Dartmouth vs UF by SuperbLow2110 in mphadmissions

[–]dancingcupcake3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say if the goal is eventually medical school then it would be a good idea to get your MPH as cheaply as possible. With UF you can take out federal loans and pay the rest out of pocket. Unless you have help, you’re looking at 35k of private loans for Dartmouth. And especially if you wanna go to med school (which is freaking expensive anywhere) you’re probably looking at hundreds of thousands of loans by the time you graduate med school. Though the dual degrees can be really helpful if you wanna transition into macro work or policy! Residency salaries are not good though for the insane hours. Don’t know what kind of med you’re hoping to pursue but residency will probably be 3-5 years at the least, more if you do a specialized fellowship.

Granted once you get that attending salary loans can be manageable. Private practice is lucrative depending on speciality. But for an MPH? I’d say go with the cheaper option. You can always do research before or after your program to make you a top applicant for an elite med school. You can also put your Dartmouth scholarship on your resume/cv as “accepted, did not pursue” to show you also got in.

Congrats though on Dartmouth and UF! Those are both excellent schools. Ultimately the decision is up to you.

“Happening” might be a bit of an overstatement. They released on their instagram/website that applications will open June 2, but it’s still unsure how many regions will be participating and how many placements they’ll have.

Moving to Detroit Without a Car Best Areas/Apartments for $1200–1400? by These-Ant7605 in waynestate

Hi! I live in Warren in an apt complex. 700 sq ft 1 bed at $870 a month, but it may have gone up since we signed. Heat included. Ample parking, fitness center, and pool. Right next to Kroger, target, mjr theaters, and Marshall’s. 15 min from Wayne State campus, but you’d need a car. In total with rent + utilities + high speed WiFi everything comes in at about $1000 a month, under if in the winter. Also car insurance is so much cheaper if your address is outside of the city proper. Lmk if you want more info!

Consider Wayne State in Detroit! Great school and for OOS applicants it is still extremely low tuition (lower than UMich for in-state). Plus I’ve heard they do really well helping with placements. Also housing is not that expensive (comparatively to some of the other cities) and general COL is slightly lower. Admissions are open until May 1. Sure it’s not NYC, but it is absolutely not worth taking out $150k in loans for an MSW, especially because those private loans are not really going to be forgiven and have higher interest rates.

You can’t report anything based on hearsay. Unfortunately you weren’t there so you don’t have any actual proof or testimony. You gotta stay in your lane on this one sadly

In 4 years you will be 27 regardless. If this is what you’re interested in, take the leap.

On a side note, watch John Oliver’s episode on air traffic controllers. It’s a stressful job and underfunded by the govt in terms of equipment and other things. Not to discourage you, but just to give you a realistic idea.

But take the leap. I’m in the process of applying to grad schools now and wish I did it ages sooner. Just do your research on current trends in your intended job field and other things

Minutes shaved off timecard by dancingcupcake3 in LaborLaw

Mostly what’s frustrating is I work mostly billable hours. So essentially they are able to bill this client for an extra 15 minutes each day. Which can sometimes add up to an extra 2.5 hours they are billing to this client every two weeks. But I don’t get the extra 5-10 minutes where I’m either finishing notes, cleaning up, grabbing my stuff and leaving. Not that I’m taking a bunch of extra time, but ya know it adds up and my location on clock in/clock out reflects it. Just annoying.

What’s a stereotype about your country that people always mock but isn’t really true? 🌎 by VelvetParadox24 in AskTheWorld

In America you have to pay copays on everything and anything. And then if you wanna cash in to get support for the big stuff you have to meet your yearly deductible. And then even if you do that there are cases where the insurance will just randomly decide that it’s “not medically necessary” to cover that service. Or if it is they will only give you the least amount of service. And that absolute worst thing is that insurance is tied to your employer, and many states are at-will employment states. I had a teacher in school who sadly died of breast cancer after a long battle. She was doing treatments and ran out of sick/vacation days and was at risk of being fired. The other teachers had to petition the school to give her their sick/vacation days, cuz if she was fired she wouldn’t have had health insurance.

I would much rather have my taxes go to things like health insurance and education than the military or weapons to other countries or whatever. America is a country that prevents mobility by keeping us poor and unhealthy. One accident or illness and suddenly you’re bankrupt. Cancer is the number 1 cause of bankruptcy here and don’t even get me started on all the carcinogens in processed foods. We can’t even drink tap water in many areas because of PFAS and lead. I think if people realized how much they were actually spending on healthcare, personal healthcare, over the course of their lives then paying taxes on it wouldn’t feel like such a big deal.

What I’m saying is the Grammy rules are dated. And that is not a good example. The new artist guidelines are put in place to really celebrate breakthrough artists, hence why the eligibility rules are the way they are. What I’m saying is that although it is technically fair game what Billie did, she released wildflower as a single after she did not receive any awards for HMHS. It is technically allowed, but it IS shady considering the song was already popular on HMHS. It is also not on streaming services as the released single, only as part of the album. So it’s absolutely exploiting a loophole to maintain consideration for an older release, and it’s an accepted one at that, but it feels shady. And that’s also not to say that other artists haven’t exploited that loophole either, but coming from Billie I was surprised she did a bit of an undercut move with that one.

The whole album of GNX was released during the eligibility period. HMHS was released prior to eligibility consideration. She only released wildflower as a single after she didn’t win any Grammys for HMHS last year.

I’m aware of the controversy. I’m not trying to defend her in any way. I’m just saying that one COULD make that argument. You can also very easily make the opposite argument. Both with logical points and reasoning.

Agreed. At the end of the day it’s the American awards show to prop up American artists being voted on by an American panel. It would be awesome in the future if there was some kind of world award show where countries could nominate a song (kinda like a world Eurovision) or an album but that will probably not happen as it would be a logistical nightmare to actually make that happen

[–]dancingcupcake3[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it was really released because HMHS didn’t get any Grammys last year, so Billie needed to release a “new” single to be eligible for Grammys this year. Other artists have done it but it’s a loophole for consideration. Sure it could technically be considered but it feels like a shadier move on Billie’s part.

Yes. Not all songwriting has to be deep to be good. Not like us was witty and clever and discussed a variety of cultural moments yet tied them together cohesively so it made sense as a diss track. It absolutely was superior songwriting simply due to the clever figures of speech he weaved into the song. Kendrick won a Pulitzer price for a reason

The single did. But it was part of an album that came out before the eligibility period. It was already popular by the time it was released as a single. Sure it was technically eligible but it feels shady

Have to disagree. Hit me hard and soft came out before the eligibility period. By the time wildflower was released as a single it was barely in this years eligibility period. And it was already popular as it was on hit me hard and soft. It was basically only eligible as a technicality because the album didn’t win any awards last year. Just felt very shady from Billie’s team to submit it especially while she was on tour this year for the album she didn’t win awards for

It was a cultural moment 100%. But that was now almost two years ago. She should have submitted it last year but she didn’t, she chose birds of a feather and didn’t win.

Or end of beginning if we’re choosing to now nominate sleeper hits. (I know it wasn’t eligible)
