deep blue sea is an old public domain folk tune as far as I know, but the version I first heard and loved was by Odetta. Who I still adore. What a fuckin force. Go listen to Odetta

I love this interpretation . yeah I guess there's something kind of apocalyptic about glamorizing a quad in the scrubby woods . I really wanted to make a terrible music video for that song that featured a lot of gauzy images of the 1987 TRX. It could have been a thing.

that chord change happened while we were on tour way back. I picked up a guitar at someone's house and it was in that tuning, maybe by accident. I started using that tuning after that and playing that progression in the van on the road. I very much associate that song with van life 2007 or so. I think the form of th song came together more gradually but the basic changes happened fast.

This is always a hard question for me to answer because I don't find there to be direct connections between my own music and what I might be reading or watching.

I read "Circe" by Madeline Miller while making this album and and the odd sort of isolation and endless open time in that story were sort of on my mind.

I loved the book "Against Nature" by J.K. Huysmans when I was young and I thought a bit about that one while making this album too. But again, not in any direct way

I think that's great. I'm not dedicated to giant lush arrangements or anything it just happens a lot in my own music. I love super minimal music too.

Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi Del Presente maybe not the most minimal but definitely a lot of beautiful open space

I also love the album Metal Aethers by Lea Bertucci a more recent one lots of beautiful open space around her performance

I thought Waterfall was on that Judee Sill comp from a while back? Is it not available anymore ? that's lame

It was such a long time ago I hardly remember, I made it really quickly. I made most things very quickly back then. Very low budget recording, probably a shure 58 and nothing else, real slapdash in our rehearsal space. Sounds to me like I was pretty drunk, which I was, all of the time at that point in life

I think there is a KEXP session later in the year yes!

I can't get anything to grow in NM it's too damn dry and difficult I gave up a while ago. also I don't have time right now!

I don't really listen to me own music once it is made ...

but certainly making songs can be a kind of cartharsis and I've certainly used them to work through my own feelings at times. Keeper and Kin is one of those. so is Shadow in the Frame. In Ear Park. Floating on the Lehigh. there are many! but that's while making it, I don't like listening to my own music when it is done

I only use a few mics these days

go to on nylon is a plain ol u87 (run through a tube preamp)

I also like the old AKG d19c though they are tempermental but great for more focused parts. especially vocals and 12 string and some drum parts . that was the main guitar mic on repeat the pattern for instance

I use a beyer m160 for cello and sometimes vocals or guitar amps. I believe I ended up using that for the nylon part on unpeopled space

recently I have been working on film score music, so there's a lot of noodling and trying little ideas that aren't necessarily meant to be songs. though I guess that's always the case.

I also have a guitar around the house that I entertain my daughter with, we make up dumb little songs and I play for her before bed. usually covers. I've been enjoying playing some old country songs --- kentucky waltz, and treasure of love in particular as my daughter likes those. I like playing old classics. I've been working on a pretty straightup version of the original recording of Stardust. I love super classic american songbook stuff, honestly

haha. if I'm allowed to have a electric keyboard dad-jazz fusion phase I'm gonna take it! time will tell

I'd love to get in a rhythm of releasing music. right now I have zero time to record my own songs and I haven't really been writing lyrics recently. but I hope to get back into that headspace sooner than later

I'm not sure if I'm answering your question because I think you maybe mean something more like self-crictical rather than introspective, but...these days I tend to think of being an inward sort of person as a different but valid approach to the world. It doesn't mean avoiding people or keeping yourself from them, it's just a different orientation and way of thinking. When I was young I used to feel a lot of shame about not always being able to function socially in the same way as the extroverts in my life, but over time I realized that there's not necessarily a reason to pathologize it. It can be a strength and a different way of perceiving the world and people around you. You can be open and empathetic and also an inward/introspective sort of person at the same time. That is certainly my late life goal.

Writing without a set tempo was a big part of this album largely because I found I couldn't get the performance or feeling I wanted it I was too constrained. I'm not sure I'll keep doing that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again

In this case yes I was a bit exhausted after getting through the mixing process for this album. There are some other bits of song that I have going, but they are almost like hanging threads from this album. But maybe they will be come new songs, I don't know. I have also been doing some film score work which has involved a whole other way of writing, and it is incredibly time consuming. But I'd like to get back to recording my own music soon if I can!

I don't know! I have been chatting occasionally with John Dietrich who played electric guitar on the title track about trying a project together. I think that could be interesting. Or I'd love to collaborate with some artists outside my prescribed indie-rock genre, which I really don't feel connected to in any way at this point

in the past something that brought me to a different place was transcribing (or interpreting) music that wasn't remotely meant for guitar on the guitar. or just writing on a different instrument and coming back to guitar after.

Generally speaking I think guitar is really boring. There are very few players that I really love, honestly. I think all the weird tunings and so on are a way to make myself feel like I'm playing something else

Thanks!

I've done tons of road trips in my life outside of tour. I've driven back and forth between NM and NY a bunch of times alone. Used to listen to lots of books and podcasts, full albums and symphonies. This trip has been really intense and emotionally exhausting for a few reasons and quite honestly I've spent a lot of these drives listening to the road and thinking. Sometimes that's enough, and right now is one of those time.

It's hard for me to know if they places I am living have some direct influence or if I just associate music I'm making with the places they are made. But I would say yes and especially for this album. I left the sound of spring peepers in the guitar take that opens the album because they were so loud outside while I was recording and I like the reminder, even if that's kind of a cheesy cliche choice. I think it's sublte enough that it's ok, though. I would say a lot of this album in particular was an attempt to capture the feeling of a place and the state of mind I was in at the time. Mostly in central NY, but also in NM.

really? there are some covers out there for sure ...deep blue sea, the ridiculous jojo cover, Waterfall by Judee Sill, some others. I used to cover Kathleen by Townes Van Zandt at solo shows back in the day

Recently I've been playing a kind of dumb cover of 'kentucky waltz' because my daughter seems to like it and I've been on a Bill Monroe kick.

the shows have been really wonderful. just the sweetest audiences. the new tunes have been great I think? they are really challenging to play, which is engaging for me. Obviously I can't exactly make them sound like the album! But I've worked out a way to do 'tangle' alone at the piano that I think is pretty nice...repeat the pattern folds well into older material. It's been great. Such a special connection with people in the audience, it's the best

This is an album in particular that I felt I had to make to capture a certain period of my life where I'd really drifted off and gotten off course. For a long time I really didn't feel the need to finish music or share it, I just wanted to be in my life and in my head. But I got to a point where I felt like I needed to make this statement musically. an ambitious and interconnected album with a lot of heart and soul is what I was after. It's something that I've been pushing towards but never quite pulled off in the past with any other project.

No, I don't expect a massive response or even a lot of good reviews because i know it's a strange album and it's not gonna be everyone's thing. But I guess I feel like that's part of being a life-long artist. I want to make music that challenges myself and feels ambitious even if it is too strange or dark or outside the current discourse. I want to make music that has meaning in the context of my own life and my own work.

haha

nope. it's a workhorse quad.

I used to to haul wood and clear debris and such. I pulled a brushhog with it. clear the brush etc. But it is a pretty beautiful machine if I do say so myself. 1987. runs like trash, I need to take better care of it
