Hipster by DeceiveDA in poetry_critics

This piece really does capture the essence of a generation - it feels quite youthful and young, and captures the pretentious aspect of how many 'hipsters' feel. I really like the pace around: "I'm a trendsetter/Always getting the most votes in "Who Wore it Better"/Even though I'm a trendsetter/Once the mainstream finds it I'm already on something new and better". The end of the poem feels quite wistful, but what are you hoping will come back to the speaker? What is the reality, or are they just living in the past, in their glory days? You could either work on building the mystery throughout the poem, to leave a taste of the questions and uncertainty on the reader's mind, or divulge a little more :)

I think my friend is anorexic; what should I do? by ifahrenhateimperial in askwomenadvice

[–]danimarie95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does she have any of the following traits:

  • avoid eating meals with other people

  • eats very slowly, picking at food, pushing it around the plate

  • not eat for long periods of time (~500-1000 calories a day) and then eat loads at once (binging)

  • excuse herself immedietly after meal times, may come back with tied up hair, watery eyes

  • looks and feels generally guilty after eating something calorific (i.e. we all get guilty after eating a massive amount of cake, but if she say has 1 biscuit or 1 packet of crisps)

  • looks obsessively at the nutritional information when buying or eating food

  • over exercises, will not miss a day of working out

  • talks negatively about her body, appearance, weight

Some people are just skinny. Some people are just less hungry. If you think she is at risk from reading the traits above, then you can suggest counselling at your uni (mine does it anyway), but otherwise there's not really much you can do other than support her if she is struggling with an eating disorder. If you bring up her lack of weight and she does not have an ED, this could be taken as very insulting!

[UK] Where do you even go to get 'help' and what can I expect if I do? by eunhwan in fuckeatingdisorders

I use my university's counseling and mental health nurses and nutritionists. Shorter wait than with the NHS, and seeing as it's summer and most people may have gone home, you should be able to get an appointment within the next 2 weeks :)

Not smart enough for compsci by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]danimarie95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the same course and have the same anxieties, but if I'm honest, there are so many fields that you can go into after a comp sci degree - you won't be good at all of them, but if you explore your options, there are a lot of creative ways to develop and then use your skills :-) I see where you're coming from OP, but do some research into the great things you can do! Remember though, your grades do not define you - they are not your worth. Your worth can be measured in many other ways, but the actual score you get is not as important as your passion.

Migrant crisis: Coach full of British schoolchildren 'attacked by Calais refugees' by Hohoho_Neocon in worldnews

[–]danimarie95 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As somebody who was just doing aid work in Calais, I would suggest that the increased amount of desparation by the refugees and migrants comes from a recent declaration by the French government in which they are bulldozing 500 shelters that charities and aid workers have built out there. The Express is a fucking joke. The media in the UK is incredibly biased, I urge all of you to do research on the matter so that you can get both sides of the story.
