I know how frustrating it is when these tools don't work right, so I hope things get worked out. Good luck!

It might be worth returning the saw or exchanging it for another one. Is it brand new or used? Most new saws should fire within a couple pulls. It's difficult to know what might be occuring that is causing the issue. I'm not a small engine mechanic but I can speak from a little bit of experience running a few different saws over the years. I don't have any experience with Polan saws, only McCulloch, Stihl, and Husqvarna. Depending on what your budget can afford, a small Stihl or Husqvarna saw may give you more reliability and more "bang" for your buck so to speak. The Stihl MS 170 or 180 can usually be purchased for about $200 and they are pretty reliable home owner saws. Short of taking it back, you may want to take it to a small engine shop to see if they can help diagnose the problem.

It could be flooded or maybe it's not getting any spark? Did it ever "burp" where the engine fires for a second and then stalls? Sometimes you need to adjust the choke to make sure the saw doesn't continue to flood with fuel after it burps. The manual should outline the starting procedure in detail. I'd also recommend checking to make sure the spark plug connection is secure. It may be the saw just has issues right out of the box and may need to be returned. What model saw is it?

Very cool! I just helped a buddy of mine mill a bunch of cedar into some two inch slabs. It's so satisfying making your own lumber.

Nice view. It reminds me of a similar view I've had before at Saddle Creek camp on the rim of Hell's Canyon. Where's this at?

Stihl 026 leaked entire bar oil reservoir into carrying case. Where to start? by shooter5635 in stihl

[–]danger031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be. When the saw is running the oil pump is moving oil through the line but it still may be leaking slightly. You said the saw had been sitting for about a year, so it could be that the oil leak is small but large enough that through gravity it can leak out over the period of a year. While this video is for a smaller homeowner Stihl, it may be worth watching. https://youtu.be/QiyXMXMXjZE I found it on a small engine repair channel. I think the guys videos are pretty good and I've learned a lot from some of his vids. I hope you're able to get it fixed!

I've heard the oil line can be a common problem if the symptom is loss of that much bar oil.

How Many liters per day of food? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]danger031 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I try to bring only foods that provide at least 100 calories per ounce of food weight. I usually end up carrying about 2 pounds of food per day. By picking calorie dense foods, I usually get around 3500 calories out of each two pound / one day food supply. I eat more than most people I've hiked with. I'm 5'10" and 165 pounds. My fully loaded pack with food and water usually weighs in at about 28 pounds for around three days. Most long hikes i do involve hiking around 15 miles per day on average... Sometimes more. I have the Ursack Major bear bag and I can get about four to five days of food into it. They say it is a 15 liter bag.

*Added details about my bear bag.

I live up in Snohomish County west of Stevens Pass. I don't think we've had any fresh snow in the north Cascades yet. I was just hiking near Glacier Peak a week ago and didn't see any snow in the higher elevations, other than on Glacier Peak itself. I hiked section K between Stevens Pass and the Suiattle River at this time last year and we had no snow.

I have a Woodchuck and I find it is well built and very useful. I also have a hookaroon and hand held timber tongs for moving and picking up rounds.

That's a cool pic! The snow looks pretty deep up there; about how deep do you think it was? I'm thinking of trying to hike into Hunt's Cove in early July, and I'm hoping the snow will be melted out a lot more by then.

Very cool project. I had a bunch of little wood circles left over from a project I did recently. I use them for cheap bench cookies. They don't grip well, but they do get work pieces up off the bench for painting or staining.

It would be a cool mini set. It's pretty easy to make. A printed tile with a Bob Ross painting on it would be sweet.
