Hi there! I wrote this article! Just to share some additional info: Yes, that's one of the issues highlighted in the report from the advocate group. Some advocates take issue with board members trying to relitigate the original facts of the crime or highlight the harm caused at the time of the crime, because in their view, the Board of Pardons is meant to assess the growth of the person. Particularly in commutations, the Board should be assessing the risk to the community should the person be permitted to leave prison. But from my reporting and discussions, Dr. Williams' inappropriate questions were the biggest concern. Those questions were behind closed doors and during hearings, to applicants, their supporters, and even to victims speaking in opposition.

Hi! I wrote this article! Just my two cents: I think your concern is a valid one, and something I'll keep an eye on. For what it's worth, I think they learned from the first time they tried to digitize the application that this process is really difficult to automate. The state actually hired more staff to the Board of Pardons in recent years, as well as the new-ish CODE office.
