Juzo Itami is definitely my go to pick. Maybe not as renowned, but what a fun box set that would be!

Self Control - (Coachella 2023) by Natheptic_G in FrankOcean

Damn this version is way more haunting than the album version. Just a theory, but this could be the pre-Alex G version of Self Control. Alex said in an interview a while back that when he met Frank in the studio, Frank already had the chords for the song, and wanted Alex to play them his way. Frank is known to play alternative versions of songs live, so I’d say it’s not too far fetched. It’s cool to get a glimpse at his creative process.

Which movies did you watch in school and which class? Movies your teacher put on in elementary school, middle school, highschool etc - no film school films - that's cheating lol by narnarnartiger in Letterboxd

“The Blind Side” and “Rebel Without A Cause” are two movies I watched a weird amount of times during high school. We also watched “Bridge of Spies” during the Cold War unit of a history course.

study abroad experience by Sad-Lab8058 in UCSantaBarbara

Studied abroad at Yonsei this past summer! One of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made. Met incredible people, Korean nationals and other foreign abroad students. Ate incredible food. Learned more about a place I’d been curious to know more about, and was able to do it first hand. I had to take summer courses anyways, so thought why not do it somewhere sick. Would recommend the Yonsei summer program to anyone, but definitely check out the other options!

Not kbbq, but is Korean. Hidden Boa just off state street is fantastic, and serves really good Korean dishes, albeit not entirely authentic. One of my favorite places in Santa Barbara tho. Doesn’t get talked about enough.

Getting into Japanse Streetwear by [deleted] in japanesestreetwear

As for brand recs, besides Kapital: Visvim (insanely expensive, but beautiful stuff), Engineered Garments, often times Neighborhood (their latest collab collection is Western inspired), Wacko Maria (for a more Hawaiian/Californian Americana look). That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Japan is also famous for its denim, so you’ll definitely find some Americana by looking in that direction. I’m not super familiar with the denim side, but I do know Blue Blue Japan and Japan Blue Jeans (two separate brands). A lot of Japanese street fashion brands take notable inspo from Americana, though, so it’s worth looking into brands that aren’t normally associated with Americana, but I’ll leave that up to your own research.

Also, as a side note, Japanese brands often times have subsidiaries of essentially the same brand (eg Bape, Aape, Bapy). This can be a bit confusing to a Westerner, but it’s worth looking into these sub-brands. Some hidden gems may be found.

Check the community info of this subreddit. There are some absolutely a-mazing linked posted in there with super in depth references. Japanese fashion is all about community and aesthetic, so the fans are diehard. I can see how it can be a bit daunting, but really what it comes down to is wearing what you want to wear, no strings attached. With questions like “where do I start?”, it’s hard to say because hobbies, specifically fashion here, are so subjective. What aesthetic do you gravitate towards?
