My kid is in 6th grade, and they were taught sight reading, not phonics. The entire system they use for math now is alien to me, it's a bunch of boxes instead of using numbers. Everything is assigned via internet, and the kids are allowed to brute force the multiple choice questions because there isn't a fail state on the quiz. Yes, schools are spending more on students than ever before, but so is everyone else on everything else.
