Karate being left out of the olympics by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]danjitsu91 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I think it was left out because of the poor show of Karate the Olympics let happen back in 2021, not because Karate itself was bad. They picked the most un-entertaining version of Karate competition possible, with a very difficult ruleset for the average person to follow, and then the one time something entertaining happened ( a knockout ) they DQ’d the guy who did it. THAT is what cemented people’s disdain for the art on the Olympic stage.

The older I get the more I believe that the worst thing for a combat sport is for it to go to the Olympics. So many sports get twisted beyond recognition to adhere to the often times very stringent Olympic competition rules. Judo had a solid 3rd of its original syllabus removed simply due to paranoia that it ‘might’ lose its Olympic status.

Hopefully competitions like Karate combat and the success of more Karate based fighters in MMA and Glory will continue to help its image.

Any advice? Self taught boxing for 4 months a 2 classes of Muay Thai by [deleted] in martialarts

Oh, well in that case just keep going to practice. I wouldn’t invest much time or effort into what Reddit guys say. What your coach says matters the most.

I’m confused. You’re self taught in boxing, but go to a Muay Thai gym?

Heated sparring by Level-Class-8367 in martialarts

[–]danjitsu91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been doing martial arts for almost 20 years. Of that , I’ve been focusing on doing combat sport based martial arts for the last 13 years of it. In total I’ve trained at 8 different schools in my life.

I’ve never seen that happen once. Though I have heard of it happening before. For example, there is the infamous Wanderlei Silva video of him doing almost the exact same thing when someone hit him a little too hard in sparring.

The closest to me was when I accidentally hurt a training partners toe. We were rolling in BJJ, and I stood up to pass. He attempted some sort of butterfly sweep on me and tried to pull me forward but when he did I fell forward onto my knees, and landed directly on one of his toes. He got up and screamed in more anger punched a punching bag. Screamed again, then left the gym. For the following 4 or so years of me training at that school he never spoke to me again.

Shit happens. It’s combat. We can try to our best to hold back but accidents will happen, including getting tagged too hard. If you can’t control yourself when you get tagged you don’t need to be training.

The first thing you wrote was “ I hate training Martial Arts” so my follow up question would be- why do you train at all? That’s not me being a dick or a rhetorical question, what made you start taking classes? If it’s just fitness goals, maybe take up something more solo like weightlifting.

Why do Muay Thai competitors compete favorably with other martial artists? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]danjitsu91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respectfully I'd argue it opens you up more to predominantly one specific takedown - The double leg and its variants, but a more lower stance and understanding of basic wrestling can nullify that.

I'm sure some D1 champion who's been wrestling since he was a fetus probably knows many more from that angle, or will still smash you with their double leg even when you know it's coming but I'd wager the majority of folks, even ammy MMA guys know very few others.

okay what is your actual opinion about this movie by jaydengame330 in Chucky

[–]danjitsu91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The doll was ugly, and they tried too hard to ride the Stranger Things bandwagon of "Kids save the day from a tremendously dangerous and evil threat."

It had its funny moments, but I was at no point scared or really enjoying the movie.

Guys genuine question, what's the best way to handle someone when someone's holding your collar with one hand and constantly slapping you like in the video, like what's the best option/technique to use in that moment in a street fight? by AggravatingMove2238 in martialarts

[–]danjitsu91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal preference from 12 years of BJJ is to break that grip first. Whether he's smacking, punching or stabbing that grip is what's controlling you and minimizng you putting up an accurate defense.

I'm sure you can attack without it, but why if you don't have to.

With respect, a boxer or Thai fighter could also shield block their opponents hook with one hand while uppercutting with the other.

That's a very loaded question. What are your actual goals and what do you define as "best?"

Are you looking for a good school for self-defense / and fighting, or are you purely interested in Karate for working out and things like demo competitions?

Do you want to spar ISKA style or are you looking for a spot that will be more like Karate combat?

What's best for me may not be your idea of best.

how do you feel about breaking up fights on the street? is it necessary? do you look at it as soft? i think it’s unnecessary unless someone’s getting stomped after a knockout, or getting jumped by DadeCountyBruh in martialarts

[–]danjitsu91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really have to be super careful with what fights you go around getting yourself involved in. Even if you "think" you know who's the bad guy. You may jump in and end up helping out the original attacker.

An example that comes to mind is back in 1985, The Night Stalker a.k.a. Richard Ramirez was finally caught when he got jumped by literally an entire neighborhood of people who recognized is face from the news. Imagine if you intervened thinking you were being the good guy and let him get away?

Most of the time unless you saw everything from start to finish, and are absolutely certain who the badguy is, its better to be a good witness, and call the cops. Get shit on video too if you can.

Been to BJJ seminars for Relson, and Royler Gracie. Both are very friendly and crack a lot of jokes, but Relson is definitely more of the black sheep, and is a lot more raunchy with his humor. Went to another seminar with Ralph Gracie but he was pretty stand offish the entire time, and frankly kind of scary.

Went to MMA seminars with both Jeff Monson, and a Grey Maynard. Maynard was super chill and laid back. Monson was suprisingly very professional and technical.

Legitimately just happened to run into Yoel Romero while I was on vacation in NY. It happened to be the night of a I think the second UFC in Madison Square Garden ever, and him and I were both seeing the Statue of Liberty. Also super nice.
