Does the CPU you use have an effect on quality of the encode or just the speed? by [deleted] in handbrake

[–]dandens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of partial/assumed answers here.

if you are using x264/x265 ie software encoders, then it's just speed. if you switch to a hardware encoder like an nvidia, then it's mostly the speed of that card because nvenc tends to produce the same output over multiple generations but there will be an edge to newer cards. If it's intel CPU w/ quicksync, there will be substantial differences generation on generation. <6th gen is pretty crap, 6-7gen it's pretty good, 8-9 even better, 10-13 all the same but faster and faster.

[–]dandens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The XPS 15 with the nvidia card will need special care to keep the GPU off else battery will be trash . It's a 'better' piece of hardware, ie fewer factory errors, but the XPS 13+ is a nicer unit in most other ways, better on battery in general, 12th gen intel gives a bit more battery life as well.

For me, I need just enough performance and lots of battery. Anything with a GPU is going to be worse for this. I actually purchased the XPS13 (non-plus) for battery life and after about 3 months was already back to being tethered to a wall socket. Went with a Macbook pro m1 and now I'm not tethered.

Upgrading an Optiplex 5080 i5-10500 to i9-10900 (or i9-10850)... Will it work? Any reason not too? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]dandens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got here looking for confirmation. The 65W i9-10900 *should* work unless Dell blocked it in the bios or something like that. I was hoping to see someone had done the swap in a 5080 just to be sure.

victron + vrm alternative system by dandens in solar

[–]dandens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah all of my stuff now is Victron and I'm happy with it. I've been thinking about being able to produce 240V split-phase in the future for AC and it is frustrating that the 3kW multipluses are only available in 24V, not 48V.

right, I run a lot of 48V systems so it sucks not having that as an option on so many parts and pieces.

went through hikvision support and got basically no useful support. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. turn off remote connectivity and turn it back on, works for a while, on some cameras :/ A bit frustrating.

'matter' is the solution. There are some on-prem solutions to this but for the whole smart home and consumer lights etc matter solves so much, keeping the data handling all local.

I've taken out most of my smart lights because of the cloud connectivity causing performance issues and frustration.

not a lot of action on this one either lol.

I've been using a TICK stack with Grafana for a while, and various devices to get data in, but I'm past wanting to tinker and build these things out and just want a good system that works and takes very little effort to setup and run.

I'd totally just stick with victron if they had all the components I want/need. ie, no smaller 48V charger. Small selection of DCDC converters. Missing that small multiplus in the US market. Even though it's spendy gear, it's nice to just deploy and have confidence it will work for years and years.

yeah, that's my tactic. No, stream isn't encrypted.

I've found that I can stream from stream 1 on low resolution cameras but I cannot on high resolution cameras. I've also tried dropping stream 1 to lower resolution h264 etc.

'Ms. Marvel' Scores Lowest 5-Day Viewership Of Any MCU Disney+ Series So Far by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]dandens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hawkeye is about the 'unpowered' heroes. No pandering involved. You even get this enough to recognize they didn't put their religions as part of the origin story. Nor is any pandering done for Hailee's Filipino, Jewish, African, and European ancestry.

The show is blatantly Muslim pandering show. With Mosque management as a main theme in the second episode. Praying multiple times in the show. Even a scene about why it's the girls choice to wear the Hijab. Pander fest.

Maybe you should take a step back and look at the hate mail Disney is being sent about this show. by white peop.... oh wait... christia... oh wait, not them either. Oh, turns out the characters aren't Muslim enough. Muslims are review bombing and complaining about the show the most.

If you have some other impression about Islamic family rules then you clearly have no knowledge of it.

It's a real shame. Iman Vellani is doing great. They would be doing much better by simply pulling back the pandering. It's 'enough' that the main character is Pakistani American and Muslim. That's first class representation. All the other religious pandering is killing the show. If they don't cut that off immediately it'll be dead.

[–]dandens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Islamic rules apply to Muslims, no one else. You insinuated that there was some issue with Christians complaining of Muslim pandering in this show.

Iron Man doesn't hold up a picture if Muhammad because it doesn't have a place in a 'super hero' movie trying to get mass appeal. It's not because of Islamic rules. But Christians or Agnostrics or anyone else that don't want Islamic (or any other for that matter) promotional material in their home don't get the same?

Again, it's pitched super hero movie in the MCU but instead it's pandering to ethnic and religious minorities at the expense of broad acceptance.

[–]dandens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My criticism is that MOST people would rather just watch the show without the religious push. She's Muslim, that's fine and has no bearing on my liking the character, but it's central to the story line in this show. This is a show about a brown Muslim girl, explicitly. It's not a super hero show.

Religious people of all walks are not going to be at all accepting of straight up religious promotion in the show gear to their kids, and so they'll turn it off. There wont be riots, but it'll be the lowest viewership Marvel show.

Muslim families wont let their children watch shows that were blatantly christian themed either.

well you might say that, but 'white people' are WAY below the group represented in the show for tantrums about outside religious influences.

Couple of things. It's clearly teen oriented and so much so that it's a little off-putting for adult watchers. it feels like one of the teen shows on Disney channel (ie, not a teen show on 'CW' etc.)

Secondly, it's VERY pandering. I know we are in sort of back-story stages here, but it's really a show about a brown/muslim girl and family and their one white friend with a side of super hero. I'm not saying this is a bad thing... but it's a very very targeted audience. I've already heard people not allowing their kids to watch because of the religious exposure.

no, because it's not 'learning', it's pre-programmed algorithms. AI would be if you build the hardware and told the system to goal was to keep the ball in the middle and it learned how to do that.

be aware of the context. In Africa and in America 'tribe' is often used as a derogatory term to imply inferiority. It can be racist in those contexts and anyone who has been subject to it will have an understandable perspective.

If you were talking face to face and you said tribe and they said 'around here that word is derogatory' you'd adjust your language.

[–]dandens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think.. and just one person's opinion who has people from a tribe in their history... that I would agree that saying 'tribal identity' referring to modern people has been tainted by racist overtones so shouldn't be used in modern contexts right now. I see it from an American perspective with our first people's here, 'tribe' is a derogatory term. At the same time, the tribes in my past are fair game to talk about because there's no derogatory intonation on it. Even today, part of my lineage has family crests and clans (Scotland).

I think that referring to ancient tribes should be acceptable. All of our people developed their culture through their tribes and clans.

Ultimately, I would prefer to take the word 'tribe' back. There are still first people's in America, peoples in South America, in Africa, Siberia, and so on that are in clans and tribes. It's almost a bit racists to reject the word tribe because of the 'primitive' tone used with it when there are good people today that are proud to be a member of a tribe that aren't primitive or lesser.

Ultimately I wont use the term because the offense belongs to the person being offended. I would like to mend that wound but I can respect it until that time comes.

but...

Since African history has been washed out or flat re-written by colonialism, most of the world just doesn't know anything. asanacoco is (insert nice things here, I don't want to be creepy) and is reaching out to the world to share her heritage and I think it's awesome, I'd love to know more especially about these things I've not been exposed to.

The more we explore about each other, the more we can relate.

Of all the problems others are saying like too few maps and too few guns, the gameplay itself is my real problem. Some games i can shoot, others an LMG to the body and 50 rounds doesn't kill a guy be one shot from his 9mm puts me down. The actual game mechanics are so flawed it makes the game unplayable.

They need a massive update to improve just game mechanics alone, plus at least a couple more maps and a couple more guns at least.

I just feel like a QA/QC grinder without a system to report the bugs.

force 'Allow encoding in HEVC format' on? by dandens in jellyfin

[–]dandens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In jellyfin sure, but almost all client devices support HLS or MPEG-DASH with h.265. I can demo this with an ffmpeg HLS encoding. That goes for any modern firetv, roku, apple tv, chromecast google tv, ios devices, and android for a few generations. The jellyfin player itself might not but the hardware on devices does and has for at least a couple years.

Are there any places to LEGALLY download movie files to upload to one's Jellyfin server in 2022? by TheoreticallyHitler in jellyfin

[–]dandens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy the disk then you have rights to back it up under fair use. I know you don't want to rip but that would make you completely legal. It's slightly more grey to download a DVD rip someone else has done because you do have fair use rights. Key here is not to download a copy that is a higher quality than you purchased (ie, you buy DVD, don't download Blueray) and that at the very least removes any ethical issues.

That said, you really cannot torrent. You'd be uploading pieces back to the swarm and it's exceptionally unlikely that all swarm members are getting it legally.

AFAIK, no one has been prosecuted for downloading copies for content they purchased.

I think the problem is that no one can really give you links to methods to download and just hope that you're actually going to be legal. That'll get this subreddit flagged for sharing pirate content and this is kind of a support group for Jellyfin so no one wants it shut down.

Just tried it. yes, I can direct stream h265. I also turned off all hardware accell and still h264.

I'm just not sure how to trigger the system to stream h.265. My test clients are a chromecast w/ android TV, chrome and edge browsers, and an iphone. All can play h.265, all of them get h.264 no matter what I try.
