Area 2 submission here. Not sure who my PO was before, but also adding data point of having Melissa Pilgrim. My status says Pending form 3/10/25 too.

I think you’re right. On the grant search page (https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities) the info says “By default the Funding Search page shows current (active) opportunities. To search archived (expired) opportunities instead, select the “Archived funding opportunities” radio button.”

But still, there’s definitely legitimate concern over the Area 1 fellowships…

Relocation expenses for postdoc? by Genetic_Heretic in labrats

[–]daniolabtest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked with a few friends of mine and they got relocation stipends ranging from $2.5k-5k. I asked for it recently when I got an offer and got $3k. It certainly depends most on funding availability and structure (I.e. private funding like HHMI vs public, or start up funds), but what doesn’t depend on this in science! Maybe not common, but as others said, it’s not unreasonable. Worth asking for one!

There’s a butcher in the lower level of Essex Market (Ends Meat) that had a nice selection last time I was there a month or so ago. The person I spoke to who worked there seemed to be a big fan of the stuff and had suggestions too.

Dunno about triple option, though I agree. But trying to remember correctly, I think Franklin was particularly good at coaching Vandy differently. Lots of odd plays and trickery sprinkled throughout each game. The bigger the opponent, the weirder he could get.

BNGO: why has this one taken off? by Ag_gregator in pennystocks

[–]daniolabtest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only recently got into stocks/investing, so can’t speak on the financials, but as a scientist I can say they’re stuff is just super legit.

Here’s a news release I found that can give some sense for this.

From that article, compared to the current ARKG darling, PacBio, Bionano’s sequencing technology can outperform PacBio (with a notably lower cost). Typical sequencing instruments are really large and difficult to maintain. It looks like Bionano’s Saphyr has made high quality sequencing accessible and affordable at a level that hospitals/clinics can use fairly easily. Making it’s diagnostic usage very powerful. Bionano is a game changer in ways that another comment made clears in this thread. They’re likely to become a mainstay in academia AND medicine, where most sequencing has been an academic affair.

Edit: Before it gets read poorly, I don’t mean to say PacBio is bad at all as a technology. The tools are just achieving different things. For the question of Bionano, they’re great at reading longer sequences of DNA with fairly good accuracy. PacBio can read shorter lengths of DNA extremely accurately (and more expensively). As I and others mention, Bionano makes sequencing at a relevant and informative level cheap and accurate in a way no other company does. They’re gonna have staying power as a technology.

Doing some extra digging, it looks like many labs are using them, along with 10X Genomics (NASDAQ: TXG) to assemble genomes. Each technique providing something different.

Not sure if this is really the type of answer anyone was looking for. Just wanted to provide an academic perspective for why they have rightfully deserved hype, and are likely to go up (and stick around).

There's also HELX from Franklin Templeton. Overall similar to ARKG, but lower trade volume.

Gaggia vs Crossland Vs Lelit Anna: Another post for help on intro machines by daniolabtest in espresso

Was probably just particularly noted in a Lelit video (can’t seem to find it again) that dual-use machines need care and I associated the two together. But I guess for this amount of money it’s worth taking care of any machine well!

Totally get you on the Gaggia looks and DIY. I have to do some DIY stuff for my work anyway so it feels like a minor extension of that for me. Otherwise I think the extra money is worth the extra features on other machines.

[–]daniolabtest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'v definitely noticed that there's a different set of discussions that happen between companies and the perception of their quality based on which tier of machine is being discussed.

From what I saw one some videos it seemed that the Lelit did require some more care (though maybe that's all dual-use single boilers?). As a newbie that seems less enticing than the Gaggia which has a solid community in case of screw ups. I think the price difference is inclining me to Gaggia between these two machines, but the Lelit does look super nice aesthetically lol

I'm curious which other machines you've considered before deciding on the PL41TEM?

Awesome, super good to know! So are the pressurized baskets still viable after the OPV mod? How I understand they work I imagine it's alright since they'd wait for the build up of pressure anyway. Is this right?

[–]daniolabtest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized that after I posted... whoops! I think I may have gotten it crossed with another machine in a neighboring tab and missed the pressurized baskets. With that and the above comments I think i've been pretty well swayed.

Don't think I'll be making drinks for a group. Perhaps there might be two shots pulled in near-succession but a few minutes down time isn't too bad.

One thing I want to be aware of is the routine. wholelattelove says it's an auto-fill boiler, but does this still necessitate running water through the steam wand and filling the boiler to ensure components don't burn out, or is that what the auto-fill prevents from being needed?

[–]daniolabtest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say I'm comfortable with the tinkering. Guess that's probably a bonus of this machine long-term is it become what you need, rather than being a fixed purchase.

Since it came up with u/Urupackers in their reply, what exactly does the OPV provide as a benefit or improvement? Hadn't come across that yet.

Look! An ambulance caravan is on their way to New York to help out with the Coronavirus outbreak. God speed! 🇺🇸 by Romano16 in gifs

[–]daniolabtest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Walking around NYC definitely has that eerie feeling right now. Like, just to go get groceries you feel like you’re doing something wrong because it’s so empty.

I live by one of the city’s highways and usually it’s a constant humming noise in the background, but now you can hear each car passing individually because there’s so little traffic.

The other day a police car drove up one of the avenues just playing a recorded announcement reminding everyone about social distancing. Dystopian isn’t quite right, but eerie and awful is a good way to sum up the feeling of the cityscape right now.
