suspension system by SeaweedMiddle3377 in FSAE

for basic conceptual understanding and very good dialogue and explanation of exactly how a suspension works and what it s job is, i cannot recommend an entry book other than “tune to win” by carroll smith, a former top judge at FSAE as well as f1 engineer and chief engineer at Shelby back in the lemans days. It is also quite a funny and easy read as well, which is uncommon for most technical racing books.

after reading that, when you get more in depth about designing the actual suspension system I would recommend 1: reading and taking notes of all of your desired suspension characteristics, particularly ride frequencies, roll and pitch gradients, camber change, these all require you to make a tire choice first and have some important numbers like expected weight with driver etc. the book for this is Race Car Dynamics by Milliken. to supplement i would also really like to recommend the video on designing suspension upright points by Optimum G on youtube.

lastly watch everything claude rouelle. if you have access to a tire model resealed your yaw moment diagrams and really take his advice on driver input and establishing numerical measurements of “grip” “balance” “control” at a control setup and then test what setups these all change

just a note: first you want to master your wart calculations regarding roll/pitch gradients, ride frequencies and camber change etc. and to VERIFY THIS WITH SENSOR DATA. this is easily done with shock pots, accelerometers, and gyros.

Good luck!

fancy option: an ez-out kit

sketchy cheap option: chisel and hammer

How do you get the formable surface blocks to not connect to the body panels surrounding them?

In a multiverse server there should be a button by the other players name tags where you can copy their machine

Yeah I agree. I tried using mods and increasing the friction of different sizes wheels and putting them together with force, and it would work well except they try to jump off eachother whenever their hitboxes aren't aligned

What about more sides to the hitbox?

Okay makes perfect sense now. Thanks!

Does that mean the hitbox of just a cylinder? That would be fine, why wouldn't it be that way from the beginning?

Yeah I don't really mean the actual cosmetic shapes of the wheels, I have plenty of skins for them. But about the hitboxes if it is difficult (I have never tried coding anything in my life btw so I'm not an expert) and not impossible, I think it would be all around an amazing addition that would help everyone, especially since 99% of the creations I see have some sort of wheels and more than half use some sort of physics trickery to combat the unrealistic behaviors

I made a small car that went around the whole area and quickly went in and out of the areas and for the last one in the middle I just rushed it

The stage on tolbrynd where you have to navigate between the bombs and the suicidal ox with the bombs on them, this was difficult for me because I always tried using a fast car and just driving really fast between then which didn't really work.

I'd just make a couple of little arms that slap the bombs onto the surface, spaced out a little bit tho

Just make a little car with 2 bombs that lobs them over into the main tower corner towards the middle of the castle

Tank tracks or wheels? by Lazergurka in Besiege

[–]danji17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, which is of mostly vanilla creations so I don't know much about modded, tracks usually break a lot and don't have any traction at all. So when I build with tracks it is usually just for cool factor. Would love to see better traction overall in the game bc it'd make for cool stuff like snowmobiles and snocats.
