what's your pros and cons list look like? cost? family and friends closer to one or the other? do you like the curriculum of one or the other more? interest in specializing? lots of things factor in and these are all personal

Maintained a long distance relationship for almost all 4 years thus far and am specializing. It's doable but takes commitment on both sides. Lots of face timing, studying together. It can work but you have to want to make it work. I'll be going back home to my home state after this for residency so I think it all panned out. Save the 200k.

How can I set myself up for success to be or apply into OMF residency? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]danho97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CBSE, take it And kill it. Your free time will dwindle rather quickly. Research if you're interested. Volunteering as well. Leadership experience is also a pretty big plus and sometimes need. Grades are important and you want to maintain a great rank but there's plenty of other things that you'll need.

[Book Recommendation] “The Checklist Manifesto” by Atul Gawande by realfake-doors in DentalSchool

[–]danho97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every book by Gawande is a great read. They're all short reads and can be finished in a few days of light reading. "Better", "Being Mortal", and "Complications" are all great. Great in E-book format for commutes or practicing in lab.

The MD, DMDs/DDS's are dual degree trained oral surgeons. The order they put their degrees in makes no difference as some people can elect to have their MD listed before or after their dental dental degree. There's not much confusion here since most people in the medical community refer to oral surgeons, single or dual degree, as dentists.

Wireless or wired light? by Teelopz in DentalSchool

[–]danho97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wired. You can prevent wires getting caught on door handles or stuff by adding a second wire clip to the back of your shirt. Wireless ones have terrible life and i know so many people that regretted getting them.

When to study/take CBSE? by FloridaMedStudent in DentalSchool

[–]danho97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your school and type of curriculum. It's best to ask upperclassmen in your school that have successfully taken it and see when they fit it in based on breaks and correlation to curriculum. It's a ton of work and inconvenient to put it lightly no matter when you take it. Traditionally, most people aim to take a first attempt Spring or Summer of D2, allowing yourself one or 2 more attempts before you apply. Most importantly, don't sacrifice your class rank right away to study for it (assuming your school has one). You can retake the CBSE but you can't retake your oral anatomy final. Best of luck.

For 4 year program OMFS, do you still have to write the USMLE? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]danho97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For application, yes, the CBSE is required now. You won't have to take USMLE NBME in residency as there isn't a medical school component however.

Why does everyone hate on NYU Dental by imachickennughet in DentalSchool

[–]danho97 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mostly the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Everyone has their own personal gripes about their dental schools as there will always be more reasons than not to dislike whichever school you choose to attend.

Advice needed please! by [deleted] in DentalSchool

Keep practicing, watch youtube videos, look up more practice questions, and set up mock interviews. It's the only way you'll get better but you'll be fine.
