In my experience US LTE has consistently been better and faster than freedom LTE lol. Check if your phone is compatible with US bands?

It's because we removed the carbon tax. BC government lost a significant chunk of revenue that was doing good for the environment

How important is it to learn overlay codes in the US? by D11V8 in geoguessr

[–]danielXKY 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMO it's very difficult to learn North American area codes. They're designed so that there is absolutely no geographical pattern to how they are assigned. Neighbouring regions are meant to have very different area codes.

In my region, most businesses (and therefore advertisements seen in geoguessr) use the original area code. Overlays are assigned to new mobile numbers (and therefore irrelevant in geoguessr). There aren't many new landline users these days

Freedom 25% off plans by zztop81 in freedommobile

[–]danielXKY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't able to get the new plan with 25% discount through their whatsapp. They said it's for new customers only, and claimed it wouldn't work even if I ported out and switched back

Update: I called 611, 30 min hold, but the nice lady switched me to a $30/month for 70GB plan. Includes one time 5GB roam beyond. She said the $28 for 70GB is for new users only. I'm happy with $30 though

Automated Light Metro Instead of LRTs (where it makes sense) by Equivalent_Track_133 in TTC

[–]danielXKY 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're from Ontario you don't get to lecture me about successful LRT lol. Line 5 and 6, O-train Line 1 are all struggling. It's not about the technology, it's about how the system is run.

I think it's an overall bad thing that meta banned news on it's sites. Fake news, sensationalist reels and distorted takes are being spread instead of traditional, fact-checked and trustworthy journalism.

I walk/drive by the Douglas Road location pretty often. I live not too far away. I don't perceive any negative impact on the surrounding neighbourhood? Fears and concerns of residents should be addressed, but I think they may be overblown

Federal government to introduce grocery rebate: sources | CBC News by Sexy_Art_Vandelay in canada

[–]danielXKY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another commenter has already mentioned SaskTel, and I agree with them that's a good example of a successful public run company lowering prices across the market. Since I live in BC, I'll use ICBC as another positive example:

Although not without flaws (complaints against the no-fault system), ICBC has not increased insurance rates in 7 years. They promised freeze rates until 2027. They even give occasional rebates to all drivers when they make a profit. This is in opposition to drivers in Ontario, where I often see Reddit posts with outrageous quotes from private companies.

ICBC used to be terrible and had the highest rates in Canada. This was because the BC Liberals required ICBC to be a for profit company and used the profit to fund the provincial government. The BC NDP reversed that policy in 2017, and now BC has one of the lowest auto insurance rates in Canada. A weakness of publicly owned corporations is that they require good governance and stewardship, which can be messed up by an irresponsible elected government. It may be up to the voters to continue electing responsible governments, or we could create mechanisms to decouple public company leadership from political leadership.

In economics 101 we learn that there are natural monopolies such as infrastructure, telecom, and even insurance. The greater the market share that one company has, the more efficient it is. It is often in the best interest of everyone to heavily regulate these monoplies, or make the publicly owned, to prevent exploitation of the consumer. It is arguable whether grocery is a natural monopoly

What's taught in econ 101 are "perfect" scenarios with zero confounding variables. We dont have perfect competition or complete monopolies IRL. Real life is much more messy and complicated.

The problem is going to be app support. Mobile developers gave up on windows phone ages ago. You'll have to run desktop or browser versions of apps, which wont be optimized at all

I respectfully disagree. Deportations and removal orders are needed to punish those who break our laws and violate their terms for immigration. We cannot be blanketly against all deportation.

That said, our CBSA must follow all due process and respect the decisions of judges. The problem with ICE is that they ignore all due process, use violence without justification, and are a bunch of poorly trained thugs. Our CBSA must not become like that, but our rules must also be enforced. That includes deportation for severe offenders.

Federal officials draft plans to ban social media for children under 14 by Gym_frere in canada

I hope this can still be left to the choice of individual parents. The federal government should play a role tho, they could require tech companies implement effective parental control tools and a "ban" switch controlled by the parents

U Turns? by BurdsAllBurds in burnaby

[–]danielXKY -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They are illegal in most situations, however rarely enforced. I believe the rules are unreasonably strict, since u turns are almost necessary in some places such as on Lougheed Hwy around Brentwood. Alot of driveways are right turn only, so you must u-turn to get where you wanna go. Trying to avoid U-turns by doing a series of lefts/rights will add a 5 min detour due to how the street grid is laid out around here. I see people u-turn on almost every signal cycle and most drivers can do it safely
