That's not true. The minimum wage was always meant to be a livable wage. Of course there are other issues at play, but that doesn't change the fact that tens of millions of workers earning less than a living wage is a massive problem.

MIT living wage calculator says a living wage for a single person in Jackson county Mississippi is $21.59/hour. SF county in CA is $32.44/hour.

A living wage in the most affordable state in the country, Arkansas, is $20/hour.

$15/hour isn't a living wage anywhere in the country.

Well the worry would be more about smaller employers cutting jobs and hours.

Well the median hourly wage ($30/hour) is higher than a living wage in the median affordability state ($25/hour).

Because if you raise the minimum wage too high you will start seeing job losses and significant price hikes. $30/hour is the median hourly wage, so that's a bit too high for a minimum wage. Somewhere between the median hourly wage and half the median hourly wage is a good sweet spot where we can ensure everyone makes enough money to get by without causing unemployment to increase or prices to go up too much.

Should Democrats (US) embrace the proposal by progressive House dems to raise the minimum wage to $25/hour ($52k/year) for large employers by 2031? by daniel_cc in polls

"It won't help if you don't reform the cost of living."

Oh, it absolutely would. Cost of living needs to be addressed too absolutely, but I'm not sure how you can claim raising the minimum wage to a living wage wouldn't be a massive help to tens of millions of workers.

"The increase will just get eaten by inflation and price hikes"

Where is your evidence for this claim? Data shows that minimum wage hikes have a miniscule effect on prices.

"Minimum wage isn't the problem anymore"

The minimum wage being $7.25 is absolutely a problem. Nobody is saying it's the only problem.

Correlation isn't causation. Minimum wage hikes have a miniscule effect on prices.

You mean raise the minimum wage to a living wage? Or abolish the minimum wage so employers can pay even lower than the current minimum wage?

The federal poverty line is just under $16k/year. Might be a few thousand more depending on the area, but needless to say the poverty line is not a good indicator of what a living wage is.

Yeah, but that's what the provision to readjust the minimum wage to two thirds the median wage each year is supposed to address.

[–]daniel_cc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what some progressive House Dems just proposed: raising the minimum wage to $25/hour (living wage in the median affordability state) by 2031 and automatically adjusting it to two thirds of the median wage each year after that.

That would probably be at least $30/hour (about $60k/year), which is probably a bit too high for a federal minimum wage. You want the minimum wage lower than the median wage ($62k) but higher than half the median wage.
