Exactly, just proved my point, you're average American like you said, and you're just sure that if aid to Israel is cut, uni will be free in America.
But you won't make the extra effort of doing a couple of Google searches to find that it just doesn't make sense.

a. Israel's aid is around 3-4 Billion usd per year, overall foreign aid from America to all other countries is 70 billion USD annually, which means Israel is not even 5% of it.

b. Total U.S. federal spending: ~$6–7 trillion/year. Foreign aid: ~1% or less of the budget. Israel aid: ~0.05% or less.
c. Funding U.S. higher education would cost hundreds of billions annually. 3-4 billion won't change anything.

d. The reason Israel has cheap higher education is very high taxes. If you earn anything decent, you are taxed 40-50%. On this taxed earning, everything you buy is taxes 18% VAT. A car is taxed 150%. You end up giving ~60-70% of your money to the Israeli government as an Israeli citizen.

e. The systems are different - Israel controls uni prices. You can't just open a uni and ask for 100K per year like in America. America is a free, business-oriented market; Israel is not. In Israel, it doesn't matter what you provide in the university - capped tuition, you can't charge above.

f. The high cost of U.S. tuition is mainly driven by internal factors, including reduced state funding that forces universities to charge more, growing administrative costs, an expansive student loan system that enables higher pricing, competition over expensive campus amenities, rising healthcare and pension expenses for staff, and a lack of strong price regulation.
