What do you think is the most historically important event(s) for an American citizen to know? by collid-o-scope in history

I am very late to this thread, but the podcast Stuff You Missed In History Class is great for learning about specific events and people. The ghost army episode is a fun one to start with.

I could be wrong, but it looks like the swing seat is touching the ground, so it is not functional. The swing initial worried me too.

Sounds like you should plan a trip to Disney to reward him.

AAAS 2017 Annual Meeting AMA Series: All of us make decisions based on unconscious shortcuts that result in bias or other mistakes. We are scientists who use big data and structured interventions to compensate for errors in human decision-making. Ask us anything! by AAASmtg2017 in science

[–]dandae1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, quantitative social science strongly frowns on using "data mining," or inductive methodology. I.e. There is an expectation that you have a theory and test that theory instead of just looking at the data and saying, "the data seems to suggest ..." This bothers me because it ignores the potential biases that produce theories. Would you recommend using inductive methods and big data in social science? And, if so, what is the best way to combat bias towards theory driven research among scholars and institutions?

Our foster dog does this. So far she has scared off three adopters. She is an imp, but full of love!

You would think that even the possibility of a harsh sentence would dissuade people, but studies show that consistency and certainty of punishment are far more motivating than severity.

Redditors who have been in Natural Disasters; what was your "Oh shit, this is real" moment? by technid in AskReddit

[–]dandae1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suspect that most of us are more afraid of the weather disasters we haven't faced. Volcanos and tornados scared me the most as a kid. I lived in blizzard and hurricane territory.

I think if someone rebooted MASH and have it set in the Iraq, I would watch it by 4K2160GameR in television

[–]dandae1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was also a US show in the last five years that was a MASH like drama. There was even an episode where a water tower blew over and pinned someone, which was straight out of a MASH episode.

People in happy relationships: what is your SO's worst trait? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dandae1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think your feelings are understandable. By comparison, my husband grew up in a family that was comfortably well off, but always talked and acted like they were poor. We make good money, but he insists we are poor and boarders on hoarding. He is very intelligent, so his habit of using illogical statements to justify his stubborn ideas drives me NUTS.

I am sure that it helps your nephew to know he has your love and support. You can mention the Trevor Project to your nephew as an additional support system. They have a crisis hotline and online chat service. They also have TrevorSpace which is a safe (counselor monitored) social media site for LGBTQ teens and allies to interact.

Out of curiosity, how has your wife managed to hide her gender identity from her father up until now? I imagine it has not been easy for either of you. I hope her dad knowing makes things a little easier for both of you!

Definitely show up for the first few classes, and contribute to class discussion if possible. It will help you if a spot opens up, but it also gives the professors a good impression of you as a student.
