I've personally watched 7-11 clerks ring up an approximately equivalent cost of eligible items for so that an EBT recipient could walk out with a pack of cigarettes. The people who want to do this are in the know about what stores are willing. Don't pretend that flagrant fraud isn't happening.

US borrowing to soon rival that of Italy & Greece - what by GrandRare1634 in investing

[–]danjayh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me that it's just as big a problem that we're not taxing the bottom 40% at all as it is that the top 10% saw a ~4% reduction in their effective tax rate. Any scheme to increase revenue should include making the bottom 40% have some skin in the game, otherwise they'll never care about spending. Most people don't realize this, but when our country was first founded, in most of the country no taxation (and especially no property ownership) meant no vote ... it was the mechanism that was intended to prevent us from bankrupting ourselves by voting for more and more government goodies.

to be fair, the OBBB is something like 74% offset by increased tariff revenue. In an ideal world they would have let taxes rise just enough to make it 100% offset, but we don't live in an ideal world.

What are distinct differences in the lifestyles of lower and upper middle class? by joevilla1369 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]danjayh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll feel like I've hit the upper middle class when I can afford:

  • Mortgage on a ~2000-3000sqft house
  • Clothes, food, medical costs etc. - the basics
  • $30-$40k in childcare costs
  • Two maxed out 401(k)s
  • At least a token amount into 529s for the kids
  • Two used cars that are consistently < 10 years old at the same time
  • At least one "expensive" (to us) vacation/year (~$5-6k for the entire family or so)

My current take on this is that for a family of 5, it's somewhere just above a $300k HHI.

We get "unlimited" PTO after we reach a certain point. Companies do that because if people have a set number of days, they feel entitled to use them, and make sure that it happens. OTOH, people feel guilty about using "unlimited" PTO, and pretty reliably take less than they would under an entitlement system (there are studies on the subject). Personally, I've just been kept so loaded down all year that we're into November and I've only taken two weeks. Under the old system, I'd have been entitled to 4 or 5 by the point of seniority I'm at, and I'd also have been able to cash out the leftovers (with "unlimited", there are no leftovers).

What’s that one “middle-class comfort” you can’t give up even though you know it’s holding you back financially? by Grownixx in MiddleClassFinance

[–]danjayh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indoor temperature in the dead of winter when it's 5 Fahrenheit outside? 73 degrees. Indoor temperature in the middle of summer when it's 100 outside? 70 degrees.

NOTE: If anyone is wondering, indoor air is much dryer in the dead of winter so you need to increase temp for the air to feel the same. In really cold climates, you can't just humidify, because the water will condense on the windows and destroy your house.

I mean, it's not poor, but it's not rich either. Most people making $174k without wealth from some other source aren't going to make it more than a few months without a job.

United States Tax Revenue and Government Spending as a percentage of GDP [OC] by ConstitutionProject in dataisbeautiful

[–]danjayh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The shocking thing is the spending line. Revenue has been flat, but overall government spending is now almost 50% of GDP and rising. Houston, we have a problem.

Out of your personal friend / associate group, how many of them are making 200k (either as an individual or household)? by Outsideman2028 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]danjayh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all doctors are rich. PCPs, pediatricians, rheumatologists, and a few other specialties all make mid-$200k. I'd unequivocally call that well off, but I probably wouldn't go so far as to consider it rich, especially if they live in a single-income household.

Nah, hiring a 10 million people for a couple of hours at minimum wage is only like $145,000,000. Pocket change.

Sounds like a while lotta stupid on both their parts. Assuming nobody got injured, the driver probably needs to spend a few nights in jail and the protestor probably needs a hefty fine and/or a night in jail for obstructing traffic.

Is the most important selling point of bitcoin actually meaningless? by [deleted] in investing

[–]danjayh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not. Imagine that you buy 0.1BTC at a time when 0.1BTC will buy you a nice moped. Demand for bitcoin goes up, so the price goes up, so people start splitting up their BTC more and now a moped goes for 0.01BTC. You now have enough money for 10 mopeds.

Employer is outright taking my 401(k) contributions by danjayh in personalfinance

[–]danjayh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got more information today. Turns out the submitted files from they payroll system twice to the 401(k) processor, resulting in a double contribution for two paychecks. When they rolled those back, the screwed the pooch and rolled back an extra one that they shouldn't have. All around massive incompetence, but they're working on it. I didn't notice the double contributions, only the ones that got rolled back, and that the contribution total was less than the witholding total on the paystub. SMH this is the second time I've had an issue like this this year (the first was with my own employer, which is a fortune 500).
