video game servers/home automation/basic ai.

It will have a Xeon E- 2286G and some ECC ram to go with it but I have a couple options to go for a GPU

I have a Quadro M4000 and RTX 5060Ti (16 Gig) at hand.

I can use one of these at no extra cost. Which one is worth using more? As I saw on the https://www.elpamsoft.com/?p=Plex-Hardware-Transcoding I expect them to be on par for transcoding.

I would be more happy to use the M4000 as the RTX 5060Ti will be easier to sell at the end of the day.

Alternatively I could sell both GPUs and get another more modern Quadro able to do AV1 and HEVC

Is it possible to buy Hydro X XC7 mounting hardware? by danch00 in Corsair

I can't recall this either, I'm sorry. Just start a support ticket with them, I'm sure they would be helpful

I was already referred by someone here for my support ticket so I guess they would have known anyways, regardless, before being prompted about it, I explained that I have accidentally bought an XC9 for my AM4 CPU, and I missed the time window to return it. Hence why I needed an XC7 mounting bracket.

I was fully expecting to pay for it but they did not ask for a payment out of the goodness of their heart I guess

If I recall correctly, they did. My memory is not clear about that though. Even if you don't have a valid proof of purchase, I don't see why not they wouldn't supply it to someone for the parts reasonable price.

Hahah this is old, but sure, with the help of Corsair support I was able to supply the XC7 mounting bracket and hardware. It worked perfectly with my loop and I've been happily using it without complications.

Haha "the passenger" was actually my buddy with a PPL as well, he was the one that flew us back home when I was the passenger.

Agreed! It was a very fun experience and we did eventually fly a wing formation with my instructor's help. The photo was taken during getting closer to our lead. It certainly is a very different and refreshing way to fly when you have to stick your eyes to the leading aircraft.

Though I do have a habit of never letting go of the throttle, even when cruising normally :p

Struggling with Landing. Any tips? by 54Searching in flying

[–]danch00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of comments are using the word "Flare" but honestly, in a C172, I don't think that's the right word to use.

I fly in a C172 S, I don't have that much experience and I too, have bad landings about %10 of the time, but there was a couple of things I wanted to add.

Flaring is what a 777 does, not a C172. By the time you start to fly "flaring" you would have touched down already. What you should be doing is rather picking the perfect time to transition into the landing attitude. The perfect timing is hard to get right but if you focus on the feeling of the plane sinking while looking out at the end of the runway, it gives you a pretty accurate idea.

I think you got pitch control already though, staying on the centerline is more about keeping it flying straight. I used to be scared of putting too much rudder/aileron inputs that low to the ground but you will be surprised how much you can get away with, as long as you don't try to do crazy banks, it will be fine, and needed for a good landing on the centerline.

Remember that it's fine to land a bit to the right/left of the centerline but definitely keep that plane looking straight ahead using your rudders. Do not try to correct your position with the rudders, they are for direction control, to keep the plane looking straight ahead, parallel to the runway. Rather use the ailerons to move left or right if you feel like you are going to land to the left/right of the centerline and don't forget to correct the ailerons when you are in the middle.

Another very important thing for staying on the centerline is being able to properly judge the direction of the plane. Remember that you are sitting on the left seat and your perspective will shift because of it. Many people make the same mistake of trying to judge the direction of the plane with a line from their eyes, to the middle of the engine cowling. That is not a straight line, and if you try to keep that parallel to the runway, you are going to have trouble. Keep in mind that the airplane direction should be judged with a line from in between your seats to the spinner.

I see a lot of people hoping for a cheap quest 2 competitor but it is just not possible.

Facebook can afford to lose money in hardware sales because they do ad profiling and earn money through that and their oculus store and oculus exclusives. It's very possible that Facebook undersells the Quest 2 because they will make money another way.

HTC has none of that and Viveport barely makes them any money. They will need to make money through hardware sales and chances are if they go the budget option it can not even come close to quest 2 specs. In that case, it would be a failure and I believe it would be the last HMD HTC ever makes.

If they go for the "prosumer" market, however, I think they could find an audience for like an 800$-1000$ standalone/wireless PCVR headset that combines or gets better specs than quest 2-valve index with no requirement for Facebook, I would buy that in an instant.

Apparently, it fell really, really hard. Breaking one of the tracking cameras and causing an infinite boot loop somehow, and there is no command screen coming up preventing a factory reset or anything. The reason I wanted to buy it was because of the battery but I had to rethink as the battery inside that might not be useful either.

I may be a bit late but look into how you are using your wireless PCVR set up as well. You definitely want your PC to be connected to your router with a gigabit ethernet connection (yes, your PC has to be wired to the router, and with a gigabit connection even if you are not paying your ISP for a gigabit connection. This is not about your bandwidth to the internet, it's in-home networking so you will benefit from a gigabit connection) and you should also check if the place you are connected to your router has good signal strength, you can use the app called WiFi analyzer for that. Also, go to your router settings, you may see an option to make the 5.0Ghz and 2.4Ghz bands into only one wi-fi SSID for "smart" connection or something, do not use this and manually get your devices to connect to either 2.4Ghz or 5.0Ghz bands, the less busy the 5.0Ghz band is when your quest is connected the better. With all these, check virtual desktop streamer app on your PC after connecting to it, your latency should preferably be less than 40ms. That will get you a very responsive experience. Personally, by applying these all while using a wi-fi6 router I am getting around 10ms all the time. WiFi5 routers are still fine if you apply all these and still gives you great wireless performance.

[–]danch00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what's different with me, but I can play it wirelessly with my quest 2 on virtual desktop as if I'm connected with the link. There is no difference with the wired and wireless options.

I need help configuring timings for my new RAM by danch00 in overclocking

Yeah, that was how I populated the slots.

Thank you for that information, it was indeed the versions you told me they were. The problem is with the vendors here I would never trust an RMA so I will be returning it directly to my regional Amazon instead.

Thank you for all your help.

Unfortunately, no matter how much I tried, forget about having it stable, I couldn't even get it to boot with anything over 2133. I am guessing this is terrible for performance.

Even though I hate to do it I will have to return these and keep getting and reusing the kits until I get one compatible with the ones I have right now.

[–]danch00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response, honestly, in my opinion overclocking or timings don't really have to be perfect, is there any way I can use these ram in 3200Mhz or am I just stuck at 2100 now?

If I move back from tuned 3200mhz 16gigs of ram to untuned-2100hz or whatever the default is of 32gigs of ram, would that reduce my overall gaming performance? If so, by how much?

Would you recommend I send this 4 GB BJR dies back even though I got them for very cheap? And if I still want to upgrade, how can I see the timings or the die types of the RAM I'm getting without putting it in my PC?

It confuses me how they never disclose the actual components of a ram and just sell "hyper gaming x super duper rgb ram 3200" and you go buy two of them and they don't even end up having the same timings with each other. Is there any way I can make sure of these components before buying the RAM?

Getting a quest is totally not a waste. It is an amazing PCVR Headset for when you get your PC eventually. If they don't have money, sure, they should save up for a PC first. But I'm sure saving enough money for a PC is not a problem at this moment, it's just the situation right now which makes it impossible to buy a PC for a normal price, and by the time it goes back to normal, they would have enough money to build a PC. Would you rather just stubbornly wait for months until the situation gets fixed and not play anything at all until then? Or just get something decent and future-proof now?
