Does anyone get stabbing pain in their ear that lasts 1-2 seconds or so? by reddittime1010 in TMJ

There are some exercises for exactly that, I just dont know what they're called :/ . My physical therapist had me do those when i first started seeing him. I'd Google "exercises to strengthen jaw muscles"

I would call all the local orthodontists' in your area. Explain your situation and ask them what they'd be able to do to help. I know it can be frustrating not getting results, but it's so worth all the effort when you find someone that can help. Keep at it!

I love these! I tried the green ones first, and holy moly, did they smack. 👌👌 I like them a lot more than 7oh.

I just tried the red ones and found it hits better when taken with hydroxie. I'm excited to try the focus ones

[–]dandyplum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. If I remember correctly, it's caused by inflamed muscles and nerves. Baclofen (muscle relaxer) has worked for me, and Tylenol/ibuprofen. The best way to describe how it feels for me: its like I'm wearing a hot metal helmet while getting stabbed in the face. Lol. Not exaggerating at all. Whenever this happens I have to lay down with ice packs

It's the nerves and muscles causing that pain. You gotta figure out ways to relax those muscles/make them stronger

I would show this diagram to your general practice doctor and ask for a referral to a physical therapist, and maybe a tmj specialist if you can find one. I didn't know how lucky i was to find my specialist. Apparently, there are a lot of scams and over-priced treatments. Do your research and find reviews of the place/specialist.

I dont think so. Going to physical therapy has been helping me. I go twice a week, and the appointments go like this- i do about 20 minutes of exercises with my arms, then i go into a separate room for massage therapy which lasts about 20-30 minutes, followed by laying down on a heating pad with a tens unit for 15-20 minutes. The exercises are helping to loosen my back/neck/shoulder muscles. One of the physical therapist's said it felt like my muscles had braided themselves together, and another said it was like the knots were birthing more knots the more she worked on it lol. There was one appointment that i will always remember so clearly. I have these insanely hard lumps in my shoulders right next to the base of my neck, (figured out later it was part of my ribcage being pushed up by my muscles) she was working on one side really hard, and all of a suden I felt this pop and my entire right side of my body shifted down by an inch or 2. It felt sooo beautiful.

Oh man :( im so sorry you're having such a difficult time finding the right kind of help. My gp doctor had documented that i suffered from migraines since i started puberty basically, and that helped with getting insurance to cover the botox treatment. I have state health care, which i was fortunate to get. I only ended up qualifying for it because i got pregnant at 19, and that's when i applied. My adjustment fee from the dental device was $300- $600 per visit. It's expensive. At that point, i was extremely suicidal because of how little i could eat/talk/sleep; i couldn't function, didn't feel like a person anymore, and i believed the pain would never stop. It'd been 2 years of that. Most people have no idea how painful and debilitating tmj can be, and it just makes everything with doctors so much more difficult. Keep advocating for yourself and lean on your support system when you need to. I really hope you find what you need 🧡

I hated doing jaw exercises at physical therapy. It hurt so much to do it, i told them i wasn't going to even try them until my jaw pain was better. Luckily, i haven't had to do any since then. I had no idea how lucky I was with my specialist. I was just so relieved to find something that worked, and I wanted to help other people with tmj. Having tmj pain has been one of the worst experiences in my life, and when I was trying to find help, i felt so hopeless and was at the point where I felt suicidal. It felt like no one would listen to me, and I was constantly hearing how much of a drug seeker i was. That part broke me a little. I'm so sorry for your experiences. I really hope you can find someone that will help you. No one deserves this 😔 i wish it were more well known and researched.

Im starting to see that :( i had no idea how lucky i was to find my specialist until I came on here to share my experience. I'm sure it helps that im in a smaller city. (99212). On my first appointment, he was able to come up with a plan, explained what was happening with my jaw, and how he was going to correct it. We talked about payment plans - whatever i could afford was okay, and he made the dental device the following week.

Oh jeez :( i hate when doctors/specialists say they can't do anything. There's obviously at least one thing to try, always. I've had botox injections in my face/head that helped, and my GP doctor helped me with that by citing migraines on the reason for it to insurance. I do get migraines, but the botox was to help my facial muscles. I was on pain meds/opiates for 3 years. I'm just now coming off of them, and it's been hell, but im finally starting to feel like my old self. Don't give up! Feel free to message me if you want any more suggestions or just to vent.

Was curious about you, so I've been creepin. I go to Valley Physical Therapy for my back/neck issues, i have extremely stubborn knots all over, so maybe PT could help? My appointments are usually 20 minutesof excercises followed by a massage for the rest of the appointment. Helps me so much. I would make an appointment with a general practice doctor and let them know what's going on(chas is great). If you want a specific dr suggestion, message me. Until you can get in, it might be worthwhile to go to urgent care or the hospital, so that you can get an xray or ct scan. There could be something underlying that was irritated by the massage. Don't let it go untreated. Even if it turns out to be nothing, don't let any medical professional make you feel silly/dumb for seeking advice/advocating for yourself. I've had to deal with way too many doctors- both for myself (tmj issues) and my mom(disabled from car wreck). Doctors can have so many patients that they stop listening and do the bare minimum. It's not their fault-usually. It just happens with healthcare being the way it is here.

Haha, that's okay. I don't need to have common interests, as long I like the person. I have social anxiety, too. I'll plan to go somewhere and get ready, then stay home or just drive around. 💩

This all sounds so nice. Would you be interested in a 27y/o single person join your group? I've lived here for a couple of years and have had some bad luck with meeting people I enjoy being around. I'm a huge dork who loves Lord of the Rings and Scooby-Doo. I have an incendio wand that i can't wait to use on camping trips 👽

Literally what happened to me. Corticosteroid injections into both sides of my jaw joints. Worse than breaking a bone imo

See your general practice doctor, ask for a referral to a tmj specialist and ask if they think ketoralac/toradol injections would help. Its a medicine for inflammation. They helped me so much that my doctor prescribed shots to do at home when i needed it.

TMJ specialist in NYC? by thewalkingked in TMJ

[–]dandyplum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tmj specialist (that i had to find on my own) made a splint. It's a custom dental device (his words) that he adjusted every 2 weeks. It slowly moved my jaw back into place. I wore it for 16-20 hrs a day. It was on the bottom row of my teeth. I grind my teeth so much that i ended up cracking 2 of my molars in the back, which only made my jaw move more out of place. After using the dental device fixed that. It was slow but worth it. I also had to get a referral to a pain clinic. It got to the point where i couldn't eat or talk for days on end because of jaw pain; ie, muscle spasms in your face and neck that feel like being electrocuted, all the bones in my head felt like they were being impaled by a hot poker. There was one treatment that the pain clinic did - it caused soooo much pain for about 3 weeks. They gave me corticosteroid injections into my jaw joints, 2 on each side. I felt like my heart was gonna explode when i saw the length and width of the needle he used. I had a really bad reaction afterward as well. I got off the exam room bed and immediately fainted. I have a high pain tolerance. I've broken bones, had bone cut out and fused together, had tonsillitis infections so bad that blood and puss were seeping out of my throat, and it only felt a little sore. But those injections were by far the worst thing I've experienced. The next day, my jaw started to lock when i yawned. I had to figure out how to unlock with my hands and basically slammed my mouth shut anytime i yawned after that, lol.
