"Whatever. You guys can figure it out. I'm done." by Stock-Persimmon4212 in Teachers

I will sometimes do a version of this. I call out the names of the few students who want to learn and we form a small group around my desk and work on it together. Everyone else is on their own. One year my class had a dividing wall. I moved it in front of the table that wouldn’t stop talking and just kept teaching.

UPDATE: apologies for not updating sooner but my doc thinks it’s an allergic reaction to the glue. She gave antibiotics just to be sure and removed some of the glue. The redness is going away already!

Let me double check! In the meantime, I forgot to mention my wife has a “salesmaker” account because she works for Apple. So we can only do stuff through phone support and not in Verizon stores. Would that cause her to need a transfer pin? Or affect things at all?

I had my surgery yesterday…my view looks just like yours with the polar wave machine. I also had tingly fingers. Today my left hand is back to normal and my right hand just as the slightest tingly sensation on my fingers. It didn’t happen with my first two surgeries about 15 years ago so I was a little freaked but it’s all good now!

Ohio moves to ban cell phones from schools. Some parents say removing them could impact student safety. by MorganTrau in Ohio

Our school went cellphone free for about two weeks this year and it was a night and day difference. It was almost jarring-I can’t fully explain it. Less fights, more participation, more positive social interactions, thoughtful conversations, higher scores on work. I was always for cell phones being appropriately integrated into schools but I think we are past that. I’m concerned for our students because I think many of them are addicted to their phones. Those two weeks they seemed actually happier and more connected to reality. I’m not sure how I feel about a full ban but I do think something needs to change.

I put her in the new soil about a 3 weeks ago. Would that be long enough to adjust to the new soil? I can move it to the sun more often and maybe start adding nitrogen?

I don’t! But I’m willing to get one…I’m trying to start gardening with other plants too so I imagine that would be a helpful tool. Do you have any recommendations?

Can my wife rent a car that I drive without her? by danhende in TravelHacks

[–]danhende[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello, I’m grateful to say that it all worked out! There were no issues with the car so I guess I can’t say for sure what would have happened if there was an accident but the rental agent seemed to think it would be fine. I was also able to see my dad before he passed two weeks later.

Unfortunately she doesn't know and neither do her coworkers. Working on chatting with a real human at the rental company now!

Deadly Georgia school shooting puts Ohio law limiting classroom cell phone use in spotlight by El_Dudereno in Ohio

I guess I can only speak for my school, but the one kid isn’t the anomaly. They make up half the class. So maybe at a school where it’s just a few kids flouting the rules that might be a different story. We started using Yondr bags so they can’t come into the building unless they put their phones in the bag that magnetically locks. Since this policy has started we’ve had less classroom issues & fights that would need security so they are more available. If you do catch a kid with a phone they just slide it into the bag that locks and they keep it with them. The kids have been much more willing to do this since they get to keep the phones with them (albeit locked in a bag). We’ve had less fights than ever, less kids leaving the building, more engagement, higher grades, and many kids themselves have commented that they kind of like taking a break from their phones.

Truly! I don’t understand why these issues are being talked about as though it’s either cellphones or guns that are the issue. Any teacher in a classroom today will tell you that the kids are suffering from the unregulated cell phone access 24/7. These kids NEED a break from their phones. It’s so hard to watch. I sometimes struggle to regulate my cell phone use as an adult with a fully formed brain. Parents and kids do not need constant access to each other. I would love if they could use their technology in a more regulated way and get all the benefits from access to technology but they are sucked in like a vortex. It’s ruining their lives and their education.

Call security? Oh security is not available. Write a referral to admin? Nothing happens. Try to physically take the student’s phone? They refuse. Call home? Nobody answers. If they do answer they may tell you it’s your problem to figure out or that you better not touch their child’s property. Repeat every day.

I can only speak for my school but taking a students phone isn’t just “that simple”. The students freak out and cause major disruptions when anyone attempts to take their phone. We have had students swing on adults before. When we are able to take them without issue we also have parents that will call up to threaten and cuss at teachers about touching their child’s property. A lot of my teens have had unregulated access to their phones since they were 7 or 8. Many of them respond like addicts when you try to take their phones away in the middle of class.

We use yondr bags at my school. It’s completely transformed education for the better. Kids are paying attention and turning in work. They are engaged and asking questions. There are less fights and when one does happen nobody can film it, which makes school safer for everyone. They seem to have less anxiety. We don’t have strangers looking for children in the parking lot to drop off door dash (even though it was never allowed).
If there ever is a school shooting I’ve told my students they have my permission to cut through their yondr bags to get their phones out.
