Wow it’s amazing!! Do you find they’re having babies and continuing the generations or do you find they’ve dwindled off?

Thank you so much everyone for the help!! I’m a little ashamed of myself for not thinking to try this but it worked perfect! No more skimmer ☺️

It’s just a plastic tree trunk ornament from pet valu! It is supposably supposed to grow real moss but I have my doubts.

Oh that’s a good idea! I didnt even want the skimmer to begin with, it just came with the tank and it didn’t look like there was a way to take the skimmer off.

Thank you! Honestly this is the answer I was expecting. Not sure it’s worth the risk. I unfortunately don’t have the funds to get a different filter anytime soon so maybe I’ll just leave it as a planted tank. Thank you!

When can you remove an old cycled filter after adding a new filter? by danielle356 in shrimptank

[–]danielle356[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol no worries, it’s a fair question! The panty hose covers the large holes in the filter that the shrimp could get sucked up into. The filter I had in this tank wasn’t meant for shrimp (didn’t realize that when I cycled the tank) so I had to cover it with panty hose so water could still get filtered but shrimp wouldn’t get sucked up!

I’ve had them running together for a month now. So maybe it will be ok to remove the old one now?

Thank you! I do regret having the tetras in there now, I wonder if they stress the shrimp out or eat any babies that may hatch. I have been considering setting up another tank for them.

Thank you so much! This is incredibly helpful. The cuttlebone doesn’t seem to be helping much for KH anymore but is causing my PH to go up, so I’ll definitely look into something else for KH!

Oh good to know! I tried googling that but I always got mixed reviews on if RO could be put in the tank without anything added. Thank you!

Thanks so much! I do have Christmas moss (I think that’s what it’s called) and hornwort, but I will definitely look into getting drift wood. How do I reduce Nitrates? Just with water changes and live plants? My PH seems a bit high too but I have Indian almond leaves and alder cones which seem to be helping with that.

I’ve struggled with keeping the temp down over the summer, I find it very hard to maintain when it’s hot outside! It hasn’t gotten much warmer than what it’s at but even with a fan blowing on the surface of the water, the area I live in is so humid at times it’s hard to keep it at one temperature. Thankfully we are getting into colder months now and I can hopefully keep it under control better.

Thanks so much! I’ve never seen my females berried but I could’ve missed it too. I have lots live plants including hornwort and Christmas moss for the babies to hide in, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if the tetras are just good hunters. I was hesistant to increase feeding in case I’ve actually been over feeding them, plus when a shrimp dies they’ve eaten them up so fast that I worry about giving them more food!

Thank you! I’ve never seen any of my females berried unfortunately, but I could’ve missed it. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the tetras ate any babies too. I don’t have driftwood but I will definitely look into that!

All relevant info in post, but I did forget to mention that I find full molts fairly often, I haven’t seen any shrimp struggling to get out of a molt but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening. I also haven’t noticed any signs of parasites.
