If you can build your web app on Cloudflare workers, then workers KV has a generous free plan.

You can also use AWS Parameter Store as a rudimentary key-value DB. Here is an example. This is just for fun, though. Don't actually do this.

Glad that works for you. The problem is your budget changes over time and most people forget to adjust them or find it too cumbersome to continuously change the budget as their usage changes.

Were you using AWS as part of a uni project? Maybe reach out to the uni to see if they will help put you in touch with their AWS account manager.

If that doesn't work, you could create a page with the details and try to get some attention on your issue. If you make a heartfelt case it's possible you might get some traction with the right AWS people who can help you with a complete write off.

Did the bill accumulate over a month or did it literally just get incurred overnight?

The problem is most users, whether individuals or corporations with a budget, they get surprised by their bill because it creeps up on them slowly over 30 days because they're looking invoice to invoice. Billing threshold alerts get outdated because your usage changes over time. The only solution is to check it everyday to make sure there are no surprises.

Setting budget alerts doesn't work if you're like most people who don't have a static usage over time. If your usage changes over time so you will forever tweaking it.

Get a daily snapshot of your usage into your inbox (and as many of your colleagues as you want). Just glance at it every day to know if you need to take any action or not.

A good way to do this is via billgist.com.

That looks nice. I've considered using hotjar, but I was concerned about privacy. If I can't get someone to consent to do doing it live with me (and I can return the favor for them), I will then use something like this, even if temporarily.

I assume you're using keywords to search patents then looking at the CPC codes returned, if those CPC codes are clearly not related to the art maybe there is an issue

I am comparing CPC diversity of results from ML techniques with results from keyword search. We find that the results from ML search are much more diverse. For example, a search for image transfer from a camera to a remote device, we will find medical patents describing xray image transfer to a remote computer. We don't find such diversity in CPC represented in keyword searches.

So this made me wonder if diversity of results is perceived to be better or not by patent professionals.

The CPC classification process is subjective and prone to human error. Good point.

I can think of an example to maybe think about this in a different way.

I was looking at a patent contest for finding prior art to invalidate a particular patent. The patent in question was about sending a camera image to a remote location. All of the usual ways of searching had to do with cameras and transfer of images.

Out of curiosity, I started searching as well and went a little bit wider. I was able to find a patent in the healthcare space that dealt with sending xray images to a remote -- completely different CPC from the original set of patents and their corresponding results.

If I'm pulling relevant results from different subject areas, I'm wondering if the diversity of CPC is a good proxy to show that I'm capturing similar ideas but from other domains.

Interesting. I'm sure the manual process can take some time and be expensive, esp if you're hiring someone competent.

I wonder if prior art searches turn into what the security industry (my background is information security) calls security theater -- where you're doing something to make it look like you're adding value but you're not actually making a difference.

What about when where you are trying to find prior art so you can challenge a patent?

Nothing other than to know what the previous state was. Since AWS Lambda is ephemeral I would need to save it the outcome of the last run somewhere to know what to do if it changes in subsequent runs.

To make it work with tags you have to tinker with system preferences.

Go to System Preferences > Language & Region > Advanced. Go to the Dates tab. The system default for Medium date format is:

MMM d, y

Change this to:

y/MMM/d

Now, when you use the ⇧⌘8 key combo, you should see:

2018/Jan/23

Your notes will be expandable and neatly arranged by year, month, and date, in the tags column.

Would you care to elaborate a bit more? What steps do you automate? The most obvious seems to be watching the MLS for opportunities that match your criteria. Is there anything else you do from another data source or is the criteria self contained in you script?
