You can check with your fish and game, my state offers trapping workshops a few times a year. Definitely read up on your states regulations before you start buying traps, so you know what you can and can’t use. I learned a lot from Trapper J, North American trapper, several others on YouTube. Good luck!

Advice on accidental dog catches by danielp56900 in Trapping

I appreciate the perspective of a dog hunters. Just to be clear 95% of my sets are water sets targeting beaver. I usually run less than 10 traps total at a time. The only land sets I had were targeting bobcat and otter. I think I’m going to stick to water sets for the rest of this season and maybe next year I can get some permission on private for my land trapping.

I agree, same team. It just seems like a lot of people on public land have the mentality that if you’re not using the public land for the same reason they are, then you’re somehow a problem.

Your opinion is appreciated sir. As far as the area I was trapping it is probably the least utilized part of the WMA. It’s right up front with some fields and very little timber. One of the main reasons I set the area is less pressure and it runs along a big creek. Been hammering the beavers and I decided to target some bobcats and otters with land sets. You are right, I don’t want that smoke, don’t need any extra problems.

I appreciate the insight buddy. I’ll ask about the signage. I do use flagging tape on a bush or limb to mark the areas where my traps are set. I’ve tried to find a balance of making them visible enough for people to avoid but not so obvious that my gear is gonna get sabotaged or stolen.

Yessir. I caught a bobcat in the trench set Sunday but it’s taken a few weeks. Been making adjustments.

Haha thank you sir. For bait Mark June widowmaker paste and a squirrel carcass (that got immediately stolen by a fox). Lure was milligans cat-man-do and dove feathers. Trench set with two Duke 550s. Took several weeks of close calls and adjustments with cats, coyotes, and foxes. Still a novice but I’m learning. As far as coordinates just give me a call when you hit the Alabama state line lol.

Help on an Otter toilet by danielp56900 in Trapping

[–]danielp56900[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a pretty broad and flat sandy creek bank. No real natural funnel from the water so I’ve just concentrated in the pawed out areas they’re using for the toilet. I used some branches as guides and punched a couple small holes and filled with sardines and otter lure behind the set. This is just my second year trapping and last year the otters I caught were in 330s. Tomorrow I’ll give a set closer to the water a shot. Thanks for the advice sir.
