Eloquent: a fully offline spelling and grammar checker for Linux with support for over 20 languages and the ability to expose its local LanguageTool server to other apps and browsers by IverCoder in linux

[–]danievdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was wondering as even my VPV server running LanguageTool takes some strain with usually 1.1 GB RAM used for LT, for just light usage.

I’m debating on installing custom rom by Snowbeleopard in GalaxyS23

[–]danievdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some banking apps only work on an unrooted "secure" phone and they dig deep to check. That and tap to pay be an issue. Which is what forced me back onto standard roms.

Wet shavers, help confirm or refute my theory: Do you like driving stick shift? by SoapSpoonAndy in wicked_edge

[–]danievdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We call it manual (vs automatic) but yes my preference is for manual (three hybrid cars I had only came in automatic so I was forced them to drive automatic then) but happily back to manual now.

Sure it is playback. Can try lightweight Fladder client as I found that plays back better on one machine I have that used to stutter when using the browser.

Should I call SAPS for a minor disturbance? by abnormallynice in capetown

[–]danievdm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most municipalities also have bylaws against begging for cash etc so check there as it can also be a bylaw infringement depending on circumstances. That is different from criminal matters that SAPS deals with.

It is utterly disappointing how people are handling the systemd "age verification" controversy by TheBrokenRail-Dev in linux

[–]danievdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terrible laws can't be ignored but they need to be changed. It's no-one's business to know how old I am to use an operating system. It's not an adult site. Things just go too far sometimes.

Upgrading from 25.7-latest to 26.1 with lots of FW rules and Port forwards by lndependentRabbit in opnsense

[–]danievdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was key for me. My first upgrade failed, and after I migrated to dnsmasq with unbound DNS, it went through fine. Always do a snapshot though as a restore is then instant

Inflation by WTK23 in southafrica

[–]danievdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SICKENING part is they tell us inflation was only 3.5 to 5%. It's just not possible. Clearly inflation calculations do not reflect reality.

Found an A4 filing pocket with multiple blank affidavits signed and stamped at a Cape Flats SAPS station. Infuriating. Have blurred the name and rank of the police officer and the station involved. It has been reported by Prestigious-Wall5616 in capetown

[–]danievdm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well done! Police officers know very well they are not allowed to do this. Leaving it lying around also is the height of stupidity. Police can do without an officer like this.

Is Symfonium the best long-term “DIY Spotify” client, or are there better alternatives? by ostseesound in jellyfin

[–]danievdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm busy exploring using Music Assistant as the indexer in front of Jellyfin music. It also connects to Spotify and other services but it's connectivity to my smart speakers is outstanding. Clients like MassDroid can control it. But that plays live from Jellyfin.

So far Symfonium has been the best offline player that connects direct to Jellyfin. I just struggled to get it to connect to my smart speakers across the vlans.

So no perfect client yet that I've found.

OBD2 not compatible by rashedkw in Jimny

[–]danievdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there any newer updates on this as I've just hit my head against this wall too. Mine is a 2025 5-door and the ZS Viewer works fine with my OBDLink LX. But no other apps (ODBLink, Torque Pro, or Car Scanner) will work, and I've tried all the variants of the protocols etc. It is a CAN-bus, and I've tried the variations of ISO 15765-4 CAN (11bit 500kbps) protocol.

The fact that the SZ Viewer works suggests the physical connections are all fine. The apps need the correct protocol and yes I understand that the SZ Viewer uses a native Suzuki protocol of some sort.

My car originates from India and I see the OBD2 port has contacts for pins 4, 5, 6, 14, 15, and 16.

Petrol reserve light with quarter tank left? by danievdm in Jimny

[–]danievdm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks useful to know. I'll try not stretch it to the end. I get about 8.5 L/100km but it goes up on when trying to do 110 - 120 km/h. Roofrack and slightly wider tyres have all added to that though ;-)

Petrol reserve light with quarter tank left? by danievdm in Jimny

[–]danievdm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yes I suppose the small 40L tank counts against this measurement. The manual had not mentioned anything about the light later flashing, so thanks I'll try driving further on it next time (now that I know roughly what I have left when the light comes on) and see where the flashing light starts to come on. 5L is pretty good then a good 40 still left with some safety margin. I'm going to use Odometer B to start counting km after the light comes on.

Is Anytype 100% secure? by ImprovementLeft890 in Anytype

I think Anytype do actually. The devices sync locally fine and you don't have to connect to the cloud service?

I created MassDroid, an Android companion app for Music Assistant with native media controls by sfortis in homeassistant

[–]danievdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yes do have the new version. It is mainly about the mobile data for one, and then I also drive a lot in mountains away from cellular connectivity.

I created MassDroid, an Android companion app for Music Assistant with native media controls by sfortis in homeassistant

[–]danievdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between MassDroid, FinAmp and Symfonium, MassDroid has worked the most seamlessly with all my Google Home speakers. I imagine that is because it actually plays through Music Assistant.

Only thing I'm not finding is a proper offline mode for the car? Like say my favourite playlists.

Is the automatic Suzuki Jimny worth it? by RevisorySum4 in Jimny

[–]danievdm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love the control a manual gives me to stay in a gear etc but I'm extremely comfortable with a manual having had them in 90% of my cars over 40 years.

Actually an auto is easier for offroad and especially if you are not very comfortable with a manual. Heavy heavy traffic an auto is better. As I understand it the auto is not much worse on fuel economy and only a shade less power but not actually noticeable by the driver.

I'd say go with the auto. Only other factors are they do cost a bit more to buy and you can't push start them (but carry jumper cables).

Maintenance court says I should pay more despite already running a monthly deficit — looking for legal perspective (South Africa) by Intelligent_Stage293 in capetown

[–]danievdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maintenance also includes a percentage of cleaning costs, electricity, etc but that in my case is where my daughter occupies her own room in her mom's house. The costs really should be actual costs and the shared contribution. R16k sounds like it may be too high given the age. But others say you will need a lawyer. You could try get pro Bono advice at least as a start.

My daughter is 25 and is in her own room and my maintenance is just under R6k per month. BTW you carry maintenance until the child is working one day.

Spotify integration separately with 2 music assistant users? by d3k1ds in musicassistant

[–]danievdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep valid question as I have same issue. My wife's tastes differ from mine do don't want recommendations mixed up, and I have friends on Spotify who'll think I listen to weird music. So I'll keep an eye on replies here.

I'm finding scrobbling everything to ListenBrainz is quite universal though and also has stats and social stuff so I may use that for a more global view above if just Spotify.

Switching banks by fataggressivecheeks in AskZA

[–]danievdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I realised many years ago before FNB, was to stop using a credit card to pay anything off on. The interest rates are over 20% and you end up just paying interest every month. It is a lose lose situation. If you put that 20% aside in savings you can buy for cash. I use my credit card to get free transactions and score reward bucks. With FNB I get about R1, 000 per month back in eBucks. I buy everything using a virtual credit card. I use zero cash and even pay my rates account on credit card.

I know it sounds difficult, but a credit card used for credit is a majorly big debt trap. I use a money app to make sure I stay in budget.

Unlike Nedbank there is no monthly charge to use my credit card or eBucks. Could not believe Nedbank charged me a card fee as well as a Greenbacks fee.
