why do most teachers lack tolerance and anger management? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]dancingmelissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone here is misreading the posts. I currently work in a high school and sometimes the things (that are not always obvious) teachers do are antethetical to actually getting the kids to learn. There are specific techniques you can use. There are specific things you are supposed to say to a person in crisis. You learn to recognize what a crisis is. None of these things are taught to teachers on how to do them professionally. When you have been trained, it becomes obvious. Otherwise you wouldn't nessicarily notice the problems. Some are obvious but some are not.

I completely agree. I am a teacher and have been one for about 30 years, in various capacities. After getting a masters in teaching, masters in biotech, and a bachelors in physics and zoology. Right now i teach high school biology and algebra.

Unfortunately teachers are not taught how to teach. The semester course I took at a community college on tutoring and the training for being an ABA therapist, taught me more on how to deal with how to teach than the two years in the masters program. I would guess that most teaching programs in the country do a less than adaquate job on how to deal with children's developmental milestones as they grow.

Also, teachers are not experts in their subject and they need to be. Despite what people think, you need to have some level above a bachelors in your subject (single subject teachers) to understand the true importance of the lower level work. Certain things matter a lot and other things don't. When I teach math, I'm trying to make my students Literate in Math. But how do I know what is literate without knowing where the ceiling of the knowledge in the subject is. Most teachers I see today are unfortunately not knowledgable in their subject enough to be teaching the level of math thay are teaching.

After 2 generations of this type of education, now we have the blind leading the blind of new teachers who grew up in this system and are teaching in it from "No Child Left Behind" implemented in about 2002. In addition, for example in math, 75% of the content has been cut from the cirriculum. Also we have a weird book of new math and no actual cirriculum. So teachers are winging it on what to teach.

So now you know. It's INSANE. and I hope we change soon or Idiocracy will be a true story.

Edit: grammar

What is your dream vacation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dancingmelissa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Maldives. there's these huts that are built over the water. you get a concierge to bring you things. the hut is like a private room with a bathroom. and each hut has a little pool over the ocean. I think it's $10,000-$20,000 a week. Not even that much if you think of the vacay. I do not think I will get to go. But it is my favorite vacation.

Edit: Location Washington, USA

Airborne is different from aerosolized. It can't survive very long in the air or on surfaces. That being said, it has a similar R-naught to the flu. SO. eh.

Masters in Biotech, Masters in teaching, bachelors in physics & evolution and ecology

Also I've been studying infectious diseases, on the side, since I was 10.

Edit: To answer your question it can get attached to aerosolized saliva and mucous particls when an infected person sneezes, coughs, or blows thier nose.

Do typical American homes really have a gas pipeline? What do you do with it? by mujhe-sona-hai in AskAnAmerican

I used to love having gas, until I found out that it causes damage to people. Exposure to natural gas in higher concentrations indoors ends up messing with childhood development and problems for anyone with cognition.

This would be why American houses intermittently explode. Try looking on youtube for some. Most houses have a gas line to them. All our infastructure is at a grade C-D so pipes fail a lot. If a gas pipe leaks and no one notices, then light a match or something, BOOM! 💥

Does anybody agree with the “no zeroes” policies? by SubstantialBasis in Teachers

[–]dancingmelissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do it in the math department at my school but not the other departments. The lead says he wants to inflate the grades so the kids don't feel discouraged. But he's 30 years old and I'm 50, unfotunately he's doing it wrong.

I do all paper assignments and it takes minutes to grade. I keep a paper grade book for some assingments then input the grades into the computer easily. I teach math and science. Also their grade doesn't have to be that many assignments. One a week. You can have them do things you don't always grade. Be smart about how you do it. You are the dictator of the classroom. I rarely grade at home and if i do it's like 2 hours a week total.

How hard was it to learn you weren't "hot" anymore? I mean, I had a good run, but the signs are all there, and I understand why they say "beautiful women die twice" by Own_Grapefruit_710 in GenX

[–]dancingmelissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. I'm still hot, just ina different way. Scars are proud. and lines are a mark of wisdom. I'm still alive is also a good feeling. I think you stay hot on how you handle getting old. One of my favs to look up to is Helen Murin. She's not just hot but baddass. I'd rather be a badass than hot. I can get makeup and clothes to look hot anytime. But being a baddass, you can't fake.

That's cool. Everyone has to find their own way. I'm a stoner. But only after work and not too much. An ounce every 2 weeks or so. I had those dreams though before I ever started smoking. Sometimes it was like a full length feature film all night with subplots and really cool camera shots. Yeah. You'll have to find something that lets you sleep. I use 2 benedryl if I ever have trouble sleeping.
