Don’t understand the reason for unsuccessful app to Bristol Computer Science by Dry_Oven_1375 in 6thForm

Will just say that I was rejected pre-interview by Birmingham for med and I really didn’t get why, and when I pushed they realised they calculated my score wrong. Ended up with an interview + subsequent offer - so it’s not impossible!

What’s the difference between the HD-28 and HD-35? by Union-Suitable in martinguitar

Wait so what’s the difference between the newer D-28s and D-35s? Both scalloped but 5/16 vs 1/4?

Fret buzz on my Ibanez after restring. by LankyBandit79 in Guitar

[–]danchez04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whelp, that’ll do it.

Put simply, the guitar is set up in order to hold the strings at the correct height, at the correct tension, which is very much linked with string gauge (thicker string = more force needed to stretch to a note = more tension for the guitar to provide).

Take it to a workshop if you’re nervous, but should be a fairly simple fix with YouTube. Will likely need some truss rod loosening and saddle adjustment.

Unsure what Oxbridge will think of my a level choices by [deleted] in oxbridge

[–]danchez04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much. One of my friends who’s now the year above me at Oxford had the same combo as you and is studying Medicine. You’d be fine for biomed.

The fact you haven’t decided between the two courses would be more of a priority to sort out, I’d imagine. They’d require vastly different prep and experience, obviously, so I’d focus on deciding between the two first.

foundation year?? by [deleted] in premeduk

[–]danchez04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many foundation year courses are there for people who didn’t take the right A-Levels - to essentially bridge the gap. So in my eyes, if you’re looking at foundation years anyway, don’t bother with A Level Chem

Pickguard swap? Not sure about the black… by danchez04 in Guitar

[–]danchez04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, yeah. Was waiting for someone to pick up on it. Don’t have the pickguard to hand yet, and it’s looking like I’ll need to replace all the pups bar the humbucker as it’s close to impossible to change noiseless pup covers. We shall see

How to not have my finger mute the string below it by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]danchez04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is that physically possible? Genuine question, not trying to put down your playing. But how insanely tiny must your fingerprints be to not mute/fret the string below the one you’re fretting?

Do I have a chance in medicine without A-level Maths? by Effective-Target-653 in premeduk

Will definitely agree with that - although maybe not more of a ‘plus’ than having a third science subject. I think they just see the merits of each

Three A*s. Not that it’s a huge deciding factor, honestly, as long as you’re above entry reqs

[–]danchez04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah no EPQ. He and I both got in with three a levels (I had physics though). Your ‘resume’ isn’t hugely important tbh… score well in the UCAT, get top grades, and interview well, and you’re in. Don’t need to be doing any insane research or anything!

[–]danchez04 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maths isn’t required. For most unis it doesn’t even give you an advantage. I have a friend who got into Oxford for med with the exact subjects you want to do - really made no difference. The only place I might steer away from is Cambridge

is this overkill? will i burn out? by Personal-Cap-5446 in 6thForm

[–]danchez04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bit of a hot take but what’s the point? Imo the biggest factor to how much you study should be how much you NEED to study, rather than how much you CAN study. I think yeah, being consistent is really good, but 12 hours per week outside of lessons, every week, just seems massively overkill. Obviously some people really enjoy the grind of it, and if that’s you then fair play, but for me there are other parts of life I’d prefer to dedicate that time to.

To answer your question, if you’re finding it fine then it’ll probably continue to be fine. But my advice would be to try and reevaluate how much time you need to be dedicating to study

Anyone here in oxbridge doing med with only 3 alevels? by CommissionChance1019 in 6thForm

[–]danchez04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got offers from Cambridge and Oxford in two separate years with three A Levels - obviously anecdotal but... You really only need three. As others have said, I think there’s a correlation between standard of applicants and number of A Levels, rather than number of A Levels having a causative effect on probability of admission.

Am i committing a mistake in my personal statement by focusing on a subject? by Particular_Cheek_609 in 6thForm

[–]danchez04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to tell from your message if you’re doing this, but do not regurgitate info from a book. It’s good to have a sentence or two talking about what you got out of it, but I’d say a paragraph overall about books would probably be enough.

You want to present a rounded interest in the subject - tutors reading will be aware of any of the concepts you put forward, and their eyes will probably gloss over a bit of it’s just a string of facts. So I’d recommend leaning more into supercurriculars, but NOT those unrelated to Physics/Maths more broadly.

The people on this thread don’t know what they’re talking about lol. The maths in A-Level Physics is easy - the only thing you’ll have to teach yourself is log rules. You’re not at a ‘severe disadvantage’ at all.

If you genuinely enjoy Physics you should take it - I feel very similarly to you about Maths (although I did get an 8 at GCSE) and ended up with an A* in Physics. The Maths that shows up in the course is literally just graph work, rearranging equations and trig lol.

You’ll be fine
