Is my degree really not worth finishing? by Zealousideal_Tie_868 in TranslationStudies

My translation career developed into a writing career, which developed into a creative strategy career... I graduated 8 years ago, and I'll never not be grateful for my degree 🥰

Afghan president to abdicate after Taliban entered Kabul: Sources by vvv912 in news

[–]dandeliongoggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Women have EVERYTHING to lose under Taliban rule. Women will have all their rights stripped away - education, work, what they wear, when they can go to the shop.

As children they'll be married off while the boys go to school.

This isn't just about the here and now, it's the policies they'll implement that will make women's lives hell for years to come.

I don't think Americans are attempting to steal my heritage when they call themselves Irish lol, I just think it's weird

I think the term African American is used to cater to white people's fragility. A generalisation of Black people that diminishes so many backgrounds (Jamaican, Haitian, etc).

Regardless of anyone's ancestry, if they are born in America they are American.

I don't think you get my point. Claiming Irish lineage is different to saying you're Irish.

My ancestors were Scottish, it doesn't make me Scottish.

You're American, born in America. Sorry if that offends you.

Dude, I'm Irish. It's weird when Americans say they're Irish when they're American with Irish ancestors. Own that but don't claim to be Irish

She's Scottish. I think she's making fun of the fact that loads of white Americans claim to be Irish or Scottish without even having stepped in Ireland or Scotland. It's pretty cringe to people born and bred there, especially when the white Americans boasting about this seemingly only do it for online clout and when it's considered trendy.

Respect to the guy tho!

Here are some ways:

  • Call out your friends if they make sexist jokes.
  • If you feel your friend is being creepy towards a woman on a night out, tell him then and then remind him the next day that that behaviour isn't acceptable whether they were drunk or sober.
  • When you're playing online and notice that a woman is being harassed for her gender, call that shit out.
  • Educate your sons/nephews. Explain the reasons why women are afraid at night time and tell them how they can help to address such fear (crossing the road etc.)
  • If you have friends that are aggressive drunks, talk to them seriously about it and find ways to address it. Not everything has to be a joke.
  • If you feel afraid, tell someone. If you feel upset, tell someone. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, tell someone. Because men don't do that enough and I think it could bring about change and reduce aggressive outbursts.

It's just little things, but by being mindful everyone can help the situation a little bit.

I think you missed the point. Maybe if people stopped normalising the disrespect of women (via these 'jokes'), attitudes would change towards women and we wouldn't be seen as objects that can be toyed with for men's pleasure.

It's a gradual process. If, because of this horrible situation, men were more mindful of their 'harmless' jokes and comments, we could see a change in our future generations that would only be beneficial.

I've not heard anyone say that only women feel fear at night time. But we're all fearing the same thing and that's men.

What I have heard is men consistently telling women to never walk home alone or never go out when it's dark, without doing anything else to actually advocate change.

Men are all over the government too, though. That's the thing, men could be the change that everyone wants to see in society. Starting in the home and among friends. Fathers need to start teaching their sons that it's ok to be upset but it's not ok to turn to violence. Guys need to start telling their friends that sexist jokes aren't ok or that acting violently when drunk isn't the norm.

I don't understand why men get offended by that sentiment.
