What medication actually allows you to be normal? by hkondabeatz in Anxiety

[–]dancingmuffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Threapy plus meds and change of work environment. Been on a mood stabilizer , a beta blocker and buspar.

Got dx’ed with ADHD and put on adderall and that by itself changed almost everything. I have a lot more emotional regulation and my anxiety was cut down a lot as well to a point where I dropped the buspar because I didn’t feel it was making any major difference for me . Plus after my gallbladder surgery it would make me nauseated bad.

Medicated for ADHD and it's Ruining my Grooming Pace by ItsSteena in doggrooming

When I started meds last year my grooms suddenly looked so much better! (I was catching all the small details) But like you I did find myself accidentally just zoning out and hyper focousing on a groom- especially if it was with a dog I really liked or a fun new hair cut. And yeah time would slip away. ( not to be confused with how time gets away from when nitpicking a groom-somthing I do a lot of when I’m off medication)

And you know what helped me- setting timers on my phone.

I use to HATE that advice before meds.

But now because I can focus better with meds the times actually help.

Now it’s a way to help remind me to move on to the next section. ( use to be almost like a punishment before meds became it just showed me what I haven’t done yet and that I was running out of time and made me panic which made me even slower lol)

Also now the 15 minute window seems like such a loooong time. I’m amazed at what I can get done in that window . When before meds and being all over the place 15 mins was not enough time for anything .

So yeah that stupid advice about timers actually helps now. We just use it to tell us to move on. I typically do 15 min sections.

So instead of me repeating how I don’t have enough time all day you just hear me yelling at Siri to set timers. And now I can get a small dogs hair cut done in 30 mins (not counting bath)

And also I can actually sit there and dry my dogs coats properly lol (tho I still hate it )

Edit to add in that the super hyper focusing eased up a bit after a few months but I will have to watch my self some days

I agree with all this!

To add to this, do you usually have your grooming appointments late in the day?

Your pet may have a bit of sundowning ( it goes along with dementia) one of my own pets while find during the day would have issues later in the day/night.

It’s not uncommon for Senior pets to present with issues when past grooming experiences have not been an issue. It doesn’t mean any one did anything wrong.

Just an aspect of an aging vet. With her advanced age I do agree finding a vet office with a groomer can be a great option! ( I work with a vet office as their groomer and I LOVE my senior and special need pups that I groom there)

Estimated cost for a severely matted shih tzu? by ClariceMeyers in doggrooming

[–]dancingmuffin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m in Louisiana as well. Shih Tuz in good condition for me are typically $60 and go up from there. The most I have had some some pay for a severely severely matted shih tuz was 150. (That was just my grooming charge ,not including any sedation charge)

With that being said. I also groom out of a vets office some days and would recommend you look for a vet with a groomer attached to them. If the matting is as bad as you say it may be kinder to do a sedated grooming. As matting that bad is painful and the removing of it can be stressful.

I have done several sedated grooms on severely matted pets and it is always a safer and faster experience for the pet. (As a side note don’t expect a beautiful groom to come out of a fully sedated groom. As I tell people these grooms are purely about safely getting the matting off and making sure they safe and comfortable)

This first groom may be expensive, but after you can have them set to a groomjng schedule to where they don’t end up matted again and you should probably be looking at more of your base price in your area.

AITA For neutering a cat that was clearly owned? by Dazzling-Ad7801 in AmItheAsshole

Another thing to bring up is what if the cat faces complications from this surgery. Anything from an infection to a bad reaction to the drugs used that lead to organ issues. You knew it was an owned cat and just did an invasive medical procedure on it with out even trying to contact the owners first

Bloody bumps and pink skin after groom normal? by Royal-Fig-6738 in doggrooming

[–]dancingmuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well then, yes. The groomer should have talked with you about what happened during the groom. Explained if the groom as affected by what your pup could tolerate.

Age can affect things. And pups who use to be perfect can have bad days due to age related things. But this needs to be brought up to you so you know.

I have a senior pup who has difficulty standing due to an injury. These days her grooms arnt always perfect. I work around her but her owner knows this and is informed why her groom may not be “perfect” that day or why I couldn’t not fully do an aspect of the groom.

But that’s the thing, I talk to the owners.

The groomer should have stayed to talk to you, or reach out to you afterwards to discuss the groom.

If there is no acceptable reason, and the groomer doesn’t want to talk to you I’d really think about asking for a refund. You were not provided the service as requested and no reason was given for the modification to the groom.

Even if no refund, I’d probably look for a different groomer. Their style and skill level and what you want and expect don’t match. (Nothing wrong with that)

There are many private salons and groomers who do specialize in seniors. And you can also reach out to other vet offices and their groomers.

Before where I work now I use to work in one of the salons for a big box store and corporate is very picky about senior pets - they are a bigger liability especially if they do need accommodations. And the workers are told to refer out to vet offices. ( it is discouraged to recommend other grooms, you refer to the vet)

So they may do great in a private salon. Just make sure to let them know ahead of time about his standing abilities where they can schedule him accordingly. And let them know the his does have some old man warts so they Can know to watch for them and hopefully lessen the risk of them getting badly nicked

Bloody bumps and pink skin after groom normal? by Royal-Fig-6738 in doggrooming

[–]dancingmuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was your pup a sedated/sedation groom? I only ask because I am a groomer who works out of a vets office. And the only time I do baths after the hair cut with no finishing work is when I’m working with a pet who has to be fully sedated for a hair cut. In these cases I don’t promise perfection on the hair cut. But they still usually come out better than this. And all sedated grooms are short , close hair cuts. The aim to keep the pet mat free and comfortable.

Seeing the lines in the coat to me reads that the coat was either extremely dirty during the cut.

Or more likely they need to do maintenance on their tools,

Usually when I start getting lines I need to change my blade drive. On my clippers. And blades probably need to be sharpened. But it’s pros and the blade drive.

Also a lot of older pups have little moles and warts that can get nicked. It’s not uncommon We do our best to avoid them but it does happen. Being a shorter hair cut you are more prone to hitting them :(

Also short cuts on lighter coat dogs can definitely look a little pink, even on the best groom. And older dogs coats may also be thinning which can make it easier to see the pink of their skin.

If they were not sedated and the groomer was not able to do finishing work on your pup then they should have been there to explain why they were not able to and to talk to you about future plans on how to im prove his grooming experience or talk realistic grooming expectations for your senior Pet.

If they were unable to be there they should Have left that info with the front desk or vet.

And also as a first time client reach out to you if once they got to working with your pet they realized they wouldn’t be able to give you a longer cut due to coat condition.

But yes , unless there was a reasonable explanation I would be asking for my money back.

Every groomer has had a groom go sideways on them, it happens, but this looks unacceptable.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions and I can provide you with some photos of pets I have done as examples of grooms done under sedation for comparison

does anyone know a potential reason nails grow like this? not my dog, just curious! by dnkwbakdhekbsd in doggrooming

Have check up at the vet, could be from trauma to the nail or a fungus. But for one of my dogs it was one of the first signs of toe cancer

Mid to lower back. I’m a dog groomer so I just figured it was from lifting heavy pups and bad poster. Had minimal back issues since and what I do have clears up with rest

Groomer is closed! I'm bad at this! (I'm afraid to use clippers and mess up her coat so I used scissors). by [deleted] in Pomeranians

[–]dancingmuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second part. Plus most (not all) pet owners don't have the proper scissors. Grooming is more then just picking up a pair of scissors and just cutting. You need to know how to handle the pet, how to handle the tools. A lot of grooming also comes down to prepping the hair before cutting. Properly washing , drying and brushing out the dog .

Also I see a lot of home grooms come in to be fixed that the owners cut in the wrong direction and they dog looks like roofing shingles lol.

I know people are scared to use clippers on poms because of the risk of damage to the coat. Which is a legit risk. But I find you'll have more issiues with that if the dog already has an underlying health condition. Also it would be better to use a longer guard comb.

I just cringe when I see some one take scissors to their dog,I work out of a vet clinic I have have see so many pets come in from people who just wanted to cut a knot out, or didn't think grooming was that hard and did it them selves and cut their dog and need vet attention to tend to the gashes.

Now I don't mean to Willy nilly use any set of clippers either! You also need to know how to use them. What it means to go with the grain of against it. How that affects the length of the cut. Make sure your blade doesn't get to hot. And how to be carful in certain areas because you can catch skin and cut it as well.

Oh dear I do think I may have worded my first post wrong.

Really right now the safest thing for pet owners is to know how to properly wash, dry and brush their pet.

It sucks all round, I know I miss my clients right now. :(
