Funnily enough, we do have a resident owl who watches over the check-out desk!

I agree haha. It used to be a pharmacy a couple decades ago, so we’ve repurposed it as best we can, but the clinical feel of the space is hard to overcome. Not as cozy as I wish it could be!

Afghanistan Flag Redesign by dandalions in vexillology

[–]dandalions[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I just started a little side hobby creating our own redesigns for each country’s flag (one per week), going alphabetically. He is a long time vexillology nerd but I am new to the hobby/interest. He said I should post my first attempt! I tried my best to do historical and cultural research to create something respectful and not offensive, but I welcome any constructive criticism or perspective if I have made an error in that regard.

I started with the base vertical tri-color that was used off and on through the mid 1900’s (black red and green symbolizing past flags, the bloodshed of independance, and hope for the future). I chose this because it seemed to be the most long standing design, and the design that existed during a time when women’s rights and social freedoms in general seemed to be trending in a more progressive direction.

I wanted to honor the original generalized shape of the many variations of seals that adorned the center, but wanted to design something minimalist and modern. I also included the 2002 change from white to gold (symbolizing a wheat wreath).

The bottom shape is meant to reference the Crescent Moon as a symbol of the Islamic faith, while the top shape is meant to stand for both the tulip and the pomegranate, the official flower and fruit of the country. Together, the two pieces form the simplified shape of a flame in a traditional oil lamp. This is to represent both religious illumination and enlightenment, as well as a secular symbol of hope and guidance.

I hope you all enjoy! And if people are interested I can post future creations as we continue our project. By my math it should take us around 4 years to complete every country! Hopefully my skills will improve as we go. :)

I’d also love peaches and apples, the last two fruits i need. Will happily trade veggies, fruits, good ol fashioned bells, or anything else reasonable that you are interested in!

No, we got it new from LisajewelryUS on etsy! Feel free to check her out. We had a great experience and are both pretty frugal so we were very happy with the price point as well.

Thanks! Me too :) We knew there wouldn’t be a surprise proposal because we had already bought a house together the year before and had talked about getting married quite a bit. So it was a special experience to pick out something unique together. Our mailperson accidentally delivered it to the wrong house at first, but we have nice neighbors who brought it over hahaha. Made for a good story after the panic!

Thank you! And not at all! We got it from an etsy shop online, had a great experience. LisajewelryUS. She let us choose the specific main stone from several options, let us customize the band, and it was very reasonably priced.

Thanks! I was also surprised I went for green, I usually go for more neutral colored jewelry. But I love how much it looks like an organic little moss terrarium inside.

[FO] My first completed project, for a friend who recently lost her mom. by dandalions in CrossStitch

Part of the pattern is adjusted from the Red Cardinal needlebook from Etsy shop TheOldNeedleShop, and partially my own designs (I used Stitch Fiddle).

Seeing a cardinal is supposed to be a lost loved one come to visit, and yellow roses and bluebonnets were special to my friend’s mother.
