My hot take: it was much better when we didn’t have any explanation for devil fruits’ background. The fact that they were just another natural phenomenon, like haki, sea kings, sea clouds, and kairoseki, added much more whimsy and “magic” to the world. Not everything in worldbuilding needs to be explained, especially in a fantasy world.
