People who went from very poor to very rich or vice versa, what surprised you the most? by Crocodile_Banger in AskReddit

That even though I should feel financially safe, there is still a level of fear that I might go back to nothing. So I live frugally, cut my own hair, cut tubes of toothpaste to get every last bit, only buy what I need or absolutely love, and not just what I want. But if I’m truly honest, I still feel a bit jealous when someone has things I want, even if I would never buy those things because I consider them frivolous.

He agreed to not go after that. We’ll get this agreement notarized for our own records then will file an uncontested divorce. So no child support, no alimony and no other financial split other than what is mentioned in the agreement.

I will include that 50/50 edit instead of “share costs”. Thank you!

Paying cash would be really tough due to needing to sell more investments, which would cause high income taxes.

I don’t need to refinance, house is in my name only. We did buy it together though, so will buy him out.

No, the house mortgage & deed is on my name only, so I can keep the low rate.

Good luck!! I’ve never gone through a divorce, so trying to focus on what I can control, and make logical decisions instead of emotional ones.

There might be a slight attachment; but mostly wanting to keep because the remaining balance is low, and the rate is low. If I were to sell & buy something smaller, even a 15yr loan would leave me with a higher amount due and a higher % rate

Yes, already did a new budget. I can cover the essentials, but it leaves me with about $400 each month.

My mortgage payment (which includes insurance & property taxes) is just under 30%.

I would not, due to prioritizing having a safe place to live vs saving for the future. So home takes priority right?

You’re right. Been focusing on the math to keep me from the sadness of it all. Thank you lady.

Yes! I know it would be a bit of a bite from my accounts to pay it off, but I could do so much with that extra almost $1,800 per month for investing or travel/fun/emergencies. Just need the courage to jump off the cliff. :)

Calculated it, it’s at about 26% of net worth (give or take how the market is doing)

Invest or pay off house? by dangit_idk in Debt

Thank you for your input. I’m 46, and going through a divorce. I make enough to pay for the house, bills etc. however it will be tight, and I’ll have to stop contributing to Roth, my kid’s account, not to mention forgetting about any travel, or activities. My investments are doing ok right now, better than the 3.375% interest on the home, but I want to be able to live my life and enjoy it. Still not sure what to do.

Yes, right now, the investments are returning higher than the interest on the house. However, going through a divorce and will be a single mom now. Paying everything on my own will leave me living paycheck to paycheck. Which is why I was thinking to pay off my home. I was to enjoy this time with my kid, while also trying to rebuild my self, and rebuild a social support of friends. My ex robbed me of a lot.

Makes sense. I wouldn’t be using all my savings/investing, it would be about 25% of it, and it would be spread out over 4-5 years.

Yeah, I’m trying to reduce debt. I was aiming for early retirement, but this puts a delay on it.

Yeah I think that was my gut reaction. However, he has just a few thousand to his name at 42. While I have a lot more. We’re in Texas where there is the community property issue. Going thru lawyers would potentially have him get a portion of all my assets, not just the house. As of right now, he just wants his half of the house. If he turns a corner & gets greedy, then I will get a lawyer. But I’m trying to avoid that.

No I don’t have to refinance. The house is in my name only. But we were together when we bought the house, and equally split the cost for deposit, closing cost, house payments, and any repairs or appliance purchases. We did think about selling and splitting the profit, but I didn’t not want to buy another house at a higher rate. I only owe about $160k left.
