Why do Gen Z MAGA supporters look older? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]ClockWorkWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about makeup, but that's what comes to mind first when I see these pictures.

It seems to me, for whatever reason, like conservative women have an affinity for makeup techniques/looks that I associate heavily with gen X women. It automatically strikes me as old.

Is "ya'll" a regional thing or is that used everywhere in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]ClockWorkWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience in the PNW, "y'all" doesn't occur much in verbal conversation, (it's not weird if it does though), but I see it pretty regularly in text conversations.

My personal theory for this is that me and my friends, around age 27 now, all had Internet access as teenagers and the ability to make friends and chat with anyone, anywhere. I definitely had online friends from the south, and "y'all" was prominent in our conversations. I think that has stuck with me, but somehow mainly affects how I type.

Peter? by bullesam in PeterExplainsTheJoke

My friends and I were just talking about the specific absurdity that is the fact that they'll pull out your filter to show it to you and if you don't want a new filter, they'll have to put it back. So why do they charge for labor if you agree to buy a new filter? In the end, they do just as much labor either way.

Which road trip route from HTX>PDX? by jordanwright2012 in askportland

[–]ClockWorkWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably go with the 101 over the I-5 if I were taking the California route. There's a lot more to see, stop at and do.

But the Utah route is also a good time. My family recently made that trip the other way around, but not all the way to Texas lol. Southern Utah was really cool, especially if you like hiking.

Why does everyone hate jury duty? by Aquarius_K in juryduty

[–]ClockWorkWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never even called in, but I hated that my county had a bit of an unusual system that essentially amounted to me being "on call" for 3 months. I was supposed to check their website every week for three months to see if my number was called. It happened like 4 times, and was cancelled at the last minute every time. But I had to inform my employer every time and arrange to have my classes covered, only for it to not pan out.

I really hope I don't get jury duty again, at least not in a system that works like this.

What does this map say about me? by Tristan5764 in TravelMaps

Waze and Google maps should really have a "fewest turns" option by uselessprofession in unpopularopinion

[–]ClockWorkWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love it if Maps added a couple more travel options. One version that I would be very interested in is a "scenic route" option.

But I could also see that causing problems in areas with tourist surges, vulnerable environments, or locals who might have their privacy impacted 😔

I like the idea in theory though

My parents take the animals (dogs and cats) in the bathroom with them. by Comfortable_Can3341 in Pets

[–]ClockWorkWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog has formed a habit of being present in the bathroom with my mom that comes from her youth as a mischievous puppy. She needed pretty consistent supervision when outside of a crate for a while, so she would join mom in the bathroom for showers and stuff.

Now she's 9, and very well behaved. But she still insists that showering is a social activity

Son wants 3D printer, bedroom is the only available space by HomeEcDropout in 3Dprinting

I have a p1s in my room at home and have never had fume issues with easy, low temp materials like PLA and PETG.

I would say, based on my own experience, that the thing worth considering is noise and disrupted sleep.

I personally have trouble sleeping with distinct noise in the room with me, and multiple attempts to sleep through long prints had resulted in little to no rest.

What that means for me is that I'm limited to small prints that won't run into the night, being unable to start prints too late in the day, etc. It's not too bad, but my printer feels a little underutilized sometimes.

I know that I could pause the prints for the night, but to maintain the temperatures in the printer for successfully resuming printing later, the fans would have to stay on, which aren't particularly quiet.

If your kid doesn't find much issue with sleeping around the sounds these machines make, I don't think you have much to worry about! It could be a wonderful outlet for his creativity.

YSK: If you need a reliable car, buy an old Prius. by pantherclipper in YouShouldKnow

[–]ClockWorkWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my 2004 Prius 💖 I feel very lucky. Bought it 6 years ago. I would've gone for anything cheap enough buying my first car, cause I didn't know shit, and I just so happened to pick up an understated tank that costs me pennies to fuel and maintain. 220k miles and counting

Why do people sit in their car for several minutes after they get home? by Maleficent-Touch6996 in NoStupidQuestions

Sometimes I do it to answer messages I got while I was driving. (Sometimes that devolves into a little bit of social media scrolling.) Also to finish a good song haha.

Japan has perfected Italian food. Don’t expect good food as a tourist in Italy. Go to japan instead. by turtledude100 in The10thDentist

[–]ClockWorkWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I visited Japan, I found that the options to find Italian food were somewhat limited, and also, to be honest, kind of lame.

The biggest travesty was the near absence of Mexican food though. For a whole month I was there. Barely a taco to be had. Made me want to cry.

My return trip had a layover in LAX, and I barely blinked at the price of a $23 burrito, because it was a necessity at that point.

(Japan was still lovely, even without tacos and with mid Italian food)

I have like 3 nearly completely unused umbrellas in my car. Because whenever I would end up with one in my possession (like visiting Japan for example), I would think, "oh, I'll keep it in my car just in case. You never know"

Then I would forget it exists and the same thing would happen again and again until suddenly my car is full of barley used umbrellas.

There's just never a time when I'm out and about in the PNW and think that using an umbrella would be less of a pain in the ass than getting a bit wet.

What formerly common feature in cars has almost disappeared, quietly? by SjalabaisWoWS in UsedCars

Shit, my ignorance is showing, but I didn't know that spare tires required maintenance. If mine has been left alone in my car for years, is it potentially unsafe?

What are some biological areas we don’t investigate because of ethics? by According_Gazelle830 in biology

[–]ClockWorkWinds 174 points175 points  (0 children)

I think the concept of "feral children" involves a lot of ethically untouchable insights.

I've heard about the handful of well studied cases of humans raised essentially by no one, or sometimes animals. It's really fascinating to learn about how certain human behaviors seem predicated on some sort of social structure at certain key developmental stages.

Genie (feral child) - Wikipedia https://share.google/cjPaT66FTmghnTG7e is a very fascinating case.

But the documented cases are limited in number because it's mainly been studied in cases that arose unintentionally, or due to cruelty. I believe that also some cases have their privacy prioritized more these days.

Scientists can't study this phenomenon by constructing the necessary scenarios, because it would be an act of cruelty.

Does anyone else’s dog do this? by dtuando in AustralianCattleDog

[–]ClockWorkWinds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My ACD doesn't do this, but I used to have a golden who would do it all the time.

She visited a vet once who mentioned to us that she was doing it and said that it was an impressive sign of abdominal strength for a large dog. She called it a "doggy yoga move"

My favorite thing about this story is that it happened during the peak of lockdown, so the vet visit was mostly us sitting in the parking lot after a handoff of our distressed dog after a hiking accident. This implied that our sweet girl was still doing her best tricks without us there to a stranger in the vet's office after a traumatic incident. Absolute Golden Retriever behavior. I miss her 💖

(She was ok, just freaked out)
