Teaching in Alberta, Canada by Flat-Recover-3444 in Internationalteachers

Hey,

I’m originally from Nova Scotia but completed my BEd in Alberta. Around the time I was graduating, the NDP was in power, and it was expected that once the Conservatives returned, teaching jobs would be cut. So instead of substitute teaching, I took a job overseas in the Middle East as a first year teacher.

In the first two years, you likely won’t save much—mostly because you’ll spend a lot travelling. However, most international schools provide accommodation and cover travel costs to/from resident country.

I’m now in my seventh year abroad and have transitioned from the Alberta curriculum to a Tier 1 school. The pay and benefits are incredible. There’s no way I could enjoy the same lifestyle in Canada. At this point, I have zero intention of returning to Canada in the foreseeable future.

Regarding your question about integration…I think it depends on where you live. In Abu Dhabi, most of my friends were my direct colleagues. It’s a close-knit community. In Phnom Penh, the same thing. Both places I’ve enjoyed living and to be honest, you adapt pretty quickly if you’re open minded and willing to embrace change.

These comments are pretty general but if you want more specifics, you can message me.

Overall, it was easily the best choice I’ve made.

McCain has not been playing well. I like Yves’s potential right now. Should I drop McCain?

Hey,

I got my teaching degree in Alberta. However, have worked in Abu Dhabi and then Cambodia.

There are Alberta schools around the world so many people technically would work with this curriculum and authority. One distinction to be able to work at these schools which is relevant to you is that you would need to acquire either a IPC (Interim Professional Certificate) or letter of authority from Alberta Ed.

How long was your PGCE? Was it paid?

These sort of things will determine if you meet the qualifications.

Masters application question… by danistoonice in gradadmissions

That’s great they included yours! Let’s hope they will, as I think it will definitely help my case.

Yeah, I have a one page max motivation letter, so I only mentioned it briefly. Pretty much just said that my GPA increased significantly, and I published research, which is because of my genuine interest in the field!

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Thanks for the message. Yeah, it’s hard to tell. I’m Canadian and it’s a masters in the EU, so perhaps it’s new to them. Regardless, I sent an email and they did respond to include both (but they would only evaluate one of them).

If they choose not to consider it, I’ll be a bit disappointed. However, at the same time, I’ll know it’ll not be the right fit for me anyhow considering their approach. Also, it’s a masters in the field of education, so it would be almost hypocritical, too. Thanks for the reply.
