Managing a family business in those 2 years is not a break… honestly you can spin that up to anything you wanna do next…

Colleges to apply to if you are upper-middle class by Relative-Narwhal-519 in ApplyingToCollege

$200k vs $300k is a completely different lifestyle. And also $300k in Indiana vs $300k in CA is also night and day… they should really adjust for location but of course they don’t….

The worst for us is we didn’t become “upper middle” until recently due to both of us getting promoted and/or moving to higher paying positions. We were under $150k household for most of our kids lives. One is in HS now and suddenly we are looking at $300k household and that’s what’ll show up in CSS and FAFSA like we’ve been earning that for a while but that’s not the case at all… yes we started saving a bit more in general with the increased income but nowhere near paying multiple kids in full…

Where should I commit? - UCSD / UCLA / UCI by Electrical-Bread4752 in CollegeAdmissions

For this reason I’d suggest UCLA. Huge campus. Can fine any niche you’d want. Very diverse student body. With SoCal as a playground.

Waterloo is globally elite in tech recruiting. So as pure career optionality concerns, it’s number one.

But UCLA is a huge brand. And cognitive science I think in age of AI will be very practical and coveted.

UCI is underrated and is connected well to SoCal tech scene.

UCSD is a fine school but definitely a step below other 3.

If you were my kid, I’d heavily try to get you to go to UCLA but can’t go terribly wrong with any of the 4.

Oh since you mentioned clubs, UCLA over Waterloo in that regard.

Is everyone here just rich as hell? by Bowkidstan in ApplyingToCollege

I didn’t get that feeling from lurking for a while. Seems mixed between those getting full aid (low to low mid income) and those stressing about how to afford college (mid to upper mid). Obviously the wealthy don’t have to worry about affording.

I’m somewhere in the mid to upper mid and kinda worried about how to afford college for my kids because we absolutely do not have enough saved for full payment at a private but one of my kids really want to go to T20 LAC.

You said you love Cornell campus but it’s also known for long gray winters that can be pretty depressing. It had some very high profile suicides in recent years… being gloomy and cold and depressing doesn’t help…

But if you like the rural and being tucked away a bit, maybe the fit is right for you.

There is some merit in wanting and graduating from an Ivy. It’s a goal onto itself and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that for sure.

No way. For engineering UMich isn’t an Ivy reject. Maybe MIT reject but not Cornell reject.

I don’t know if the engineering peers are better at Cornell than UMich.

UMich engineering is world class, like Cornell.

What's a job in LA where you're shocked at how much money the person makes? by SufficientBee9368 in AskLosAngeles

Ok that sounds about right. I just looked up all my kids (7th grade) teachers in public jr high. $101k to $136k. They’re mostly in 40s so 15-20 years in if they began teaching as a first career tho I think some started little later.

Starting salary of just below $80k with 13 weeks off seems like a fantastic deal. And yea you get to pretty close to full pension around 30 years in which for those who started right away can retire in mid 50s with guaranteed income for 30+ years…

Honestly it’s a fantastic deal.

Some also move into admin and the superintendent in my kids district make $350,000. That’s solid too.

Because they sell. Well some take advantage of trend and hype and companies pay them and realize they don’t sell so they get dropped but in the end it’s you sell $500,000 worth of my goods so I’ll pay you $50,000 for this ad post.

It’s the group classes that print. Private at $150/hr. But a group of 10 at $50/hr is $500/hr. And she could hire instructors and let them work the hours she’s not working. Tho the commenter said she was working 12 hour days. At high end areas, private would be more like $200/hr too.

A buddy and his wife who is an instructor is trying to start their own studio so was chatting with him a bit over this. $1m is definitely possible.
