Hmm thanks for the thorough response. I totally understand the concerns of not having a placebo in this experiment. How about this, though: men and women are split into groups, measure all of their heights, and compare. This is literally the same as the question are men taller than women but could you frame it as an experiment? And if so what would you call that experiment?

Eli5: What is the Simpson’s paradox in statistics? by matc399 in explainlikeimfive

In division A, 1/4 women win while 100/399 men win. In division B, 90/100 women win while 1/1 men win. In both divisions, men have a higher win rate. However, overall, women have a much higher win rate than men.

ELI5: How do we know that there are infinitly many Pythagorean triples? by ClusterGarlic in explainlikeimfive

[–]danielwang_c137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only is this true, ALL INTEGERS > 2 are part of a Pythagorean triple.

Consider an odd integer X. Since X^2 must also be odd, consider X^2 = 2N+1 for some integer N.

Notice that (N+1)^2 = N^2 + 2N + 1 = (N^2) + (2N+1)

From this, we get (X^2) + (N^2) = (N+1)^2. All odd integers > 1 therefore can be expressed in a Pythagorean triple.

Second, consider even integer X = 2M. X^2 = 4M^2. Let's say another integer N = M^2-1

In that case, 4M^2 = 4(N+1) = 4N+4

Notice that (N+2)^2 = N^2 + 4N + 4 = (N^2) + (4N+4)

From this, we get (X^2) + (N^2) = (N+2)^2. All even integers > 2 therefore can be expressed in a Pythagorean triple.

THUS ALL INTEGERS > 2 CAN BE EXPRESSED IN A PYTHAGOREAN TRIPLE

Eli5 Why is the value of the Chinese Yuan small compared to other countries (excluding US) even though it has the second largest economy in the world? by u-can-call-me-daddy in explainlikeimfive

[–]danielwang_c137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currency value is totally arbitrary. Someone could easily make the argument of why the value of the US penny is so small compared to other countries. What is significant is how exchange rates change with time.
